According to the Jasper County, Mississippi cemetery book,
A.P. Rogers and his wife, Ibell Rogers are buried in the Liberty Congregational Methodist Church Cemetery however they have no marked headstones. Their names and that they were husband and wife is listed in the unmarked or unfound graves section but are known to be buried there from Laurel-Leader Call obits and other sources. No dates were given for either of them.

In searching early Jasper County, Mississippi land patent records, I did not find the names of Tomison or Tannison.

I did find where in 1841 a Greenberry Parker patented land in Section 14, Township 3 North, Range 13 East. This is located on State Highway 18 about 4 miles southeast of the community of Rose Hill, Mississippi and about a mile from the Clarke County, Mississippi line.

The nearest cemetery in Jasper County is the Rose Hill Cemetery. There were no Parkers buried there and the earliest death date was in the early 1900's.

About a mile south of Rose Hill is the Hickory Grove Cemetery. I did find a Sarah Parker Hicks buried there. No birth date was given but the death date wa listed as Ca. 1866/1868 and that she was the first wife of Peter T. Hicks, born in 1834 and died on March 23, 1898.

There are cemeteries close by in Clarke County, Mississippi so you might try there also.

Re: Halford Family - Jasper Co. 1850+

First, do you descend from Dunkin Bohannon?

Now about your message. There is just too many things in this message board post that is strangely familiar to my own Halford (Alford) research. I have been researching my 4th great grandparents John C Halford b. 1787 NC s/o John and wife Catharine Brown m. 1820 Warren MS b. 1795 SC d. 1854 Sarepta MS d/o James Brown b. 1770 SC d. 1820 Warren MS and Elizabeth. John Halford was a JP in the 1820s in Simpson county MS after a short while in Barnwell SC working in the courts.

I descend from their daughter Jincy Halford and George Washington who lived in Russell Co. AL 1840 next door to John C Halford, then Jincy died in childbirth with 3rd child Catharine before Jan 1845 as that was the date of her husbands 2nd marriage in Muscogee GA to Mary Ann McEwen b. 1825 GA d/o Kirkham McEwen (also a JP).

In early 1841 (and probably before Jincy Halford's death) John C Halford and son-in-law George Washington took a land purchase trip to MS where both purchased land in adjoining counties - Kemper and Jasper cos. MS. So I don't know where Jincy would be buried - MS or AL.

George Washington is next found in Wetumpka, Coosa, AL 1850 with new wife Mary and sons Francis Marion and John C of the first marriage, and new baby James Hirum of the second marriage. Not far away was John C Halford JP living next door to Kirkham McEwen JP.

George Washington then goes to Chickasaw county about 1856 as he was found on Choctaw Living In The Chickasaw District annuity rolls 1856-1860. I then find John C Halford living in Sarepta, Calhoun, Mississippi in 1860 census and slave schedules also in household was grandson John C Washington b. 30 Dec 1840 and his new bride Margaret Lewellen. John Halford's wife had died about 4-5 years earlier and is buried in Methodist Campground [Ragland] Cemetery also in Sarepta. John Halford then drops seemingly from existence.

I am also searching in Pontotoc, Calhoun, Warren, Simpson, Kemper and Jasper cos. Mississippi for anything on Jincy Halford and her parents and husband George Washington b. 1821 d. 1869 buried Sarepta, Calhoun, MS. I know that the war hit these folks very hard and they lost most everything, and there's one story of cousins who died from starvation while hiding in a cave during the siege of Vicksburg.

I've come across Pickett McIntosh and Ira French in the past and will pay attention if I see then again.

Terrie W

For the 1850 census, Jasper county was divided into 3 townships: Garlandsville, Not Stated and Paulding.

Of course, my family is listed in the Not Stated township. Does anyone know where this section is located and what cemeteries might be close?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am researching the Green Berry Parker and the James Tomison familes. The Tomison family is incorrect transcribed as Tannison.

Thanks, Jen

There is an Ulmer Cemetery about 2 miles west of the Church and Cemetery. But, unfortunately, when Highway 528 was straightened and hard surfaced a lot of debris was deposited over the cemetery.

