J.L. is James L with wife lona in alligator, MS. I saw that other one too. Sometimes in the origianl census the writing is very hard to read so people guess.
Alot of my ancestors used itinals too instead of names.
My direct line comes from MO not MS. My great great great Uncle was L. G Galloway(Lewis Garrett Galloway or Louis G Gallaway)sometimes spelled with an "a" who was sec of state of MS from 1841 to 1843 his sone DD Gallaway(Davbid Dickenson Gallaway) was in bolivar in the 1900 census and dropped off the map his brother Lewis/louis Galllaway was there too and then married and mocved to kentucky where he died. My great great great Grandfather was Lewis Gallaways brother(he was born in Ms but moved to LA and his son my great great grandfather was born and raised in missiouri.
I have not woerked on that line for ages am volunteering for a website called RAOGK which does funeral notice and obit lookups for people who died in differnt parts of the US and need someon to do lookups in that state.
I do funeral and obit lookups for people who had relatives who died in multnomah county, Or and cannot get out her to check themselves. I check old newspapers for obit and funeral notice out here so this keeps me busy most of the time.
I could not find James L Nicholas after 1910 unless the spelling was wrong like i mentioned, somes the census taker would go by J.L. instead of name so you have to look for both.
Kristeen Galloway

Good Morning- Did get to see the census sheet on J.L. Nichols with wife Lillie, but could not see what census you got this from. this J.L. IS from Alligator i saw that part. But i see a Charley Nichols on 1910 census, born in Italy,20 yrs. old.(head) with no family. white male, beat 3 alligator also. Then James L. Nicholas with wife Lona J. beat 3 Alligator. I'm now beginning to wonder are these 3 people the same person if not it's a connection somewhere. The are all in the same town. Now i will be talking with the people at the library in Clarksdale about obituraries. Again need to know what yr. census you got J.L. from i still can't fine him. Or are you saying J.L. is James L.? Thanks, and goodnite. pijowal2

Hi Kristeen- I'm so delighted, and thank you so much, i think you got the right imfor. James L. Nicholas was my father's father, and my grandfather. I do not have a membership to ancestry.com yet. His son that died as adult was younger or older than my dad. These two sons had different mothers. My dad was born in 1912 and deceased in 1984. I work a second shief this is why i'm posting you so late. my other three surnames in Bolivar Co. are the Samuels, Reds, and Yates. in Tippah Co. with the Braddock surname i'm at a brick wall for now. and Coahoma Co. is tired in with all these surnames. Clarksdale, Ms. coahoma Co. is my home. I was born in Bolivar Co. at Shelby, Ms. Telling you all this since you said you have kin connections in Bolivar Co. I now live in Rankin Co. Ms. If you have the time look at the posts on the counties i listed to include Jefferson Co. too that's where the Reds and Yates starting out first and then they starting moving up to the Ms. delta. Think the first County they moved to was Washington Co. The Braddock kin was the only one that moved Tippah Co. to Coahoma Co. and back to Tippah. "whew" What i'm asking is what you think. You are so far from me in miles, but yet so close because of family ties that bind. I think i have posts on seven or eight counties in the state, but i never get replies from anyone in the state. that's why vi sent that post to "debbiemleltwi" she works the Bolivar Co. board i think as coordinator. Blessings to you. Rose Pleasent.

I found a James L Nicholas on the SSDI that says Sept 1964 place of death EUROPE. If he was a DR this is probbly him and that is why you could not find him on the MS death ndex he was probably on vacation and died of a heart atack or something.
Since it was not in the US it does not give exct date of death but if he lived in Alligator all his life there probably was a news article telling about him dying in the local paper. Most newspapers have an index of deaths in them. You could try contacting the paper that covers alligator and ask them to serch there archives for
September of 1964 for a James L Nicholas. his body may have been sent back to the US, he maybe buried in Alligator or close by, who nows. He would have been about 77 years old.
I do not live in MS. I live in Portlnad, Or but have great great grat cousins that used to live in Bolivar, MS.
So i search the boards sometimes.
kristeen Galloway

They then built a newer school north of Highway 8, just west of Cleveland.

