Still fund raising. I can connect to most of them one way or another. I know that Samuel Scott had a few plantation and alot of slaves. I don't know anything about the slaves but would love to hear more. I will be glad to share with you what I have found so far.
India J. Wolf
IWolf54197@aol.com

Ms Wolf, Not sure if you meant that response for me or not but thought I would respond just in case. I have extensive info on the Scott Family Slaves and some information on the Scotts. Most of my work in Jefferson County has been on AA families living in the Poplar Hill area. I am now concertrating on the Auburn Hall Plantation owned by Col. Hunt. Looking for Elvira, Merriman, & Arthur Ellis family who were born at Auburn. Was just in the area so probably need to make another visit to the court house in the near future. Thank you
Toni Stewart

They are listed in each of the 1870 thru 1910 census'. Martin W. was born Aug 1829 in Georgia. His wife was Angeline born about 1834 in Georgia. They had the following children: Meeks, Julia, John, Isaac, James, Eugene, Mary "Polly", Caroline, Asberry, Jennie, Lena and Isom. Anything would be greatly appreciated.
Hi - Is there any chance you could send a scan of the lease to me - at tmoffatt@xplornet.com (careful on the spelling of xplornet - it is missing two 'e's compared with the way you would think it was spelled).

What was the year of the lease?

Thanks - Tom Moffatt
I, too, am interested in Dr James Moffett and his wife Laura R Scott. I have a copy of a lease for property in Jefferson County made between James & Laura Moffett and my gg grandfather Levy Elzy. I am trying to figure out the relationship between my gg grandfather Levy and her father, Thomas and her uncle, Osborn. I would like to know if she inherited or was gifted property from her father or uncle.

I am looking for information about Michael Laughman who arrived in Mississippi between 1798 and 1800. His wife was name Sarah though we don't know her maiden name or where they were married. He lived in Jefferson County. His son, Asa A.B. was born in Jefferson County in 1805; he married Frances Thomas in 1828. On one census record, Frances Thomas Laughman states that she came from North Carolina. Asa and Frances lived in Jefferson and Claiborne counties. They may also have lived in Jackson County. We would also appreciate any information about Frances Thomas' lineage.

I am trying to find any records - and especially land/property records - for a Dr. James Moffett who seems to first show up in the 1866 State Census for Jefferson Co., then marries Laura R. Scott (born ca. 1837 in 1867. She was the daughter of Thomas Scott and Matilda Terry. JAMES MOFFETT AND LAURA have Thomas Scott Moffett and Rosa Moffett by 1870 Census. Rosa marries first Elmer G. Martin, and then Philip D. Stampley. Does anyone have information on this family? I am especially trying to unravel the story of how Dr. James Moffett left Ireland (born Swords, Dublin Co., IRE 1822) and arrived in Jefferson Co. MS. His name, and those of his chilren and their spouses also appear as part of a pedigree that was part of a land issue in Ireland - document now in National Archives, Dublin

Thanks for your post! I'll be glad to provide a little more information.

This project is a family finder project. While some participants have also taken the ydna or mtdna tests, the focus will be on the family finder test. Since this project is a FTDNA project, membership is also limited to those who have tested at FTDNA. I'm planning to test at both places (tested first at FTDNA and hope to follow up with a test at Ancestry), so I know both places are excellent companies to do business with and I have no bias either way. Just hoping to create a place for those of us with roots from the area to discuss our family finder results.

Emy

My family resided in Adams and Jefferson counties from ca. 1802 to ca. mid-1813, at which time they pulled up stakes and moved - via Missouri, we think, to SW Arkansas. I have Y-DNA results, from Sorenson/GeneTree, that I can provide - or you can look at the Melson group here at Ancestry-DNA. Dunno if I quite meet the criteria - I certainly don't if testing by FTDNA is a requirement.

You can contact me directly at amia9018@mypacks.net.

The early Mississippi marriages did not ask for parents' names. I don't know about under-age brides & grooms.

There were newspapers for this time period. Check the Mississippi Department of Archives and History site for the newspapers they have. http://opac2.mdah.state.ms.us/msnews1.php?referer=http://zed...
Marriage announcements were usually brief. Sometimes, but not always, they gave a parent's name.

Annette

Thanks for the suggestion. I thought to ask other gene-ies first before calling a clerk busy with today work. Which in this case for marriages would be the Circuit Clerk.

Yes, Indexes just extract the main info, they are not abstractions where all the pertinent data is pulled from a record.

And, forms and what they ask for change over time and by location. That's why I was hoping someone reading the board who was familiar with this early time period in Jefferson Co would advise on the information asked on the form.

If the county records in that time frame record more info than just bride/groom than I'll order the LDS microfilm of the same book from which the circuit clerk would copy the one record that way I can check out the records of suspected relatives also.

My person essentially lived in Jefferson a short time, less than 10 years. Her parents died in LA and I believe she came to live with relatives in MS. Then married and left. Leaving very little clues -- like bread crumbs.

... and as Hansel and Gretel know pebbles work better than bread crumbs to find your way home.

Again, thanks for responding.

Lisa
My recommendation is you phone the Jefferson County Clerk's office. They can tell you about their marriage records.

My experience is that one record has only what you saw on the index, the couple's names and date marriage.
Only when I actually wrote them a letter and included what their fee was for a xerox copy of the actual document will you see what it conains. In many cases, a bond was paid and someone else signed with the groom.

My grandparents came from Jefferson County, MS. I have family in the surrounding counties, Copiah, Claiborne, Lincoln, and Madison to name a few. Each were different.
None said who their parents were. Not one!!

The Jefferson County Court House
Clerk of Chancery Court
307 Main Street
Fayette, MS. 39609
phone is 601-786-3422

Good luck!!
Leslie Pierce Royce

Any experienced researchers with early Jefferson Co marriages:

What information is generally contained in these early marriages (the actual marriage record)? Is is just the names of the Groom, Bride and Minister OR does it contain names of witnesses, names of parents, or consent of parent/guardian for those of a younger age also?

I found an index entry for Valentine I/J Hopkins and Elizabeth Rider marrying on 6 Nov 1834. And I am wondering if it is worth ordering the LDS microfilm of the marriage book to see the actual record? By worth, I mean will it give me the names of Elizabeth's parents or the name of her guardian as her parents were deceased.

Also is there any existing newspapers for 1834?

Thanks for any advice.
Lisa

Not a Garrison person or cemetery in either book, but there's an Elizabeth Schofield Winters (b. Honley, near Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England; wife of H. L. Winters), b. 1/19/1832; d. 11/4/1880; buried in Rodney Cemetery.
Nancy

Hi,
I checked both Volume 1 and 2 of Ann Brown's "Jefferson County Cemeteries," but I'm sorry to say that no Chofiel Cemetery is listed (and no one by that name is listed) in either of the books.
Nancy Brister
