I'm not related to your Quinn family, but I was looking for a research challenge and I think I found your John Jefferson Quinn.

1910 Choctaw Co. MS
Robert E. Quinn 42 MS
Carrie E. Quinn 42 MS
Pauline Quinn 13 MS (daughter)
Cecil Vaughn 19 MS (Stepson)
John J. Quinn 31 MS (brother)
Juanita V. Quinn 17 MS (stepdaughter)
Virginia Quinn 8 mo. MS (step granddaughter)

It appears that John Jefferson Quinn had an older brother, Robert Estell Quinn. Robert married Carrie. Carrie had been previously married to a man named __ Vaughn. In her first marriage, Carrie had three children: Sidney, Cecil, and Juanita Vaughn. (Sidney was born about 1888 and does not appear in 1910 census with family. She may have died young, or perhaps she was married and out of house by 1910).

By 1920, John J. Quinn was in Clay Co. MS.

1920 Clay Co. MS
J. J. Quin 45 MS
Juanita Quin 26 MS can't be sure of ages - hard to read
Virginia Quin 10
J. J. Quin Jr. 8 (28 May 1912 - 17 Oct 1920)
Charles Quin 3

By 1930, they were in Union Co. MS.

1930 Union Co. MS
John J. Quinn m 50 MS
Juanita Quinn f 38 MS (wife)
Charles Quinn m 13
Jessie P. Quinn f 7
Elsie E. Quinn f 5

So, you can see that John and Virginia actually had at least five children: Virginia, John J. Jr., Charles, Jessie, and Elsie. The second child, John J. Jr. died young. I didn't find this family in 1940 census.

John Jefferson Quinn registered for the draft in Clay County, MS in 1918. This W.W. I draft registration shows his birth date as 22 Dec 1878.

The parents of John Jefferson Quinn were Joseph Houston Quinn and Sarah unknown.

The parents of Joseph Houston Quinn were Robert Quinn and Caroline Wilkins.

Many of these Quinns, including your grandfather John J. Quinn are buried in Webster Co. MS. See the following link at "Find a Grave" (just click a name and it will take you to their memorial page)...

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gsr&GSfn=&...

You will find your Quinn family on Roots Web World Connect here:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

I hope this information is helpful.
Seeking any information that may be available regarding John Jefferson Quinn and Amanda Juanita Vaughn. Both were born and married in Mississippi. They had four siblings, Charles V. Quinn, Virginia Quinn, Elsie Quinn and Jessie Quinn. Charles Quinn was my father. However, my father was born in Mantee, Webster County, Mississippi. I can find no record of their residence in Webster County nor can I find any records indicating the marrige of John Jefferson Quinn to Amanda Juanita Vaughn. John Quinn was born in 1880, but can find no record of where in Mississippi. Any and all assistance would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you.

This is way late to reply but I just read your inquiry. I think the cemetery is indeed called Pheba Cemetery, but I have no idea who manages it, and it's been years since I lived out that way, but I imagine the county supervisor has some idea about who manages it. Check with county clerk's office for a phone number.

the reason I read your message is that I saw where you had updated some census records on some Tindalls; do you have an interest in that family? I didn't find any Tindalls in your public trees.
Thanks,
Nancy Sparkman Brownlee

I will keep the names, though, in case they might lead to confirmation that she was, indeed, enrolled there.
I've been told that there are/were more than one women's colleges in the West Point, MS area around the turn of the century (and what a difficult task it was to convince the powers that be that education would not cause women's heads to explode.)
I greatly appreciate your efforts!

I don't know if this will help you, but I am attaching a photo of my grand aunt, Neva Carothers, and the 1899 graduating class of Southern Female College. On the front of the photo the arrow at the bottom points to Neva. The other attachment is a list of those in the photo sent to Neva's niece, Nell, who is my aunt. There is an Annie Reynolds listed. I don't know if there is a possibility that the surname was misspelled and that this may be your Annie or not. Also, the list does not seem to indicate the order in the photo, but perhaps it may still help you. The 1899 class may also be too early to contain your Annie. Best of luck to you!

I realize that this is an old post and you may have heard from someone who knew Will and Ella Taylor. They lived one mile east of the Columbus and Greenville Railway Station( now non-existent ) where Highway 389 crosses the railroad track. Their house is no longer there but I understand that a William "Bill" Wooten built a house on the property located south of the railroad track. I could be mistaken about that. Mrs. Ella as we called her, a short heavy-set woman, was my Sunday School teacher and she sang in the choir at Pheba First Missionary Baptist Church. She had a beautiful soprana voice. Will also sang in the choir. They both could sing the notes to the songs. They always came to church neatly dressed. Mrs Taylor had a niece Mary Alice Skinner who moved to Greenville, MS. Mary Alice had two daughters,Mary Wilson Skinner and Beatrice Skinner who, if they are still alive, probably still live in Greenville. If you go to Pheba,do so on a Sunday. That way you,d be sure to find someone at the church who could direct you to the old Taylor property.

