I have in my possession an obituary scrapbook of my Gr. Grandmother Ella Emelia Groh, daughter of Ignatz Groh and Joannah Blaschka. Ignatz was born in Bohemia in 1846 and came to the US circa 1868. In this scrapbook are several Groh/Hondl obits. One is Anna Groh passing away at her brother Anton's home. She was bown 12/21/1863 with brothers of Frank, Joe, a sister, Mr. Frank Ren?? and family still in Europe. I think there is a connection with my family and yours In yet another obituary attending Ignatz's funeral is Mrs. J. Groh of a Milwaukee connection. I think there is a connection with your family and mine. Please reply here and to nwashington@charter.net

hi, Ellen,
Any hints would be helpful, but I feel hopeful about the Wells possibility. There were not many newspapers in the 1880s, but I was looking at Wells yesterday for myself, and discovered some...am not sure how early they started, as I was looking at about 1900, but they had a good-sized town earlier than that, so hopefully the newspaper started publishing, too. Waseca also had early newspapers, and the publishers generally had lots of local news tidbits. Mankato, not so much - more state and national news there. Minnesota Lake didn't have a newspaper early enough. So it's hit and miss, but we may get lucky with Wells.
Cross your fingers!
Laurie

Thanks so much again, I live in Sioux Falls, SD, so this area is hundred miles and more from me, so I really appreciate whatever you can do,and thank you so much.
I wonder if it would help if I put a query on the Blue Earth, Waseca, or Faribault counties mailing list?
There are some Sonnek relatives--that I do not know- who live by Wells, I believe, but I think they were more from the Kluender/Zuse side.(Ludwig SR and Henriette's daughter-in-law.) Maybe I will do some phone calls this weekend, sounds like from the weather, no one will do much traveling.
thanks so much, Ellen ewhite38@hotmail.com

I am sure that L. and A. Plageman would refer to Ludwig and Henriette's oldest sons. Ludwig Jr. and August. One had a blacksmith shop and the other a Saloon? in the 1880 census in Minnesota Lake.

Would Wells, MN have a newspaper?
I found the date for Henriette's death (12-28-1888)from the Mankato courthouse, while I was looking for a refernce--- I seem to remember that came from a Waseca newspaper in Jan of 1889,--- that said the mother of L. Plageman of this town gad died. also Louis Plageman jr. worked for the railroad at sometime and lived in Waseca.

I wonder if August Plageman was living in the house and had his blacksmith business close by that could have belong to his brother Louis???

Many thanks again, for searching for the death in the newspaper.
Ellen
Plageman's blacksmith shop, at Minnesota Lake, burned Wednesday at 10:30 p.m. Cause of fire, defective chimney. Loss about $1,200; insurance on dwelling, $600.

In my book of research notes: I just note a note to myself that "Bernie" was a son of Ben, born 1904, so likely the Bernie who graduated in 1968 would be that Bernie's son. Back in 1992 or so, I received a phone call from a "Bernie" Plageman. but I wasn't home, so just a message on the phone.

I don't have records of any of the later generations of Herman and Emma Plageman's grandchildren or even great grandchild as Bernie if graduated in 1968 would be.

The boys of Emma and Herman Plageman would be
Henrich or Herman born 1892
Basil born 1900
Harry born 1903
Ben born 1904
Berhart/Berhard born 1904/1905 (I don't know if the Berhart/Berhard were two separate children or same person, or could even be the Ben I have as born 1904, my information was 2nd-3rd hand )
The Bernie who graduated in 1968 could be a grandson of his)

One generation lived around a lake, I believe by Willmar, this was info from my father, now deceased.
Ellen

I received the death certificate of Henriette/a Plageman from a researcher. I have looked and looked for my copy, and yes, I can not find it, I am sure the death certificate from found at Mankato court house. It was dated toward the end of December, (I am sure, that is why a notice was found in the Jan. 1889 newspaper in Waseca co. but it did not give any information, other that the death.)

