I found this picture of the Bethesda School in my files. It was copied from the Lexington Advertiser weekly newspaper. It is pretty dim but it is the best that I can do.

I went to Bethesda School in about 1943-1944. It was located northwest of Durant. The school building is gone now, but the teachers home was still there. the last time I was there. The teachers home hasn't been used for a number of years and is probably in very bad shape.

The school taught grades 1 through 8. It had three rooms, one had 1 through 3, one had 4 through 5 and one had 6 through 8. These are from memory and might be a little off. One teacher in each of the rooms.

The school was isolated so the county had to provide a house for the female teachers.

Does anyone have any information on Bethesda School? I believe it was in Durant, but I'm not 100% sure. My great grandfather and his brothers went to school there, but I can't find any information on the school!

In case you do not have the info you seek: Her father was indeed James Burns and his father was Reason Cornelius Burns/Byrne, born Dublin abt 1770. She had three brothers in Franklin Parish: James P. Byrne, Reason Burns and Alexander R. Burns.

The manuscripts cover several families, those of former slaves of Lucas and Catherine Vanarsdale of Leake Co. MS, etc. and then his brother William and his slaves in Louisiana. I traced all the families as far forward as I could possibly go and then their descendants as much as possible.

1850 should be easy. The Census included a separate Slave Schedule which listed the plantation owner and then the slaves individually by name.
If you don't have Ancestry.com, the free site www.familysearch.org has the images. Search by the owner's name and location (including the county helps limit the wrong people) and the year 1850.

Joel G McCone was the son of Thomas and Margaret
(In one census as Jane) McCone. I'm guessing she was Margaret Jane; her maiden name was Gulledge.
One census gives her birth in Georgia; his in Richmond County, NC. Joel was born in MS.
When I was young, my family used to visit great Aunt Nannie Belle. I remember her well and have a picture or two.
Joel and Lucy Ann were my great- grandparents; Robert and Della McCone my grandparents.

Catherine was the mother of George Henry Moore the planation owner. George and 2 of his brothers relocated to Durant in 1830s after relocating from Amelia County, VA.

In 2011 I published my family history, "A Family Built on Banks and Walls - A History of the Ancestors and Descendants of Tilla Banks and Mack & Anna Wall of Holmes and Carroll Counties, Mississippi."

In addition to an extensive listing of families, I have considerable background on the major plantations in Holmes and Carroll counties, particularly the Wanalaw Plantation. I have also included numerous lists of slaves owned by the Archer, Eggleston and related families in those counties, as well as Amelia County, VA and Anson County, NC. The slave lists are not to be missed by anyone searching for African American ancestors in Holmes and Carroll counties, as well as Claiborne County, where the Archers also owned large plantations.

The book is available at libraries in Holmes, Carroll and Leflore counties, the MDAH, the Library of Congress, the Allen County Public Library and others. It is available for FREE DIGITAL DOWNLOAD at www.familysearch.com in the books section.

The major family surnames are Banks, Tolbert, Riley and Wall(s). However, my family married into many of the families in Holmes, Carroll and Leflore counties.

As I look over the names in some of the African American searches on this site, I recognize the names Ross, Spann, Brewer, Brownlow, Keys, Burch, Holmes, Lewis, Landfair, Moore, Thomas, Gary, Moorehead, Coleman and many others in my family tree. Though my book is not indexed, please check out the families section. I can't respond to requests for look ups. I do know there is a Jeff Moore in my family. He lives in Chicago. I don't know anything about his Moore ancestors, as his ancestor married into my Walls family.

I would be honored to hear from anyone who finds information on their family in my book. Or anyone who would like to discuss the Eggleston and Archer families, or research related to slaveowners and plantations in Holmes and Carroll counties. My book is the result of more than 17 years of research.

Actually you have been a great help to me. I realize the difficulty of my query. I appreciate your time in responding.

I did see a document that a grandson of David Madison Hobbs wrote about his grandfather. He did not mention any particulars about my ancestor Neil Hobbs. However, it is documents such as these that may help me find some more clues and information on my ancestor Neil Hobbs. Especially if he worked in some capacity for the family. You have done an awesome job by documenting where David Madison Hobbs is buried. That is at least a starting point for my search.

I am afraid that I can't be of help for you. To determine the black mother of a slave is practically impossible, since she was also a slave. I'm sure you realize that generally speaking, slaves did not have last names. After slaves were freed, they were required to assume a last name and many of them used the name of their former owner.

I have done some research on David Madison Hobbs also. I know that he had several children with Emily Sandidge. I have also been told that he had a mulatto son named Neal Hobbs. Neal apparently worked for the Hobbs family and was a driver for two of his white sisters. Neal's grand-daughter was my grandmother. I believe Neal settled in Black Hawk, Mississippi. I am trying to find who was Neal's mother and just confirm if the facts I have are correct. Any guidance would be appreciated.

While you have not mentioned any of my (white) families, from my research I know that a high percentage of the people in the Durant area came from the Abbeville area of South Carolina. I suggest that you look at Pauline Young & Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas Jr., "Abstracts of Old Ninety-Six and Abbeville District Wills and Bonds", 2nd Reprint, 1977 to see if any of the families match yours. If so, it might be worthwhile to go to Abbeville and look at the full records (judging by your area code it shouldn't be too far to go for a day).

Some of the estate records list the names of slaves.

We are family finding our roots. I am researching Jane Moore and Lydia Ellis's children. My 3 great grandmother was Minnie Moore Anderson the eldest of Hamp Ellis children. I'm trying to finish Mary Moore McGee who was married to Wes MCgee family line. I am the historian and researcher of this family tree along with 3 other family members. It has been awhile, but I posted the pictures of the Ellis family(african ameriocans) in Wilkins Cemetery in Holmes County. These pictures are posted on findagrave.com. This is very near where the white Ellis family lived. The graves are a little separate from the white graves.

My ggggreatmother and her siblings were raised on George Henry Moore Plantation in Durant, MS. Her half siblings lived on the Ellis Plantation during the 1840-50's. She also told stories of how she meet her husband while free and a servant on the Jay Watson Plantation.
