Maude Swilley Simmons, Forrest County, Mississippi

I am trying to track down Maude Swilley, daughter of Bernard Swilley and Sophronia Cameron. Maude was born in 1903 in Perry County (present day Forrest Co).

Maude married Lemuel Simmons on 12 Oct 1917 in Lamar County. They lived in Forrest Co in the Carnes area after they married. They had 4 children, Trellis (Tommy) 1919, Opal 1922, Stuart 1924 and a baby that was born and died in abt. 1926.

Maude ran off with an unknown man in 1926 right before her husband Lem died with cancer. Maude left the children and never came back. The children were farmed out to various family members. Two of them spent some time in the Baptist Children’s Home. I am trying to find out who Maude ran off with and where they went. I have already checked with Forrest County and they couldn’t find a 2nd marriage for Maude.

Lem was one of my grandfather’s older brothers. I am hoping to hook up with someone that knows the Swilley family and maybe knows what happened to Maude. Since my grandfather was the youngest of 11, I am having a hard time finding anyone still around that was alive back then. I got the information from one of my grandfather’s cousins that is still living. She is 85 and lucky for me sharp as a tack.

Michele Simmons Lewis
ancestoring@gmail.com
What resource did you find the last name of Boniol in. I am researching Elizabeth {?}b, abt, 1787 Ga. mother of Seaborn Marion Lee (1823) brother to your George Washington Lee. In all my research the name Boniol never appeared until this post on Ancestry. It appears Lee researchers have taken this information and used it without resourcing it. Which means it is false info. I would love to know the resource, so I can continue with my research. If you do not have a resource please let us Lee family researchers know so that we may pursue other avenues to find out her real name and correct our family trees.

Im trying to find some information about an old school that my grandfather went to when he was a boy. His sister was killed at the school in about 1917 while throwing logs into a wood burning stove and her apron caught fire and im told she ran out of the school and was covered with a blanket and died on the front lawn. I was told that the school burned down but was wanting to find out the name of the school and maybe try and find newspaper article about her death if there was one.

I am looking for information on Carlos Evon Lee Sr.'s FIRST WIFE Eliza. According to the 1910 Perry County census, Eliza was born about 1883. She died between 12 Jan 1912 (the birth of her daughter Beulah) and 03 Feb 1916 (when Carlos married his second wife, Claudia Mae Simmons). [where they lived would be present day Forrest County]

A descendant of Carlos and his 2nd wife says that Eliza was also a Lee, daughter of John Lee. I can't verify this. I have been unable to find Carlos and Eliza's marriage license though this same descendant was able to give an exact date of marriage (25 Dec 1903 in Perry County).

In the 1900 census there is an Eliza Lee the right age with the parents of Elijah and Julia Lee in Perry County.

At this point I don't know if Eliza WAS a Lee or if her father was named John.

Anyone with info?

michele simmons lewis
I have some information on the Tisdales from Perry County MS and am looking for help on others.

I have info that Pleasant Tisdale (possibly William Pleasant Tisdale) born 1755 in Lunenburg County Virginia then moved to Craven County (now Sumter) South Carolina and lived and died and is buried in Augusta,Perry County Mississippi. He was married to Mary Ann "Polly" Flowers who was born in Duplin Co North Carolina. His father was John Tisdale 1730 (NOT the John Tisdale family in Taunton, Mass.) It is believed he travel to Mississippi on the way to Louisanna to meet up with other Tisdales. they stopped in Perry County and stayed. He had two sons with him, Seaborn and Peter Corbin. My dilemma is that I cannot find a record of them in Perry County. I know they were there and part of the family migrated to Jones and Newton counties. I am looking for information on where he might be buried and what land he owned.

I live in Florida and, while I am in Mississippi for reunions, I have not found what I am looking for.

On Perry County Gen web site have found a William Tisdale who was a coroner in Perry County, but no dates ate listed to see if they fit.

Also what is the head covering the women are wearing and for what occasion? I believe the three women in the middle of the photo, from left to right, are Roxie Shattles, Sara Holder Shattles, and Mattie Shattles.

My great-great grandmother, Celia Myers, was born in 1820 in South Carolina and was owned by either David or Daniel Myers.

In order to find out more about Celia Myers or confirm my research, I will have to review documents of the white Myers, who were slave owners, and I would appreciate it greatly if you would share your information from the white Myers with me.

