Obituary Notice Needed For George Cooks (died 10-28-1997 in Silver City, Mississippi)

2-13-2013

Can anyone please help me find an obituary notice for a Mr. George Cooks who died October 28, 1997 in Silver City, Mississippi? Would like to receive a printed copy if possible, but if not, you can send me the text of it in an e-mail message to keith345@hotmail.com. If an obit is not available, if there is a city directory at a local library that can tell me what his address was for any year, that would also be helpful. I'm trying to find any of his family members. Thanks for any assistance! keith345@hotmail.com (Genealogical Researcher)

Carolyn, it would help considerably to have a date to work from. That being said, consider the following:

Dora JONES b. Jun 1879 (she claimed to be older), dau. of Nancy JONES;
* enum. 1880 age 6/12 in household of Fannie FRASIER, who may be her grandmother, in Woolfolk & Gibbs Precinct, Beat 5, northern Yazoo Co. MS;
* m.abt. 1892 in MS to Robert MILLER Jr. (b. Dec 1872);
* enum. 1900 age 25 in Crump's Precinct, near present-day Carter, in northern Yazoo;
* enum. 1910 age 34 again in Crump's Precinct;
* enum. 1920 age 38 in Lake City Precinct, Beat 3, northern Yazoo;
* enum. 1930 age 44 again in Lake City.

1940 data not yet available. Robert and Dora had three children: Carrie (m. PERRY), b. Oct 1892; Wallace b. Aug 1894; Anna b. I'm also looking for more information on the son Jesse and his wife Mattie Maybelle Herring Marshall. It seems they owned a plantation and then lost it for some reason and I'm really hoping to flesh out that story.

Thanks for your help.
I found Julie & Walter Upchurch with 4 children living in Sunflower County, MS, on the 1900 MS Sunflower Beat 1 Census Record. Next to the Upchurch family in the 1900 census is a Marshall family. Is this the family you are looking for? L Marshall was born in 1845 and Mary Marshall was born in 1848

Julie A Upchurch has a tombstone in the Four Mile Cemetery stating she died in 1903 (3 years after the 1900 census). She was about 32. Julie was born in June 1870.

Hope this helps.

Betsy

Seeking information on the Marshall Family in the area. My maternal grandfather was Jessie Walter Marshall, one of few of the family who survived the flu epidemic of 1918. I understand the family was very prosperous and prior to the northern invasion owned a plantation and an unknow number of slave families. My grandmother told me many of their decendants were share cropping on the land when she married my grandfather. Unfortunately, my grandfather lost the plantation soon after marrying my grandmother, Maybelle Herring. I would like to know exactly how it passed from family hands. Information is very limited and only passed down verbally. I know my great grandfather John Herring served in the 1st Mississippi Light Artillery and that several Marshalls are on muster rolls of the unit. I would like very much to know if I am related to those Marshalls. I would appreciate any information about the family and the plantation. Family lore places it on the shores of Four Mile Lake.

I have been trying to locate information on Belzoni for years. I will probably have to just go there to try and find what I need. Quite frankly, the people in that community are about 50 years behind the times and are some of the most uncivil and arrogant people I have ever encountered. They will not even provide the courtesy of a response most of the time. One of my relatives was murdered in Belzoni in 1954 along with a friend and my family was pretty much embedded in the history. I have decided to contact Americas Most Wanted and see if they can put a fire under them.

Yes, I read the same thing. Last fall, we could not locate any gravestones along the river side of the road. Only three headstones were standing and several were laying on the ground. JW and Ella Meek are our relatives buried there. Their marker is still there.

While the cemetery is in terrible shape. A nearby landowner does keep the jungle out of the cemetery and grass mostly cut. It is possible to locate the cemetery and walk around in it.

It is a shame this cemetery is so abandoned. Perhaps the Baptist Association for Humphreys County could assume responsibility. It seems the cemetery is still listed on the tax rolls as a church. As church property, the cemetery is not taxed. The cemetery is located in Humphrey County, but was originally in Washington County before Humphreys County was formed in 1918.

