I see that you are researching many from Stod, Norway. Quite a few emigrants from there ended up in Pope County, including those from the Oxaas farm. Rebæka Pedersdatter Oxaas emigrated and married Nils B Wollan (Nels), Her sister Martha Bendichte Pedersdatter Oxaas married Jens Finstad and their oldest daughter emigrated and married Raphael Svendsen (Swenson), also from Stod. Raphael's brother Peter Magnus also emigrated from Stod. Most emigrated from that area mid-1880s, it seems. Church records from the Stod area recorded when a member emigrated and to where. Let me know if I can help with any specifics.
Kari Gunvaldson Swanson, kgunvald@gmail.com

Nels (Nils) B Wollan is my 2nd great grand uncle via his wife Rebæka. His wife's father emigrated with my second great grandmother. I also grew up around Starbuck. I would love any further information on this line, thanks. Please reply to kgunvald@gmail.com.
Kari Gunvaldson Swanson

Hi Kristy,

John Arndt Hanson was my grandfather's brother. We used to visit John Arndt and Clara when I was a teenager. The birthday I have for her is July 5, 1891. My father who recently past away may have a record of when she died. Our family is in the process of sorting through family documents and information. If I come across other information I will let you know.

Jerrold Hanson, son of Earl R Hanson.
Earl was the son of Harry T Hanson (brother of John Arndt Hanson)

MORE ABOUT Vernon's father CLYDE F WILSON

A Clyde F Wilson died in 1945 in St Louis, County (source: Minnesota Historical Society/MnHS death index). His siblings might also have photos of Vernon. His parents names should be on the death certificate, which you could order from MnHS.

This might be Clyde in 1910:
1910
Hennepin County, Minnesota
George Wilson 53 b Sweden
Carrie Wilson 55 b Norway
Joseph M Sampson 23
Fulton C Sampton 18
Mearel Wilson 18
Clyde Wilson 14 born about 1896 in Wisconsin
Minnie Wilson 11
Georgie Wilson 21
Nina Wilson 11

I think this might be George and Carrie,
LINK:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=29...

FIND A GRAVE memorial
George Alfred Wilson
Birth: Apr. 10, 1858, Sweden
Death: Apr. 13, 1938, USA
Burial: Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota.

The creators of Find a Grave memorials are not usually family members. However, in this case, I think the creator of this memorial is likely a family member,
LINK:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=mr&MRid=46...

The name of the Find a Grave creator is the same as the woman who posted this message on a Swedish ancestry message board:

"My gggrandfather George Alfred Wilson listed his birth place as Amdsvail, Sweden, on some records and Stockholm, Sweden, on others. He was born 10 April 1858 and most US Census records say he immigrated around 1880....He immigrated in 1878 and when he married in 1881, listing a father J. O. Wilson on his marriage application. He listed no mother. His death certificate had unknown in the parental blocks and the obituary did not list any family. His granddaughter says he never spoke of family that she knew of. He worked in North West Michigan when he first immigrated and settled in Emerald, Wisconsin, and then moved to Minneapolis where he died in 1938."

LINK:
http://aforum.genealogi.se/discus/messages/2450/108463.html

Attached is a photo of George Alfred Wilson (1858-1938) that is posted on a public member tree on Ancestry.com (many thanks to the creator of the tree).

At this point, this is part of your family history but I have no knowledge of how she is connected to your line, or whether she would have photos of Vernon.

It is quite interesting that the surname Wilson apparently may originate in SWEDEN! :D

In another thread on the Swedish site, the researchers theorize that the following man (John Alfred Aaslund) could be George Alfred Wilson. "A Johan Alfred Åslund from Skön parish just outside Sundsvall emigrated to Quebec 14 Sept 1879. He was born 10 April 1858, according to the CD Emibas. He left Malmö harbour on 19 Sept 1879. This could possibly be your ancestor who has changed his surname, Wilson not being a Swedish name. Johan is a Swedish version of George or John. Prior to emigration he was a farmhand at a farm in the village of Tunabäck."

