In 1926, Baby Yates was born at South MS Charity Hospital in Laurel. Baby Yates is the name listed on the Birth Certificate. His parents were listed as Albert Yates and Lillie Powell and residents of Collins. Still living in Covington Co., MS, one would think that the 1930 census would have Baby Yates with his parents. Well, Albert Yates had died in 1929 and Lillie had remarried to William Wash Temple. The oldest child, A J Yates Jr, is in the household of William & Lillie Temple but no younger child. The plot thickens. After deaths of Lillie and her sister Arlona (Powell)Gentry Saulters McKee Newman, another of Lillie's children born during the 1930's was told that the child Arlona/Lona had reared was really the child that Lillie had given birth to in 1926; that Lona had never given birth. Looking again at the 1930 Census for Covington Co., there is a Jim Saulters with wife Lona and a child Robert D Gentry listed as as adopted son. The relationship is to the head. The Dept of Health Vital Records said they have no record of Baby Yates ever being named, nor any delayed record of birth. They have no adoption record. The questions:
Does anyone know of this supposedly adoption?
Does anyone know if Baby Yates and Robert Dennis Gentry was one and the same?
Would the adoption papers be open to the public at the Covington Co. Courthouse?
All persons named are now deceased, so cannot ask any of them. Any assistance will be appreciated.