I contacted the Baptist Historical Assn in Clinton. They did some research and found that a Four Mile Church was built on the property and on church rolls until the late 1940s.

Betsy

This is an email from one of my distance cusins, I think you guys might be related.

I stem from Winder Weathers, Virginia Weathers Jones, Allen Jones, Gus August Jones, Henrietta Jones Eubanks, William Eubanks, Joyce Eubanks Scott (my Mom). The name sin bold are the actual names highlighted in the family lineage pages.
What is your connection to the Vaughan family? I have several through Thomas Vaughan, Jr. and Susie Jenkins Vaughan, George Vaughan and Kesiah Jenkins Vaughan, Dallas and Ellen (Williams) Vaughan, Nelson Thomas and Missouri Vaughan Thomas, and Henry Vaughan and Nannie (Miles) Chinn Vaughan. I forget just how Uncle Reuben Vaughan (married to Winnie) fit into these branches, but I knew of them through family history and reunions.
Many of the Vaughans, Stuckeys, McGinnis, and Gray families are intertwined just as the Smith, Woolfolk, and Sallywhite (White) families. Sometimes it is all confusing, but I wanted to send the Weathers lineage showing the first three generations.
Take care and God Bless!!!
Dante M. Eubanks
Thanks for replying. I checked with the Baptist History Assn. in Clinton, MS. They confirmed that there one was a Baptist church called Four Mile Church at that location. They have records of minutes referring to the Four Mile Baptist Church up until 1946. They suggested we contact the local Baptist association to see if they have any records. I have not done that. If you are in the area, you could try that.

The township officials who sold the land to the Baptist church (according to deeds in the court house) were OM Cresswell (his wife was Mary Meek a brother to the Meek buried there), JA HEndricks, and JM Huffstickler. All owned land in the area too.

I assume that since the land has not been sold, the Baptist Association still owns the land. Obviously, the church is long gone. Perhaps a tornado or a fire destroyed it and it was never rebuilt. A Mr. Simmons owns the dog run house behind the cemetery. His family has been in the same area for generations and knows quite a bit about the history of the Four Mile Area.

Possibly tracing down what the state did at the cemetery (moved graves, plowed through graves etc) when they put the road through the middle of the cemetery in the 1930s might help. Tom Turner is a good friend of my husbands (he grew up in Belzoni) has been helping us with this search for answers to the Four Mile Cemetery puzzle. Tom did not even know the cemetery was there. We had to help him locate it. My husband's great uncle is the Meek buried in Four Mile Cemetery. He was born at Swiftown.

We have visited the cemetery three times and have photos also. Are you the one leaving the flowers? What a nice touch.

Someone in the area should know about the cemetery. It is just a matter of finding that person. Perhaps someone at the Baptist Association knows. I'll bet the Baptist Association does not know about the condition of the cemetery. They do keep their cemeteries in good shape. If you know Tom Turner, he would not mind your contacting him about the cemetery.

If you find out anything, would you please post it? This is such a curious dilemma.
She was born in 1876 and died in 1903, having had 4 children- Ozzie Clinton, mary Edna, Walter Levi (my grandfather) and Vonnia Alma. Jullie Ann is buried in 4-mile Cemetery at the junction of 4-Mile Rd and Inverness Rd. I have visited this place and have photos. I hope someone can lead me to who her parents were and if she had siblings. Right now, I know nothing of her side of the family. Many thanks in advance.

I have visited this cemetery- my great grandmother Jullie Ann MARSHALL Upchurch is buried there- I have pictures. I spoke with the county office and was referred to the Tax Collector's office to obtain information on who to contact to offer my assistance in cleaning it up. You are correct in that it is listed as church property. I have yet to speak with anyone who can give me further information. The road runs through it and some graves are on the "water" side of the road. When the water gets too high those graves are under water. I have not been able to find out if they moved any graves either. I plan to go back there and will be happy to look for the names mentioned in your inquiry and take photos if you need them. If you find out more, please let me know, too. There is also a Sky Bend Cemetery very close to 4-Mile that I have found Upchurch relatives buried in. There are some older graves there, too.