The following family tree on Ancestry.com says George Alfred Wilson was first married to Ida Jane Tuttle (1864 - 1900), daughter of William S Tuttle and Hannah Brown. Ida died in Emerald, St Croix County, Wisconsin in 1900. Therefore she would be the mother of Clyde Fulton Wilson born 1896 in Wisconsin (not Carrie in the 1910 census). I have NOT verified this information! The link below includes a delightful portrait of Ida Jane Tuttle. So far that's a lot of photos but none of Vernon.
LINK:
http://records.ancestry.com/Ida_Jane_Tuttle_records.ashx?pid...

And here is a family tree for Ida Jane Tuttle that says she was
born 03 Jan 1864 in Wrightstown, Brown, Wisconsin
died 07 April 1900 in Emerald, St Croix, Wisconsin.

The 1900 US census was taken on 01 June 1900.

http://www.familycentral.net/index/family.cfm?ref1=38296:31&...

This is possibly Clyde's sister Minnie (from MOMS and from MnHS Death Index):

MARRIAGE
MINNIE WILSON marries GUSTOV HELMER ANDERSON
11 April 1912 in St Louis County, Minnesota

DEATH
ANDERSON, MINNIA W
Date of Birth: 23 NOV 1898
Place of Birth: OUT OF STATE
Mother Maiden Name: TUTTLE
CERTID# 1987-MN-034632
Date of Death: 24 DEC 1987
County of Death: RAMSEY

Well, this is never-ending...

Hope this helps track down living family WITH photos!

MORE ABOUT Vernon Carlyle Wilson

(You may already have the info I'm posting - still helps to post, since it may draw cousins to this thread, okay?)

Find a Grave Memorial
Vernon Carlyle Wilson
Birth: Jul. 13, 1921
Death: Nov. 13, 2005
Inscription:
PVT US ARMY WORLD WAR II
Burial: Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota

OBITUARY
November 15, 2005
Duluth News Tribune
Vernon Carlyle Wilson, 84, lifelong resident of the Duluth - Proctor area, passed away Nov. 13, 2005, at St. Mary's Medical Center. He was born July 13, 1921, in Duluth, to Clyde and Alice Wilson. Vernon was a 1938 graduate of Denfeld High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1943, as a Combat Engineer. Vernon was a strong, supporter of the Disabled American Veterans Association and an active member of American Legion Post 71. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his daughter, Barbara Olson. Vernon is survived by his wife, Alma; son, W. Duane (Karen) Wilson; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Interment will be at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.

* * * * * * * *

Obviously at this point we have a discrepancy with the death date and place you name - so maybe the Vernon born in Duluth is not your Vernon? However, this previous post (link below) suggests it may just be a confusion about the death,
LINK:
http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.wilson/14134/mb.ashx

In the last six-seven years a lot of information has been posted online that was not previously available. Probably the earlier post had no answer because no one found the needed info.

Their obituaries may mention Bertha. She may be living near one of them after 1920. She may be buried in the same cemetery (even if people far away, sometimes they have a family burial plot). If Bertha and Fred divorced and she remarried, her parents' names can help us id her.

===========================================================
This Find a Grave memorial serves as a good introduction to the family and helps orient those trying to help search. Could be used in opening queries re. this clan. (I suspect you are the creator). Bertha L. was living with he Uncle Ernest Lunt in MN per 1930 census. Ernest married his wife Gladys 1920-21.And Bertha living with them and i think she was 15 at the time. I really dont think she was the Dozors daughter but that what they believe. I can not reach them anymore. When i get back on the 27th im going to call the cemetery and see if i can find a obit. Thank u

Okay, thanks.

You notice there is no child with Fred and Bertha in 1920.

I see on Ancestry.com a family tree with
Bertha Lovella Lunt
Birth: 16 Dec 1915
Marriage: 28 Aug 1934 - Pine City, Minnesota
Death: 3 Mar 1938 - Wausau, Wisconsin

1930 there's a Bertha Lunt b 1915 living in Marathon, Wisconsin.