Thanks.

This is intriguing. I am looking for data on parents of William Wilkins and of his wife Catherine Weldon , presumed to be the daughter of Isaac Weldon, and whose son,William Weldon Wilkins married Minerva Hardesty Gordon here in Natchez, MS as per a family Bible record, and graves stones, etc. Catherine Wilkins was born 1786 in Princess Anne Co, VA and died in Natchez, MS. in 1815. The middle name Weldon leads me to believe this is Catherine Weldon who was named in her father's will---not at my fingertip but reply and I will look up the copy of the will for you.

Hello,

I just found the Wilkins message board.....

William Edwin King was my 2nd great-grandfather. He was born 14 May 1849 in Tolbert County, Georgia and died 18 Jan 1914 in Lamar County, Mississippi. He is buried in the Richburg Cemetery not far from Hattiesburg. He married Martha Elizabeth "Betty" Wilkins in 1871. She was born June 1854 in Texas and died in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She is buried in the Richburg Cemetery, also. Her parents were Isaac Wilkins, who was born in Alabama, and Jane ?, who was born in Texas.

Their seven children were:

Will, who married Missouri Bailey

Jake L., who married #1 Lou Quick, who was born 1889 in MS. He had red hair and brown eyes. Had cancer and TB. Jake had light, firey red hair. He was taller than is brother, Thomas Cecil, but not a tall man.

Alvin Curtis, who married Nell Mae Dees 15 April 1906 and later married Autry Smith. He was born 15 March 1885 in Poplarville, MS, and died 06 Sept 1947 in Mobile, AL. He is buried in Gulfport, MS...I don't have the name of the cemetery, though. I believe someone told me he is buried next to his first wife. I was also told that Alvin was a preacher.

Lula, who married ? Bounds, and later married H. Chester Jones. They lived in Petal, MS.

Thomas Cecil, who married Elizabeth "Lizzy" Jane Ladner
(These were my great grandparents.) He was short and had dark hair and eyes. He was born 15 Sept 1876 in Stateline, MS and died 13 June 1933 in Purvis, Lamar County, MS. I believe he is also buried in the Richburg Cemetery. He also went by the nickname of "T.C.", and he was a preacher for the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Purvis, and also was Mayor of Purvis in the 1920's. He also was a brick mason.

Daisy, born, died, and buried in Poplarville, MS. I don't have any other information on her.

Christine, who married a "Doc" Soule, I believe from the New Orleans area. My mother told me his family had a big tobacco factory near there. She was short and had dark hair and eyes.

This is pretty much what I have on William and Betty's family. I hope it has been of some help. I am happy to share whatever I have. Could you send me information you may have, especially on Alvin Curtis's family? I would really appreciate it.

Georgia

Her father was John Ford and her mother was Susie Lee. She was buried in Okahola, MS Nov 29, 1955. My grandfater died in either 1964 or 65. Are there any relatives that know anything about Boone Cemetery, I was told that they were possibly buried in the boone Cemetery but can't find a grave there. I did notice several Fords buried in that cemetery though.

James Williams 1855-1878

I am looking for information on my great great grandfather. I know very little about him. I believe his name was James Williams, born abt 1855. He was married to Hanna C. Shows they had one child Peter Cornelius Williams. James died March 1878 just 3 months before his son was born. My Gandma recently told me that he might have been a logger and was killed by a falling tree. She also said she thought that James and Hanna had lived in Jasper County. I found his first name, birth and death date on one world tree. I have no evidence to prove any of it. All I know for sure is that in 1880 the United States Federal Census shows Hannah and Peter Williams living back with her family the Shows family in Jones County and it says she is a widow. If you know anything about any of these people I would love to hear from you.

I recently got in touch with a family member through the message boards and she has the same info on James Williams but she added that her records showed that he was buried in Glendale cemetery Forrest County Mississippi. I have checked the "Find A Grave" website but had no luck in finding James Williams in that cemetery I did however find Hannah C. Shows (Hannah S. Pittman) and her second husband James Warren Pittman.

Scott Street Cemetery

There is now a burial list at the City Cemetery office, for the long neglected Scott Street Cemetery:

http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=20107...

The Scott Street Cemetery was an African-American community cemetery that opened in Hattiesburg in the 1890s. The city took it over for maintenance in the 1970s but didn't keep official records.