If anyone has heard of or has any information about Four Mile Cemetery southeast of Inverness, MS, and northwest of Belzoni off Highway 7, I would appreciate it. Currently, Four Mile Cemetery is located in Humphreys County at the intersection of Four Mile Road and Inverness Road along Four Mile Lake, but used to be in Washington County before Humphreys County was formed in 1918.

I have done some deed work to find out that one acre of land was sold by township officials in 1896 to the Four Mile Baptist Church. It is on the tax rolls as a "church" and is not taxed. But, there is no church, only an abandoned cemetery in front of an abandoned dog trot home. The land the home is on is owned by the Simmons Family.

We also came across deed work stating that the state took land through the middle of the cemetery sometime in the 1930s to build the current Four Mile Road. Did they plow through the graves or were of the graves moved.

Some of the names of persons buried there on the few visible markers are:

SHIPP (related to Hufstetler and Meek)
MEEK (related to Shipp and Hufstetler)
HUFSTETLER (also the name of one of the men on the township board who sold the land to the church)
UPCHURCH
WILLEY

I am interested in

* who is / was buried there ( I have searched the cemetery listings and see the few listed - above.),
* when was the road was placed through the cemetery (1930's?),
* were any graves moved,
* was there a Four Mile Baptist Church there,
* any history of the cemetery or church
* any people involved with the church from the early part of the century
* any reason no one currently takes care of that cemetery, etc.

I am actually trying to locate the graves of Junius Berryman Baker and Eliza Elmira Robinson Baker who lived at Bellewood Plantation in 1920 and were buried in the area. Perhaps they are buried in Four Mile Cemetery since it is close to where Bellewood Plantation used to be.

Perhaps someone knows something - no matter how small. Any help or assistance would be appreciated.

Irene

I'm afraid I don't have much to share with you. My primary interest is in the Maudlin family, and because Charlotte Edna Pfundt (born 15 Feb 1897 in Bay City, Bay Co, MI; died 01 Jun 1992 in Clawson, Oakland Co, MI) married on 14 Nov 1919 in Detroit, Wayne Co, MI to Grant Daniel Maudlin, I also included Charlotte's parents, Michael Pfundt (born 24 Aug 1865 in Michigan) and Margaret Schmidt (born 14 May 1868 in Bremen, Germany), as well as Charlotte's brother, Henry Pfundt. What I've listed here is the extent of my knowledge of the Pfundt family - I have no other birth/death/marriage details. Sorry I can't be of more help. - Katherine

I am desperately searching information on my Blaylock family. I'm hoping someone out there may have someone old enough in their family that may know something about them. My grandfather was Lester Blaylock and quite a character from what I hear. He was born in 1906 and died in 1971 and is buried at Gooden Lake Cemetery, his father's name was Eugene Augustus and died in Humphreys County. I think he may be buried in Silver City...If anyone knows anything...PLEASE email me at nancykirkendall@hotmail.com

I will be of little or no help on this gentleman but know he was my grandfather and the father to John Baker that was raised in that area and moved and lived in Leland, MS until his death in 1947. His sister was married to Ben Brock and I recall they had two children and also lived in Leland.

I am so excited to hear from you. My husband, Ben, is Dorothy Lucille Baker's son. Currently, we are in Tuscaloosa researching the Meeks (Amos B Baker's mother was a Meek) and will be in Mississippi next week.

As you probably have found, Humphreys County does not have a great deal of information available!

I am searching for the descendants and ancestors of Junius Berryman Baker. Information on Bellewood Plantation is very difficult to locate. There is a Bellewood road with three cemeteries and a church. I will visit there soon even though the plantation is long gone.

Junius B Baker managed Bellewood Plantation according to census records in 1900 and 1910. We have been unable to locate the graves of Junius or Eliza. Did you know Eliza was married to Elmore prior to Junius and had 3 other children? And, Junius and Eliza had five children? Both died in 1920 according to records at the Mississippi State Archives.

Still looking for other relatives of both. Are you related to them?

Would love to correspond with you.