Trying to verify the family tree on Ancestry.com, I searched for Bertha Dozors or Lunt in the Minnesota Birth Index (Minnesota Historical Society). She is not listed. I searched for Bertha born 1915 in Minnesota; got 112 hits. I looked at each Bertha and there is no Bertha with a last name Dozors or Lunt misspelled. Only the following Bertha is born 15 December 1915 in Minnesota:

MELLIN, BERTHA L
Date of Birth: 16 DEC 1915
Mother Maiden Name: LERNT
Minnesota Birth Certificate# 1915-48993
County of Birth: HENNEPIN

So...are you sure Bertha and Fred had a daughter in 1915?

????

Sorry everything u found did match with what i found on her.Her parents were James Albert and Mary Roberts Lunt and they are buried in the Lakewood Cemetery in MN. Im going to give them a call but heading to CT. for a week. Im going to call when i get back. I know she was born 5/13/1887 MN. and she married Fred Dozors. I could not even find them in the 1920 census till u found them. The only other thing i heard from desendent of hers was Bertha and Fred had a daughter Bertha Lovella Lunt b.12/16/1915 MN and d.3/3/1939 WI. that was sent to live with her Uncle Ernest Lunt when Bertha Dozors died. I saw Bertha L. living with Ernest in the 1930 Cencus and going by the last name Lunt instead of Dozors. The person that sent me that info had no idea way either. Ive never seen anything about Fred and Bertha having a child. Ive tried to get ahold of her desendent agian with no luck. Ive never research Bertha Lovella but know she married a Roman Wunsch and they had two daughters Phyllis and Pat. After i call Lakewood cemetery in MN i may try to find a obit for Bertha Wunsch that might clear some things up. Thanks again

According to the Minnesota Death Index it looks like Arthur Berg died Sept 28, 1967. You also have the death dates of Alyce and Vincent. I would suggest you post a request for their obituaries on the Pennington Co. site, or contact the library which appears to have an index of obituaries:

http://nwrlib.org/thief-river-falls/

The obituary for their son also lists 2 cousins as survivors. You might want to try and locate them and see what information they may have.

Lastly, if you send for their deaths certificates they often have an informant for the information listed and very often that is a family member.

Good luck

Who are the parents of the children you listed? Alyce and Vincent were not married under 1929. Do you mean the parents of Alyce had Gladys, Elmer and Gertrude? If so, you will need to post what you know about the parents so people know where to look

! So may we call her Goro Bergersdatter Taarnebye!
The USA records for Julius b 1846 and Selmer b 1861 fit beautifully with the 1865 census in Norway that barbdale posted.

Lovely work, everyone.

As barbdale pointed out, Family Search includes birth and baptismal records for the family. FS lists 30 May 1849 as Goro's birth date. Goro's tombstone says she was born 30 May 1848. Oftentimes this one year difference occurs - very common. This proves barbdale has found the right family in Norway.

Find a Grave memorial:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=27...

Below is a link to a wonderful website with which you are likely familiar with a genealogy for the family of Paul Gjermunsen Ostby (8/12/1836-1917) and portraits of both Paul and Guro. It seems he was a teacher at her hometown of Vaalor, in Solor, prior to emigrating. The Gjertrude who immigrated with Paul and Guro is likely his sister. I was looking for more information about Guro and her siblings, but no more is said of her here, than that she married Paul, bore him nine children and died 1908.
LINK:
http://www.eloptac.com/ostby/ostby.htm

Another Find a Grave correction that can now be made is to this statement: "Paul and Guro were both immigrants from Norway, having arrived as young people and meeting in Minnesota." Probably this idea comes to descendants because this couple married in Minnesota. Instead, I suspect they met while he was teaching in Vaaler.

Family Search Lists these Norwegian Birth Records for Goro and siblings:

Julius Bergersen born 02 Dec 1846, baptised 27 December, in Hof, Hedmark, Norway

Goro Bergersen born 30 May 1849 baptized 17 June 1849 in Vaaler, Hedmark, Norway.