I am hopeful you can find some information in a newspaper. Henriette and husband Louis / Ludwig had a farm I believe in Danville twp. so maybe something would be in a Minnesota Lake , MN newspaper, if not one around the area or in Mankato.
Thanks so much for offering to check.
Ellen Plageman White

The Andreas map, 1874, is a little earlier than the 1879 that Donna used shows East Janesville. Kelley's 1874 marriages as recorded used Janesville and East Janesville for places where ceremonies took place so residents, at least, made some distinction, though by the time Andreas was published there were changes. If family homes for these two people could be located on these maps, they'd be a possible marriage location. Andreas map images are online.

Here is what Waseca County Landowners of Record, 1879, compiled by Donna Fostveit, has to say (noted that the excerpts are taken from Child's History of Waseca County and History of Steele & Waseca counties):Early records were lost and records of the county commissioners show the original township name in 1858 to be Okaman; in May of that year it was changed to Janesville. In 1854, a town plat was laid out; called Peopolis, it was the north half of the site of "Old Janesville" in section 28; no one bought land here. In 1856, another town was laid out in almost the same location (west half of section 28 on the shores of Lake Elysisan), called first st. Caesar's but changed to New Albany. When a new arrival puchased half of the interest, he renamed it Janesville after his location in Wisconsin. "Old Janesville" gradually disappeared as the presnt village of Janesville was platted and added to. East Janesville was platted in August 1869, and building began. In 1869 and 1870 all of Old Janesville was moved to East Janesville. (Looking at the plat map of 1879, one can surmise that East Janesville must have been in sections 33 and 34, which are SE of the lake, vs. Old Janesville, which was on the west shore. This is now all one town, and both parts in close proximity to one another.

I browsed a few pages of the marriage records and observe that - some individuals indicate their religious affiliation, others don't - most of the marriages do not indicate they were in a church & many name the homeowner where the marriage took place. Rev. B. F. Kelley performed marriages in Alma City, Janesville, and Elysian in addition to East Janesville at this time, so likely not in churches. Look for the 1874 Andreas Atlas - there may be an area noted as "East Janesville". The 1880 census shows a Benjamin F. Kelley in Janesville, age 47, born in New York, married to Charlotte, occupation "Free Babtist Clergeman" (spelling in census).

The first church building in Janesville was built by the Free Will Baptist Society in 1870 and used until 1896. (it has since been torn down) The first M.E. church in Janesville was not built until 1885. Roman Catholics in Janesville organized as early as 1854; they built their first church in 1876. (the current Catholic parish is called St. Ann's). [all of this info from Images of America: Waseca County, Minnesota] The phrase "a Minister of the Gospel" suggest the Baptists as a likely candidate. By the 1880s, there were Methodist, Catholic, Baptist, Lutheran and Episcopal congregations in Janesville.

My connection to this family is via Winifred Lang who married Mark L. Crain. My notes show Winifred being born 1832 in Co. Sligo Ireland to Thomas Lang and Ann Crystal. Winifred had 3 brothers: Patrick (married Kate Fallon) - Michael (married either a gal named Anna or Bridget) - Andrew (married Anna McLaughlin). She had one sister, Ann Lang who married Patrick Foley.
I am interested in Michael. Who was his wife and was he buried in St. Mary's or St. Peter's or St. Ann's. The information at www.dalbydata.com is confusing. If you go to this website, type Lang in the surname box and type the code San in the section box. Hope someone has a family tree to share?
Nyquist families in Janesville

John Nyquist family lived in Janesville, before moving to LeRay and Mankato. This family arrived around 1869-1873.

I found records for a Magnus and Karen (or Carrie) Nyquist, also of Janesville. They appeared to have arrived in the US around 1866.

Looking for evidence to tie these two families together.

I've indexed multiple deaths notices and an obit. w/photo for Hermann Marzahn + multiple death notices for Hulda Hess Marzahn. Hulda died significantly earlier than Hermann. These clippings are found in as many as 6 different German language newspapers published in Milwaukee.
For more information:
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
project originator/editor/compiler
"Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950)

We just asked for them when we were there.

Also you could make a trip to the Minnesota History Center Library where they have a room of many microfilmed newspapers.
