Hi Barbara:
Did you read each name on the census record and check for transcription errors? My grt grt grdpa's last name was spelled "Mernhill" and it is suppose to be "Thornhill". When you look at the actual record, you can see the TH could have looked like the ME.....so that is a possibility. You would have to pull up each census for that hospital and look at each name.
I will do the same, I think for the next census...mine could be there.
We also need to remember, that at the time period, the recovery from the war and the economic times, does not mean our relatives were there because they were "insane". Many times, they were ill and poor and that is where they were put.
In Michigan, for example, my husband's grt grt grandmother, died in the "Poorhouse" in Berrien County.
Have you tried writing the archives and asking them to research it? Sometimes, there is a small fee. Good Luck on your searches.
Kay
