Stephen & Mary Ann Ivy - possilbe missing son?

To all Stephen Ivy researchers - I have a "speculation" regarding a missing child of Stephen & Mary Ann Ivy. Family tradition has it that there were 13 children, but only 11 have been accounted for.

A possible candidate for another sibling: Moses J Ivy.

1) In 1850 Moses age 22, worked for Joab Beeson in Jasper Co MS. Therefore he would not be listed in the home of Stephen Ivy in Choctaw Co AL..

2) In 1850 Moses future wife Eliza Savell's family lived only a couple of HH away from Stephen Ivy (Moses' father)in Choctaw Co AL.

3) In 1860 Lauderdale Co MS, Moses & family live next door to Jacob Rowell family who has a dau Sara age 23. Moses' bro Joshua Hall Ivy will marry Sara Rowell in 1861 who died shortly after. Sara is buried at Beulah Baptist Newton, Mississippi, USA
. . . The first complete listing of early church members found in the church minute book in 1867 as follows: James Rowell 11; William Rowell 13; Jane Rowell 21; F. Rowell 22; SARA IVY (dead) 23; J. Rowell 33; E. Rowell 29 . . .

4) Moses was in 36th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, the same regiment as bro, Hugh W Ivy.

5) Moses and his family lived their life in Tunnel Hill, Lauderdale Co MS. Bro Joshua Hall Ivy also lived in Tunnel Hill area in 1910.
--------------------------------------------------
1850 Jasper Co MS
Moses Ivy 22 bAL - Laborer in the Joab Beeson home

1850 Census; Bladon Springs, Choctaw County, Alabama
Ivey, Stephen 64 M Planter b VA
Mary A 55 F b GA
J.
Greer Memorial Field was named for Merrill Earl Greer who was principal of the Meridian High School when the 'athletic' field was built in the 'block' across from the (at that time) high school building.

ME Greer went (early 1920s) to Meridian at the invitation of HM Ivy whose brother, AC Ivy (Univ. Chicago), recommended Greer (who had just received an MA degree in Administrative Education.

In 1929 Greer developed appendicitis at a time when his regular doctor (whose patients were always sent to a very good hospital called "Rush's Infirmary") was 'out of town'. The 'substitute doctor' sent Greer to different hospital in Meridian {one that was busy developing a reputation for DIRTY SURGERY'}.

Greer died of postoperative peritonitis at the age of 39 years.

=== Information supplied by the daughter (age 83 yrs) of Merrill Earl Greer ===

I am looking for any information on Brittain King born 1795 married to Elizabeth (not sure of maiden name) who is the same age. They have two girls on the census in 1850 Lauderdale county, Rosannah, 18 and Elizabeth J., 14. He was a land owner in the Lauderdale area as of 1832. I wasn't able to find out how is land was disposed of, if it was sold or if was deeded to a relative. He appears to have been in AL prior to that. I didn't find that name anyplace else in the records I searched in that county. My King family is John King (b.1815) and Margaret Parker (b.1818 or 1820) of Ocean Springs MS and I'm trying to see if they have any connection. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Marriage Record Book 49 Page 482. Looked from 1939 until about 1950 and saw no other marriage for M. R. Brett. The adoption records are sealed. I know Mississippi changed the law a few years ago and you can personally seek the records.

Frank Buckley

He was the first elected Probate Judge of Choctaw County, Alabama, 1850. The county was formed in December, 1847. He also served as the first mayor of Meridian, Mississippi, 1872-1874. He lost a son, Robert Henry Wilcox, age nineteen years, in the service of the Confederate States Army. His second wife was Sarah Battilee Dade Winston of Culpepper County, Virginia.

