Fleming C. Bates who lived in Jasper Co., MS and is listed on the 1860 MS Jasper Census was my gr gr gr grandfather. He was married to Melinda "Linnie" Broom. I think they must have been married in GA or AL. In the 1840 AL Sumter census, F. C. Bates is listed as follows: 1 male (30-40) 1 female (under 5) and 1 female (15-20). This would be perfect for my Fleming Bates. In 1840 he would have been 32 years old, Melinda would have been abt 19 and they would have had one small daughter, Martha aged abt 2 years old. I know the family moved to MS and appear on the 1860 Jasper County, MS census with 11 children. Martha Bates had already married to Redick Smith who was the brother of Andrew Jackson Smith and the son of Redick Smith and Mary Clarke. Sarah Bates married Zedikiah Carr Rayner on 2 Jan 1862 in Jasper County, MS. What I am trying to find out is what happened to Fleming C. Bates and his family as I cannot find it anywhere after the 1860 Census. Does anyone out there know what happened to this family? Does anyone know if this Fleming C. Bates is the son of Benjamin Bates and Tace Crew? Thank you so much, Susan
