Dear Msrobbns, I think your Joseph Madison Gregory was my grandfather. I don't know his date of birth but I do know he passed away in Sept. 1970 at the age of 94. He was a farmer from Arkansas, moved to California with his wife Georgia and children. They lived in the town/city of Carson as long as I can remember. My father was Fay who was the youngest and passed away in 1996 in Apple Valley, CA. The oldest was Stella who passed away in 2012 in Hawaii. Since my father was the youngest, all of my cousins were quite a bit older than I and over the years almost all of us have lost touch. My cousin Sandy Kellogg Clarke who lives in Hawaii the only relative who is close. Any info you can send me will be greatly appreciated. Please send info to egregory5@tampabay.rr.com. Also mention Papu in the subject box so I don't delete it. Looking forward to hearing from you, Gene Gregory

Actually I did. You have to write the Miss. Dept of History in Jackson but there is a cost. I paid $27 for the records I needed. You can get them for free if you live in the Jackson area and go into their location to do your own research.

I have visited the MDAH many times, as my father's family has many people who spent time in "whitfield". This past month, a noted Mississippi author reported on the discovery of unmarked graves while construction workers were digging for the construction of new buildings at UMMC. There are many admission books for your perusing at the archives, but it does take quite some time to look thru them all. Yesterday when I was there, they told me that they have started "digitalizing" the first volume! So hopefully, this info will be online in the near future.

What I have been able to find is my Great my Great Great grandfather John Henderson was born around 1830 in Tennessee. He was married to Chaney Deliliah Versia/Versey/Vesey born 1832 Tennessee died 1896, Robertson County, TX. ( so many different spellings on death certificates and 1880 census).
At the time of the 1880 census they were living in Robertson County, Hearne, TX with all their children, Nick, Delpha,Lucy, John,Henry( my great grandfather), Ben and Isom the children were all born in Mississippi. The children and parents eventually moved to Texas. I have checked ancestry.com, Family search, Freedmen's Bureau, and other sites. Then I have researched every possible website and book that talk about slave records . John Henderson is a common name in Tennessee and Mississippi. When checking Mississippi there are three John Henderson and other slave owners with Henderson surnames ( Adams,Amite and Warren ) in the 1850 slave schedule .

Can't imagine why they are sealed - at least not the old ones - since their death certificate gives the place they died. I mean the Census documents lists them as inmates/patients and gives the name of the institution. You can request a death certificate if you know the year and are close enough kin from the MS Dept of Health (I think that is the right department). The MS State Archives has death certificates (on microfysche) from about 1912 to 1940 something.

I'm looking for my great grandfather's grave birth record, death record, and marriage record. W. T. Harmon is buried somewhere in Hinds County, but I don't know where. I've looked on findagrave, but I couldn't find him. His full name is Walsh Taylor Harmon. He would have been born anywhere from 1885 to 1910. He married Myrtis Mangrum. Myrtis married three times before W.T., so her last name on the record could have been Edwards, Whiddon, or Burchfield. Mississippi doesn't have hardly any records on FamilySearch, so I can't find anything! All information appreciated!!!

Thanks very much! Actually, right after I posted I found the info I was looking for. It's from a free downloadable ebook through a google search that listed all the inmates, age, race, sentence, and what they were convicted of. The book is "Biennial Report of the Departments and Benevalent Instituions of the State of Mississippi for the years 1877-1879." I googled "Mississipi State Penitentiary 1880." It's a huge volume and there are volumes for a number of years available. THanks for your information!

The girls were sisters and their maiden name was Birdsong. His first wife was Bettie Birdsong. They were married in 1866 and she died of yelloe fever in 1867 in Millican, Texas. She is buried there in the Wheat Cemetery. He then moved to Bryan, Texas as did most of the survivors of the yellow fever epidemic. he was one of the founders of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Bryan, TX. The church was founded in December of 1867. He married Mary Elizabeth Birdsong in 1869. She is listed as Mary L. Birdsong. (The L. stands for Lizabeth) I am working on the biographies of our church founders. I know that George died in 1901. I have the obituary but I cannot find WHEN he moved to Weatherford, TX.

Pedigree resource file for Jesse b. 1784
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/3M9J-L3C
This file lists Jesse his wife margaret and their 10 kids. But the *Notes section is very helpful that's where I first got the maiden name of Davis for his wife.

I can't message you , because I am a "registered guest" right now & can't get access to your contact information. When I first posted this it was on a county page that was free, I think. They have changed everything since Ancestry took it over. Maybe you can get my email address on the contact info. Let me know if you can't. Thanks!