In the recent past, a group has used it during Halloween as a Haunted House but I don't know that it was used this year.
Debbiemleftwi- When you have the time can you look at the 1920 census there is a husband and wife there they are James l. Nicholas and wife's name looks to be Lona J. I think they deceased sometimes in the late 50's or early 60's can't fine them on the death indexs. The husband was one of the doctors in alligator,Ms. in the 20',30', and 40's he was my doctor starting in 1948 when i was born until 1958 when we moved to Clarksdale. This couple had an only child i was told a son who drowned in a boating accident on the old Ms. river. So now there's no family left in Alligator. They are one of the surnames in my family tree. On a previous post i think i saw where you gave a family the web site for Wintonville, ms. i tried to fine on for Alligator but i couldn't. If anyone out there has infor. on this family or where they went. i would be so thankful. Thanks.

Thank you for checking. Pratt & B. E. McMullen were not on the listing I saw, so it evidently predated 1947. I was hoping W.D.'s wife, Georgia Hawkins McCullough (Clara Mai McMullen's mother), was buried beside her husband. I last found her living in NJ in 1930 with her son. She apparently died and was buried there. She was my g-g-grandmother's sister.

A search of the 1900 census uncovered Dawson Taylor, (b1858) a Texas head of household who’s vital information matched that of Dawson Taylor, the son of Mariah Taylor. Originally from Madison, Georgia (see 1870 census) he, and younger brother Daniel (b1860) opted out of Georgia for unknown reasons, relocating to Harrison county Texas, and Bolivar county Mississippi respectfully. Daniel, and his wife Emma were positively identified via Morgan county Georgia marriage records.

It is my endeavor to reconnect the family ties that were severed when distance became a factor in keeping our family communications lines open. If you are related to or know of someone who is related to Dawson or Daniel Taylor, I would love to hear from you.

Are You A Descendant of DANIEL & EMMA TAYLOR / African-American

Daniel, and wife Emma relocated to Bolivar, MS around 1900. Due to the unavailability of the 1890 census the approximate time of their departure from Madison, Georgia can't be determined. Married on Jan 15, 1880 if not already parents they most likely began a family within months. It is unknown if their independent older unidentified children if any relocated with them. Daniel, a.k.a. Dan passed at the age of 59, in 1922. I was able to determine via his recently acquired death certificate that Gunnison, MS is where he and his family resided. It also identified apparent relative Bill Taylor as the informant.

A search of the Private Eye web-site, http://privateeye.com identified 25 individuals with the Taylor surname as current residents of Gunnison. Are you one of them. Please, talk to older family members to determine if your lineage is rooted in Georgia.

Morgan of Prentiss, bolivar County, MS

On the 1860 census for Bolivar County, MS are 3 pages which give Prentiss as the Post Office. From other sources, Prentiss was supposed to be a fairly large, for the time, town until its destruction by Sherman. So why only 3 pages listed with post office at Prentiss? I do note that the occupation for most on those 3 pages do indicate that they live in a town - blacksmith, physician, lawyer, carpenter, etc. My interest is a Step(h)en Morgan born in KY who is listed with no occupation living with Hiram Watson (They evidently ran a boarding house or hotel). My grandmother said he (her grandfather)told her he was an overseer on a plantation in Mississippi before the War. I know he went on to enlist in 1863 in "northern Mississippi" in the 12 KY Cavalry, CSA. After the war he lived in TN and was a preacher for the ME Church, South. I am at a loss trying to obtain pre Civil War info on this my great great grandfather. Thanks for any help or direction you may give me.

McCullough, b 1-21-1860 d 3-1--1917, notation on stone "At Rest"

Pratt McMullen, b 6-5-1875 d 12-10-1955, notation on stone "Father"

B. E. McMullen, b 5-12-09 d 2-21-47, notation on stone "Pat"

Clara Mai McMullen, b1890 d 1933, notation on stone "Mother"

They are buried in Block 35, plots 6, 8, 9, and 10, respectively. They are located in the middle front of the cemetery, a few yards off Hwy 32. There is a notation in the cemetery book that A. M. McMullen, Meridian, is the heir to the remaining plots. Also buried in this block is Hugh Buckley Rose and Julia Murphree Rose. I believe Julia was previosly married to a McMullen.

I am looking for information on Theodore E. Perry. He was
born in Tennessee in 1890. It is believed he died in 1943
in Bolivar County. Can anyone tell me for sure when he died?
He was married to Clyde Beck between 1911 and 1917.
Where is he buried? He appears on the 1920 and 1930
census in Bolivar county with Clyde and their daughter.
He went by Theo. Any information would be appreciated.
You can reach me at jeansigman@msn.com
Thank you.