I'm looking for information on John Seals and Celia Yates. John Seals was born in about 1854 in North Carolina and was Mulatto. My great-great-great grandmother, Celia was born in about 1857 in Mississippi. I have learned that they lived in Clay County,Mississippi in 1880. After that they just seem to disappear. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank You

Thank yoiu for your reply. I'm sorry to be so slow in getting back to you. I am interested in finding the grave of Jesse Monroe Nichols who died abt July, 1877. He owned land near there so was probably buried in one of the cemeteries close by. One of his daughters married a Cousin (surname not relation) and I notice there is a Cousin cemetery. I would appreciate any help as I live too far away to go there personally.

That area belonged to Chickasaw County prior to 1873. We have some of those records here in Chickasaw. Primarily deeds. I'm not certain if we surveyed the cemeteries there for our cemetery books. However I know that the cemeteries were recorded by volunteeres. There is a Clay County History book may have some records as well. I have access to that book.

His son, James David Stone(1839-1904) and Margaret Caroline Vaughn (1840-1905) were my great-grand parents who lived in Clay county, MS. Do you have any information on the parents of Chaney B. W. Stone? I believe the mother was Nancy Ann Smart Sudduth, and Benjamin Stone (I don't know which Benjamin Stone it is.

The father of James David Stone is Chaney B. W. Stone and James David's mother is Salina Jane Henley. Salina Jane's fahter id Edmund Henley.
I believe strong that the parents of Chaney are Nancy Ann Smart and Benjamin Stone. (I just don't know for sure which this Benjamin Stone is.) At one time (but can't find it now) I found a marriage record for nancy ann Smart in the early 18900s in Georgia. the father of Nancy Ann Samrt is James Smart and mother is Piety Ledbetter.

Does anyone have any information on the first wife of Benjamin W. Stone? In the 1870 census he is listed with two children. His wife is not listed so must have died before 1870. Also his mother, Salina Stone, was in the household. Then in 1880 census the two children, Jane and Mary Stone are living in the household of David B. Driver and they are listed as grandchildren. In one of the listings above someone found Salina Stone in a Vaughn household and the second wife of Benjamin W. Stone, Tabitha Stone and three Stone children, not Jane and Mary, or listed. David B. Driver is my great great grandfather.

His father was James Neely Carothers b. 13 Nov. 1805 in Union District, South Carolina d. 25 May 1891 in Van Vleet, Chickasaw Co., Miss. James Neely was a Presbyterian minister, who served churches in Alabama and Mississippi.
I just saw this post this morning, so I'm coming in a bit late. My mother's surname was Carothers. Her father was George Carothers (Black, b. 1889 in Monroe County, MS). His father was Willis Carothers (b. 1860 in West Point/Clay County, MS). We're not sure if he was Black or Mulatoo, because we can't figure out who his father might have been. His mother's name was Lydia Lenoir (b. 1824, somewhere in Mississippi, possibly on the Lenoir Plantation).

I'd be willing to share information...
Always glad to connect with someone in the Thompson line. This is my mother's grandmother's line (Aletha Jane Thompson) but I had some old letters which intrigued me, and I've worked to find out more about them.

How do you connect to Gideon?

Here's his obit:
G.N. Thompson Dead

G.N. Thompson, or as he is usually called, Grandpa Thompson, died at his
home in the west part of town this morning at 5 o'clock. [May 29, 1908]

The funeral services were held at the Tabernacle at 4 o'clock this
afternoon, conducted by Revs. G.B. Airhart, S.J. Vaughan and U.C.
Verterans, and the burial immediately followed in Rose Hill Cemetery.

It was not generally known that Mr. Thomspon was seriously ill until he was
almost at death's door. He had a severe spell a short time ago, but had
recovered and was down town a few days before his death. Everything that
neighbors, friends and medical science could do to restore life and bring
him back to his wanted health, but being aged there was no structure to
build on, hence the grim reaper death came and called him to the other world.

He leave a wife and other relatives to mourn his departure unto whom the
Telgram with other friends extends deep sympathy.

THOMPSON- Merkel, TX June 8 - G.N. Thompson, a highly respected citizen of
Merkel, who was 85 years old, died here Saturday. He was a native of
Alabama, came to Texas in 1866 and settled in Lamar County, moving to
Taylor County in 1880. He knew four years service as a brave Confederate
soldier, belonging to the Thirteenth Alabama Cavalry. He was a member of
U.C.V. Camp No 79.
[Clipping from Dallas Morning News]

Note:
Guid N. Thompson was the brother of Carroll Thompson, Lydia Thompson Wortham
(Mrs. Tom B. Wortham), David, Albert, John C. Thompson, Aletha Jane
Thompson Hightower (Mrs. Raleigh Hightower) of Navarro County, and Sarah
Thompson (married name unknown)

