do you have any children listed for George Wilson and Eliz. Ellzey? I have a brick wall with Elizabeth Wilson born 1846 in MS. The time frame fits, and the general area. She is the mother of Castina Antoinette Wilson who married Jasper Lusk in Amite Co. in 1869. Eliz. next married Lewis Spillman and had two more children.

I don't have any info at hand regarding Calderwood's death in Greene Co., MS, but just came across the cemetery record for his second wife, Sarah Sumrall, who is buried near their daughter Elizabeth Mason Bounds in the Buttram family cemetery in Lamar Co., MS. I'd be happy to share any other info I have on this line.

Thank you, Linda! It finally dawned on me what FAG meant.. yes, I have seen those pictures. I visited the cemetery myself about 5 years ago, lots of family there. I was wondering if there were surviving records anywhere in the county or churches regarding burials? It's obvious there are other graves there, and I'm thinking it must be the location for several on my list, but I'm so far away I haven't been able to get back down there. Thank you for your work in that area. The pics and bios are appreciated.

1850 Greene County census question

Does anyone know why there were so many "students" listed in the 1850 census--specifically in District 7 around pages 47 and 48. A lot of these "students" had different surnames from the head of household and were from other states. I ask because my great grandfather, Edward Casey, born and orphaned in New York prior to 1850 was in Greene County in 1850, living with James Plott (or Platt) and his family. I presume this was too early for the "orphan trains".
Kathy Nance

Birth records for both AL and MS were not officially recorded as early as 1870 so you're not likely to find a record except in a family Bible. However, I did find the following in the 1880 Census for Beat 4 of Washington Co., AL, which borders Greene Co., MS.

1880 Beat 4 Washington Co., AL

Lucas, John, 52, farmer, b. in MS
Naomi L., 44, wife, b. in AL
William E., 24, son, b. in AL
Laura, 21, daughter, b. in AL
John W., 18, son, b. in AL
Lucretia, 13, daughter, b. in AL

My grandfather was Ira Keith Brannan, son of Ira Martin Brannan, grandson of Henry Brannan (b. 1811 in SC d. Jan. 22,1896 likely in Greene Co., MS). According to friend who is a descendant of Calderwood Mason, his son John Mason married Sarah Brannan, daughter of William Brannan and Anna Malone. It is his opinion that William Brannan and that my ancestor Henry Brannan were sons of a Thomas Brannan of SC.

Yes, there was the Greene County Herald. It has been around since about 1898. There were some old copies in the courthouse basement a couple of years ago. Some issues of it are also on microfilm. Try the website for the Mississippi Archives and check their microfilm list.

County Line School

The Committee to restore the County Line School in George County is seeking any information about the school. County Line School was established in 1880 and used as a school and church until 1924. The school building was moved to the Lucedale City Park over 30 years ago and is located there today. The name county line was given to the school because it was located in Greene County near the Jackson Greene County line until George County was formed in 1910.
Then the school became a part of George County. The school was located near Evanston and might be referred to as Evanston School. The committee would be interested in pictures of the school, names of students, and teachers.
You may not see this but I just saw it and thought I would reply. Hiram Davis (married to Merle Dykes)was my uncle's (by marriage) brother. His name was Arlie Davis. He and my aunt Maudie Mae Ainsworth Davis are also buried in the Davis Cem. I'm also related to Dykes. My ggg-grandfather was Benjamin Franklin Dykes. He had a son with the same name.

Dawn, I'm having problems with sending my e-mail so I'm gonna have to write to you this way. I thought I had written to you several years ago. I've got some e-mails I had saved about the Dykes line but they weren't from you so I don't know. The farthest back I have on the Dykes is my ggg-grandfather Benjamin Franklin Dykes born 1781. That's through his daughter, Martha who married John Thomas Ainsworth. There were 3 Benjamin Franklin Dykes. The one born in 1781, his son born ca. 1838 and then HIS son born 1857. Can you make a connection with any of these? My e-mail is benndale_lady@yahoo.com.

Hi, This is great! I was beginning to think I wasn't going to find out more on this line. I recently lost a lot of my info and so am having to reconstruct it.

My name is Dawn Dykes Petz. Please contact me at ccddpetz@seark.net

I can't remember how, but also had Ainsworth names in my files. I've also thought that the BFDykes line probably tied into my Dykes line, but have never been able to figure out how. I know that my Dykes lines were in and around the area where the BFD lines were, but the tie-in is far enough back and the records aren't there(not yet found anyway) to show the connection, so........

So glad to hear from you. Please write

Dawn

Hi, I haven't ever been able to tie in the BF Dykes line with my line, but I know they are related -- just don't know how. I figure it is one generation back from what I know. ha I can't get back further than my gg-gfather, James Dykes, b.abt 1811, La?. I know he marr. Mary Ann Rutland and I know who their children were and that James had a brother by the name of Jacob who marr. Sarah Rutland ( sister to Mary Ann), well, that is about all I know. Although I don't know the relationship between my Dykes and yours, I really feel like they were related, as were the La Dykes. I had several outer lines that tied into your Dykes lines and my grandfather lived over in that area after he marr. my grandmother. She was a Hinton/Andrews from the Perry Co., Ms. area.

I lost a lot of my info, but I do have paper backup, so will have to find time soon to get it out and look it over to refresh my memory, etc...

It will be after Labor day weekend.

Dawn

OK cousins, I know you must be out there. I am listing several surnames with the hope that one of you may also be searching for information. I would like to find any memorabilia, stories, recollections to accompany my factual data on the family of my gr-gr-grandfather Edward Etheridge Lyle (Liles, Lyles) who lived primarily in Greene Co., MS and had the following children: Eliza (married Henry Nelson), Sarah (married Hiram Moulds), Elizabeth Jane (married Allen Williams), Martha Ann (married Nathan Nelson and David Sullivan Willliams), Louisa (married George Marion Dallas Pipkins) and James Edward (married Patty Hillman and Harriet Young). This family was in Greene Co from 1830's through 1900's with some time spent in Jasper Co., MS. They also moved to Polk Co., TX and were located in census there in 1860...I would like to confirm the reason for the move because daughters and husbands also moved. Look forward to hearing from you.