Anne Marie Bergersen born 15 March 1852, baptized 09 April 1852 in Vaaler, Hedmark, Norway

Juline Bergersen born 15 May 1854, baptized 11 June in Vaaler, Hedmark, Norway

Marthea Bergersen born 16 July 1856 baptized 17 August in Vaaler, Hedmark, Norway

Bernt Bergersen born 12 Dec 1858, baptissed 02 Dec 1859 in Vaaler, Hedmark, Norway

Selmer Bergersen born 05 April 1861, baptized 28 April in Vaaler, Hedmark, Norway

Johannes Bergersen born 20 Nov 1863 baptized 06 December in Vaaler, Hedmark, Norway

The siblings in that 1865 census posted earlier:
Julius Bergerson, age 20
Goro Bergersdatter, age 17
Ann Marie Bergersdatter, age 14
Julene Bergersdatter, age 12
Martea Bergersdatter, age 10
Bernt Bergerson, age 8
Selmer Bergerson, age 5
Johannes Bergerson, age 3

1875 Census
Taarneby, Våler, Hedmark
Berger Iversen 55 birthplace Vaaler
Johanne Olsdatter 46 Vaaler
Anne Marie Bergersdatter 23 Vaaler
Juline Bergersdatter 21 Vaaler
Marthea Bergersdatter 19 Vaaler
Bernt Bergersen	17 Vaaler
Selmer Bergersen 14 Vaaler
Johannes Bergersen 12 Vaaler

"Bernhard" is probably an Anglicization of Berger.
Berger may have been known by his "farm name" even in Norway, it helped to keep people separate when there were multiple similar names. Also, if the person was a tennant farmer, their "last" name may have changed when they moved to a different farm.

Here is the birth for Goro in the church books, it is actually the date of her baptism, May 30, 1849. Her father is listed as Berger Iverson of Taarnebye and ? (can't read the second part)
She is number 60 on the page. The names in the column to the right of her parents are the sponsors, which were most often relatives.
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?show=6&uid=243718&...

Wow, thank you both so much! You know, I should've considered that Thornby was their "American" last name - Ostby was an American last name adopted by my Paul Gjermundsen, and it makes sense that Guro and Annie Mary adopted Americanized names as well. Thank you so much for your help. This really helps me on my way to answers.

This may be your family in the 1865 Norwegian census in Vaaler, Hedmark Fylke (a Fylke is kind of like a county), with parents Berger Iverson and Johanna Olsdatter.
Annie Thornby c1855-1923 - experienced genealogists please help!

I have a little mystery in my family's burial plot in Minneapolis, MN. Specifically, a woman who is buried near my great-great-grandpa Bernhard Ostby, and his son Earl Ostby and daughter-in-law Lucille Ostby. (She was a cousin and Ostby is her maiden name as well as married name.)

According to the Lakewood cemetery website, these are the only 4 people in this section of the cemetery, and there is a monument to either Ostby or Thornby (a "graver" will be heading out soon on my behalf to confirm which name is on the monument - I live several hundred miles away).

It seems apparent that this Annie Mary Thornby was related to my family somehow. The cemetery records indicate she was born about 1855, and died on 24 Apr 1923. Unfortunately that's about all they indicate. I don't know if Thornby was her married name, if she was a spinster, how she knew the Ostbys. The catch here is that the mother of my g-g-grandpa Bernhard (the man she's buried beside) was a Thornby - her name was Guro and she was born in 1848. She is buried in another cemetery. Is it possible that Annie Mary was Guro's sister? The age range seems right. Guro was born in Vaaler, Norway and moved to Minnesota as a young woman. However I can find no records of Guro in her youth to see if Annie Mary was her sister.

All this is to say I want to know who Annie Mary Thornby is. Without knowing if Thornby is her married name, I'm kind of stymied. Bernhard was divorced and it's possible she was his second wife, but if so, why would she be buried under her maiden/first husband's name? Anyone with fresh ideas please help!
