I recently recieved Samuel Rishon Brannan's military file from National Archives. Included in the file along with his widow's War of 1812 Pension Application was an affidavit by James & Robert Byrd filed in the Mobile County AL courts as a proof of death of Samuel Rishon Brannan.

This affidavit states that Samuel R. Brannan was buried at the Hannah-Brannan "Graveyard" and that they helped with the burial.

I am looking for the Hannah-Brannan Cenetery. Please contact me if you have information pertaining to this burial site or conections to the Brannan lineage.

Samuel Rishon Brannan was born in 1792 Fairfield County, SC, died 10/15/1868 Mobile County, AL. Married Celah "Seely" Mason on 9/5/1822 Mobile County, AL.

Marriage Application mentions Thomas Brannan, and looking for connection of Samuel R. Brannan & Thomas Brannan also.

Thanks in advance for any information you may have.

The only information I have at the present is a reference to her in the Greene County Marriage listing. She married N L C Cowart on November 24, 1876.
I am not certain if the spelling of her name is correct it could be a corruption caused by a faulty transcription.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Zula LOTT, looking for grave
Hello All, I am trying to find the burial location for my g-grandmother, Zula LOTT. Tha last place I know she lived was in Leakesville, Greene Co., MS. That was around 1900. I don't have any of her dates (b. or d.).
My father remembers being shown the headstone and thinks that it was fairly close to town. So that would mean it is somewhere in Greene Co. or just over the state line, in Mobile Co., AL, most likely. Zula's son, Charley LOTT, my grandfather, was born in Citronelle AL. 10-Dec-1898. Zula's father, Houston, is buried in the Bethel Cemetary, on Prine Rd., Citronelle, I was told. I didn't learn that until I was back home though, so I wasn't able to verify that either.
We tried to find Zula's grave when we were down there, but had no success. If anyone should happen to find my Zula LOTT, please let me know. I've been looking for her for 4 years now.
Thank you for your time. Happy Hunting! Ruthie
County Line School

The Committee to restore the County Line School in George County is seeking any information about the school. County Line School was established in 1880 and used as a school and church until 1924. The school building was moved to the Lucedale City Park over 30 years ago and is located there today. The name county line was given to the school because it was located in Greene County near the Jackson Greene County line until George County was formed in 1910.
Then the school became a part of George County. The school was located near Evanston and might be referred to as Evanston School. The committee would be interested in pictures of the school, names of students, and teachers.
1850 Greene County census question

Does anyone know why there were so many "students" listed in the 1850 census--specifically in District 7 around pages 47 and 48. A lot of these "students" had different surnames from the head of household and were from other states. I ask because my great grandfather, Edward Casey, born and orphaned in New York prior to 1850 was in Greene County in 1850, living with James Plott (or Platt) and his family. I presume this was too early for the "orphan trains".
Kathy Nance

I am looking for information on Martin Moody b. circa 1800 in SC. Probable parents are Charles Moody and Zylphia Cowart. Wife Rachel Shuler, who was much older than Martin. Daughters were Damarius and Miranda Moody.

I believe Miranda is my great grandmother Rachel Miranda who was married to William N. Weems. She was born Nov 1840 in MS and died after 1911 in Sulphur, Murray Co., OK and is buried in Palmer Cemetery near my grandfather Robert Eugene Weems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Not sure about the date but most likely between 1850-1880, a woman by the name of Peggy Miller from over on the Chickasawhay was assualted and murdered and her body thrown into lake in the Vernal Community. Someone confessed later to the murder. Does anyone know who confessed or more information on the murder?

JENKINS-PAYNE-PERKINS Trying to locate ancestors and the burial location for Darrell Payne (b. ca 1835, AL, probably Marengo Co.) Darrell m. 1-25-1855 to Martha Ellen Simpson in Washington Co., AL. He d. 12-8-1906 in the MS State Mental Hospital after 35+ years of being institutionalized for "Chronic Mania." The cemetery where patients were buried when the family did not claim their bodies is in terrible shape from what I am told (in Jackson on North State Street). As a professional counselor, it breaks my heart that Darrell may have had difficulty with the Civil War atrocities and was not understood. I have not been able to find any trace of a grave for Darrell in AL to date.
Darrell and Martha S. Payne had 2 daughters and only 1 son=John W. Payne b. Jan., 1860, TX who m. 12-24-1885 to Fannie Perkins. John W. Payne and Fannie settled in LAUREL (JONES) MS and raised a family [5 children: Wm. M., Evelyn, Ethel E., John A. & Valeria] Daughter Evelyn Payne m. Alexander A. Jenkins b. 3-4-1883, AL and they remained in Laurel. Alex was a Policeman for the City of Laurel on his WWI Draft Registration. The family is on the 1930 Census with widower, John W. Payne living with them. There were 2 Jenkins children: Clyde b. ca 1913 & Gladys b. ca 1911. I highly suspect that many of these folks died and are buried in or near LAUREL. Are there any census inventories for cemeteries in or near Laurel that I could check. I hope and pray that Darrell is buried with family. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