Contact me. Julia Ann (Risher) McDonald Collins just happened to have been my great grandmother. Julia Ann and Gabriel S. Collins married after their spouses died. The marriage event happened after 1850 because both households (Julia and John and Gabriel and Sarah) were intact at the time of the 1850 Census. C.C.(uncle "Cald") McDonald was not in the 1850 Census but was in the 1860 Census. The 1860 Census showed the Gabriel-Julia Ann Collins household with 6 McDonald children and 2 Collins children. The Collins children were Sarah Susannah, age 18 from Gabriel's 1st marriage and Gabriel George, age 9 months from marriage to Julia Ann. Gabe and Julia had one more child (Asa) after 1860. I will be happy give you names of the McDonald children and their ages and other information in another message, as I think I might be running out of space.

Ross

Thanks for your reply. Do you think the two fires would have been within days of each other? I just find it suspicious that the story was that the marriage records were lost in the fire but the marriage date on the re-issued "certificate" was several days after the fire. Some family members who knew Jake Taylor always thought he duped Rossi into believing they were married when the really were not. It would be interesting to prove it one way or the other but I don't guess we really can.

Good morning,do you know if you kin to the Ishee family or have family that were close friends. Are you male or female?? I knew a lady named Louin also. Anyway...the town of Louin is named after a man named Louin Ishee. This is a story told to me by my grandparents.....Mr.Louin Ishee was in the Bay Springs train station with a very limted amount money....asked the ticket master how far he could travel on what he had.....he was told to a small settlement just north of here....well,that's where he got off and stayed. This came from Zack Ishee who my grandparents knew. Hope this is hopeful in your quest.

Louin, do you know if your MABRY side of the family is from MS and/or any info beyond? Reason I ask is, my Great Great Great Grandmother was a MABRY. Minerva MABRY b. abt. 1810 in either NC or GA. She married John B. WATSON [my GGG Grandfather]on 12 AUG 1829 in Greene County, GA. Between 1845 and 1849 they moved to Lauderdale County, MS. There are some other MABRY's in MS at that time, but, I have been unable connect her to them, or the MABRY's that are in the Greene/Oglethorpe County areas in GA either. Also have not been able to connect John B. WATSON to any of the WATSON's in those areas either. I've been researching this since 2000!

From the book, Hometown Mississippi, written by James Brieger:
"Located seven miles north of Bay Springs, Louin started as an intersection of two county roads where the Ishee, Bassett, Land, Simmons, Wilkins, Greyson, and Hickman families had settled.
A trading center developed around this settlement, and in 1890, a post office was opened and named Louin for Louin Ishee. The name was submitted by his father, Zack Ishee.
The Mount Vernon Baptist Church was built on this site in 1848, the town was incorporated in 1904, and in 1906, the railroad was built through the town."
I don't know if there is a connection of his first name with your first name. Good luck! This is all I have.

A now deceased relative who lived in Birmingham, Alabama always claimed she was married in Jasper Co, Paulding, Miss at the court house on September 18, 1932 (license applied for on the 17th). She said the court house burned so there was no record of her marriage but she later obtained a documentation stating that she married there on that day. It is signed by William M._____, whose last name is unreadable - looks something like Jennies. I notice that the court house did indeed burn but it was on the 19th of September, a week before the marriage took place. My question is, if she did marry on September 18, wouldn't it have been recorded somewhere else and if so, where? Seems likely to me that they would have been referred to a nearby county. Their names were Rossie Rogers and John Kepler Taylor. Appreciate any help!

I have not heard of a Strickland Plantation near Rose Hill in Jasper County, Mississippi, however I do find a Simeon Strickland who patented land very near the town of Rose Hill in 1846 and a Simeon Stricklin in the same area. Also a John Strickland and John Stricklin patented land in the same area in 1841. The total acreage patented by the Stricklands/stricklins is 640 acres and all within 2 miles of Rose Hill, Mississippi.

My 94 year old grandmother did research for many years in the 50s on the STRICKLANDs and COLLINS families. She has asked me to inquire about a lead she never fully followed regarding a Strickland Plantation in Rose Hill. It is very important to her to find out about it, but impossible for her to travel there, so any information would be greatly appreciated. For instance, did the a Strickland Plantation exist? Who did it belong to? What does any one know of that family and their relations? My grandmother is Inez Strickland Palmer, sister of Ben Strickland, sister-in-law of Jean Strickland.

My grandfather was Warren Patrick. (The 1880 census record erroneously shows Warren T.) In the 1950s and 60s my family travelled every July from Japser County to Greene County to attend my mother's family reunion. Most years we would stop just south of Richton (in Perry County) to have a short visit with my dad's "Cousin Delia Hinton". All I ever knew was that she was a distant cousin. From reading your entry, she was obviously the daughter of Cordelia. I don't remember her married name. I suspect she has passed. But, she did have children.
