Seeking information on a physician who was known to be in DeSoto Co MS in 1860 in the Elm Grove area:

Found with his name spelled in many various ways:

John D. Nietskie
John D. Nictskie
John D. Neitscke
John D. Neetche
J. D. Neetche
J. D. Nietskie
J. D. Nictskie
J. D. Neitscke

Born in 1818 in PA

Found in 1850 in Hardeman Co TN in the household of William A. Moore; also included in this household are:

William A Moore b. c 1796 NC
Harriett Moore b. c 1798 NC
William Moore b. c 1825 AL
Merica Moore b. c 1832 TN
Thomas Moore b. c 1836 TN
Laura Moore b. c 1838 TN
A J Howard b. c 1831 AL
Susan Howard b. c 1827 TN
Sophronia Ham b. c 1845 TN
William Ham b. c 1847 TN

Many of the people in this household then move to DeSoto Co MS by 1860 (William A. Moore, A J Howard, Susan Howard, Sophronia Ham, William Ham).

A J Howard is found in DeSoto in 1860 listed as a Merchant and in his house Susan Howard and Sophronia Ham and William Ham are living with him.

The Doctor has his own residence in 1860 and in his house are two children Thomas b. c 1853 AR and a female child with the initial E. born c 1851 TN. The doctor remains in DeSoto from at least 1860 to July of 1868.

In 1870 the doctor moves once again this time to Somerset, Perry Co, OH. On this census he is found with a wife by the name of Clara L. b. c 1830 in Alsace and one son John b. c 1862 in AR. The other two children from the 1860 DeSoto Co census are not with him.

In 1880 the doctor is in Reading, Perry Co OH, again with his wife Clara Louesiana.

The only other information I have on this doctor is that his father was born in PRUSSIA and his mother in PA. He may have been in some sort of legal action in DeSoto involving a Stephen Williams and a Mr. Spivy or Spivey.

It is suspected that he is the "Dr." mentioned in a letter written by Michael William Shanahan dated 4 Jul 1868 which can be read online at: http://home.att.net/~littlehouseantiques/mws1868.html

Michael William Shanahan, an Irish immigrant was also in DeSoto Co in 1860 living with the merchant A J HOWARD. Michael Shanahan was a friend of Sophronia aka Sophie Ham. Sophie Ham married another friend of his, Leander "Lee" Slaughter in DeSoto and they then moved to Hart Co KY.

Other members of the SLAUGHTER family also moved to KY, namely Theoclis SLAUGHTER (m. J. G. HARDY) and Cyndasilla Dink SLAUGHTER (m. ? Richardson). Stephen SLAUGHTER also moved to KY (not known if he married).
All of the SLAUGHTER 's mentioned above believed to be the children of John Slaughter and his first wife Isabella [Calhoun?].

If you have any connections to any of these families I'd love to hear from you.