Carrie Winston Bush McCall wrote the following:

My maternal grandfather, Judge C. N. Wilcox, would have enlisted (in the Confederate Army) but the examining board decided he could not stand active service. He, however, did hold civil office under the Confederate Government, and belonged to the Home Guards. He gave liberally toward supporting the Confederate Army and sent two negroes to work on the breastworks in Mobile. At the close of the war, he was offered the position of "Inspector of the Port of Mobile, under the Federal Government. As this necessitated taking the "iron-clad oath," he indignantly refused. His wife, Sallie Battle Dade Winston of Virginia, was President of the Soldier's Aid Society. The object of the society was to get up boxes of clothing for all the soldiers from that part of the county. Among the negroes owned by my grandfather, there were a number of good spinners and weavers. These were kept busy spinning and weaving for the soldiers. My great uncle, Walter Winston, was a member of Co. K, 14th Mississippi Volunteers, and his brother, Isaac, went from Livingston, Ala.

Hurricane Creek seems to be the area's name in the census of the 1800s. My family lived there. Toomsuba is the name of the area now. Also, Kewanee is very close by, as well. My family's name is Ramsey--my great grandparents are Jacob and Leanna Ramsey, an African-American family but I understand Leanna had a very fair-complexion. Jacob and Leanna bought and sold acres of land although they could not read or write. Who helped them? I see a James B Ramsey in the county. Was he a slaveholder? Could he be Jacob's father. Any information on the Ramseys in Mississippi is appreciated.

Hi Ellizabeth, this is great, someone put M. Agnew as M. Barland, Margaret Barland had to have died before 1816 because Tyree is born in 1817. Also I don't think M. Barland died in MS because the 1830 census has the Hendersons in Washington, AL and that is where George Agnew died. So I believe she died in TN, Geo says he went from SC to KY, to TN and ended at AL, and I am sure Margaret went with him all these places.
ann

Margaret Barland and the dates I have for Margaret Agnew are this wife's dates.

Who ever worked this tree up has one child born 1808 and then the next 1815 and so on. They only have Barland listed as a wife. So now to sort this out. They have Maraget Barland listed death location as Lauderdale Co MS 1854. This could be M. Agnew's date.
Elizabeth

I have William Henderson b. 1773 m. Margaret Agnew b. 1787 on March 24, 1808 in Adams, MS. The first child was born 1805 and the next 1807. Then there is another born 1815 and so on.

I do not have but one marriage for each of them. So what is missing is Margaret Agnew's marriage to D. Hall and that information. And, who was the first wife of William and what were the dates?

I have no clue where this information came from or the dates which are pretty detailed. I need to do some work on this project. Elizabeth

Hello Elizabeth, Darlington Hall and Margaret Agnew were m. 29 Apr 1809 in Maury, TN "TN-35,000 TN Marriage Records and Bonds, by Rev. Silas Lucas, p. 70" Darlington went off to the Mexican War and died in TX @ 1813. Margaret had 2 children w/Darlington, Cynthia Hall m. to Peyton Coker and Wm Gladden Hall m. to Mary Odum. Cynthia is b. in Coker Chapel. I have Margaret m. Wm Henderson in 1816, but I don't know where I got that info. I believe Wm Henderson was married before Margaret because of his children b. before he m. Margaret. If you look between James and Tyree there is a gap of 3 yrs. I believe there are only 5 children w/Margaret (Tyree, Ephraim, Ira, Charles and Narcissa) and 5/with his first wife (Gideon, John, Wilson, Wm Jr., James). Margaret and Darlington were b. in SC. Darlington's father was John Hall and Martha Gladden, both born and died in Winnsforo, Fairfield, SC. The grandfather, Thomas Hall and Isabella Hollis were both b. in Prince Wm, VA. Their father, John Hall was b. in Castledown, Killucken Prish, West Meath, Ireland.

I was just reviewing our previous emails from last summer, and I can't help but think that your Martin Van Buren Miller and my Martin are the same people. I know that my Charles G Miller was a physician also. Lauderdale County, MS and Choctaw County, AL are neighboring counties. My Martin was born abt 1837 yours 1840 - still could be same person because a lot the ages are estimated on those censuses. There was also a Martin Van Buren in the next generation who was a district attorney in Meridian. My Millers orginally came from Scotland, but the oral family history says they left from Ulster, Ireland. There are just too many similarties.

Sandra
