I contacted the state hospitals in both Jackson, MS and Jackson, LA, and neither could find a record of my great-grandfather.

I also went to the MS State Archives and looked through the massive book of records for their state mental hospital. There was someone there with the same name (a somewhat common one), but his age and the years he was there didn't match up.