Looking for 1900 census record for Major and Savannah Ford--Clay County, MS

Major Ford (born 1872, MS) and Savannah Yates (born 1870, MS) married 12 Apr 1891 in Clay County, MS and had the following children:
Mary Ford 1893
Wiley Ford 1895
Major Ford, Jr 1896
Rosa Ford 1898
Cora Ford 1900
Martha J 1903
Cannie bell Ford 1905
Savannah Ford 1906
Amorie Ford abt 1906
Eddie Ford 1911
Estelle 1914
Charlie Ford 1918

The following information is gleamed from census records in Clay County, MS.
In 1800, both Major and Savannah “Tennessee” (single) are found in Clay County, MS
In 1900, I could not find any of the Ford family, although they have 5 children by that point.
In 1910, Major and 5 children plus 4 more are living with Savannah’s mother, Rebecca Brownlee. Savannah cannot be found.
In 1920, Major is remarried to Caroline Cockrell who has two children from a previous marriage. In the 1920 household is Major his minor children, plus three more children he and Savannah had between 1911-1918, and his step-son from Caroline. I believe Major and Caroline had no children. Still no Savannah (1st wife) to be found.
In 1930, Major has remarried again to Huldah Calvert and has had no more children. No Savannah (1st wife) to be found.

The question is 1.)where is Major and Savannah Ford in 1900 and
2.)where is Savannah from 1900 on. She continues to have children with Major until 1918.
One questionable find: in 1900 there is a Major Ford and Savannah Ford with similar birth years and marriage year living in Florence Stewart County, Georgia, but with children of differing names and birth dates.

Thank you for your attention to this query. I’d appreciate any information regarding the Ford family.
Pamela Shotwell-Waldon
ibgodschld@aol.com

Shelton Family from Clay County, Miss & St. Francis, Ark.

Does anyone have information on the Shelton family who lived in Clay County, Miss and moved to St. Francis, AR. I am researching my grandfather's family and I believe they are related to these Sheltons but I have yet to make the definite connection. Here is what I know:

My great grandmother's name was Mattie Shelton born 1880 or 1887(MISS)(I don't know if that was her maiden or married name). She had sons: Willie born 1909 in West Point, MS and Earnest born 1912 in West Point, MS (Earnest was my grandfather). My grandmother says she had another son that was older than Willie and Earnest Shelton named Anderson Jennings, they called him "Buddy." I am not sure of his birthdate and I recently found out that they had a sister who died when she was five by falling from a horse.(I do not know her name). They moved to Arkansas sometime between 1912-1920. They all died there.

It seems they moved here around the same time that Charley Shelton and his family moved to Arkansas. I am estimating they moved sometime between 1916 and 1920 since Knowledge Shelton was born in Miss in 1916 but lived in AR by 1920.

On the 1920 census Mattie Shelton is listed married to a Isic(Isie) Woods and lived with Willie and Earnest in Crittenden Cty, AR. By 1930 she was back in St. Francis and listed as a widow and Earnest and Willie were still at home. But she had gone back to the name Shelton - she was no longer using Woods. This is also where Earnest met my grandmother. They later moved to Brinkley, AR, Monroe County and had seven children. Willie also move to Brinkley and Anderson Jennings lived nearby in Cotton Plant. If you have any information you can share about these families, please contact me.

Thank you in advance,
D. Latrice Shelton
Little Rock, AR
Brinkley, AR (hometown)

I also wanted to tell you, in the 1870 Census, there's also the Johnson family. Have you met any of them or count them as family. Well, they might just be that we've been around each other so long that we count each other family, but my granmother talks about Cousin Janie Moore, who happens to really be Jane Johnson Moore, the daughter of Edward Johnson and Betsy. Well I met Janie Moore's granddaughter in Chicago (Mildred), and of course now she has grandchildren. But I have that contact info if you need it.

In discussions with Cousin Mildred, she said that Janie Moore used to say that her father was from South Carolina, but his family had come off the boat from Africa in Annapolis, MD. I assumed that to mean maybe a generation or 2 prior. About Betsey, all she knew is that she had roots in Maryland. As I remember more, I'll write it.

Now one thing I've never got my finger around is that Evans Sr. always says he's from Tennessee, in 1870, 1880, and 1900. Do you happen to know, or can you ask the historian that you know, if anyone knows where Evans might have originally come from? And why he got the name Evans, or antyhing more about him.

Yes, Evans Calvert Sr. had a son named Simon born around 1856 who was the older brother of Evans Jr. However there was another Simon Calvert, born around 1846 who was likely the brother to Evans Sr. This older Simon Calvert was the gentleman who married my gg grandmother's aunt (Julie McBee). In 1870 this Simon Calvert was listed with his mother Zilpha. Now I'm not sure, but I think this older Simon and Evans Sr. were brothers. What's confusing is that this Simon also had a son named Simon, and he was blind, and my grandmother knew him. But we are still from the same family. This is one family, just confusing in that they name each other after each other, constantly.