I am seeking information on a John Hall who is listed on the 1812 Miss. Terr. census in Greene County. My ggg grandfather Clem (also known as Clement and Clemson) Hall, born in the Carolinas ca. 1789, may have originally lived in the Green Co./Washington Co. areas of the old Miss. Terr. before moving to Monroe Co. (Al) by 1816 and then to Escambia Co. (Fla.). Clem Hall served under a Col. Josiah Skinner in the Miss. Volunteers during the War of 1812 according to bounty land claim. Am trying to find any connection between Clem Hall and the Halls who settled in the Greene County area before 1816. Also, any Merritt connection to Halls, as Clemson is supposed to have had a half brother or step brother named Benjamin Merritt. Any information on Halls and Merritts would be appreciated.

The Tucker I am looking for might have married an Elizabeth Badeau from LA or MS. At one time we thought we had them connected to Jane Humphry, but that is not correct.
John Jefferson Tucker was born in 1845 in McComb, MS, the son of the above query.J.J. Tucker married (in 1875) Anneta Whitcomb of Covington St. Tam., LA. JJ. and Anetta named one of their sons, Thomas Brinsfield Tucker. There might be a Brinsfield connection. We are having a devil of a time finding out about his parentage.
SMITH in Greene County

My grandfather was William Washington Smith. He was born about 1861 in Avera, Greene County. I recently found an 8 year old William with his family in the 1870 census for State Line post office. The siblings were Nancy,11; George,10; Mary J.,7; Daniel?,3; and Nathaniel,1. The adutls were 23 year old P.N. Smith and 29 year old Elizabeth Smith. Is there someone who knows anything about this family that might help me. I know nothing about my grandfather except what I have written here. He married my grandmother in Florida about 1890 and died (in 1929) and is buried in Washington County, Fla.

William Alexander Prentice and Mary Rainey

For a number of years have been attempting to trace the ancestry of WILLIAM A. PRENTICE . We know from Greene County census and other records that he was b. c. 1814 in the State of New York. That information has not helped much because during that period there were some 30 Prentice/Prentiss families scattered throughout that State and most had children in William's age range.

At some date before 1838, William, with or without his family, moved to Mississippi.
WILLIAM married MARY RAINEY/RANEY on 9 Nov 1838 in Hinds Co., MS. She was b. c. 1823. They appear a year and a half later in the 1840 Hinds Co., MS census. By 1860 William and his family were living in Leakesville, Greene County. His known children include:

1. James Alexander Prentiss, b. c. 1840. He married Sarah/Sally Roberts.
2. Mary Prentiss, b. c. 1842. She married Richard Pipkins.
3. Sarah Ann Prentiss, b. c. 1842. She married James P. Williams.
4. John Alexander "Alexander" Prentiss, b. Aug 1848. He m. Catherine "Kate" Williams.

William died August 1849 in Greene County of consumption. He may be buried in the Licksville Cemetery. We have a reasonably complete family tree showing most of his descendants, but have had no luck in identifying William's parents and roots.

We would surely appreciate any help you can provide in identifying William's parents. In exchange for your kind help, and if you are interested, we would be pleased to send you our information about his descendants as well as his ancestors if we can identify his parents. I have some 35,000 Prentices (Prentis, Prentiss) in my database and think it probable that with his parents' names I can trace his roots back additional generations.

Joe Dewald
email: dewald@prenticenet.com

We show on the census as a place of birth as MS, GA, SC, AL. We have no idea where. We believe she was probably born in GA with her husband. NOT sure!!! We are getting desperate.

I am descendant of Maher Lyle through Ethridge Edward, James Edward, George Washington. I have quite a bit of information on Lyle line to Maher in Jackson Co., GA (also in Union Co. SC and Halifax, VA) but stops after that. Does anyone have any information?

I am trying to search the line of James Edward Lyle's wife, Mary Elizabeth Young. I believe her parents are David Young (b Apr 1832) and Lucy Dickson (b 1845). James Dunnam has transcribed information but I haven't been able to go further back than David Young and Lucy Dickson. Does anyone have any information to share?

I am seeking information on a sawmill community known as Grafton during the years 1922 to 1925. My relatives lived there and I'm trying to get a copy of marriage record for one of my uncles. Royal L McGill married Lavina Sullivan. His divorce decree issued in FL stated place as "Leafville, Miss." I don't know the county for sure, but they came from AL. Would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.

I am looking for any info on the Sullivan/Williams connection. My G-Grandfather was Sim B Sullivan. He is listed in the 1930 US Census (StateLine, MS) age 62 with wife Lucille (Williams) age 30 and son Sim Jr age 2. He was first married about 1899/1900 according to this census record. Sim Sr. died when my Grandfather, Sim Jr. was only 5 years old. Any info at all is greatly appreciated.
