I am seeking information on Herman S. Smith, born mar 17, 1892 supposedly in Mpls, married Marie Blanche Reed Aug 1919 in Wadena County, and died Dec 1932 in Mpls. He is buried in Thomastown Covenant Cemetery, Wadena County, Row 9.

I wonder if there is an obit for him published in the local paper? His death record on mnhs.org doesn't list his mother's maiden name. His father was born in North Dakota and his mother in Norway according to census records.

Hello,

Have you received a reply? There is another way to handle your problem and that is to order and read microfilmed records of land deeds of Stearn and Wadena Counties. These are filmed by the LDS in Utah and can be obtained by ordering a loan through any Family History Center throughout the world at a fairly modest cost. I will be glad to give you tips on how to do this.

I am a volunteer looking for help on my own problems in Minnesota but like to be helpful to others when I can.

Rick Bergman

Will Pay for Wadena County Land Search - 1885-1895 & 1905-1910

Hello,

My great-great grandparents, Nicholas and Elizabeth (Koppes) Traufler (Luxembourg immigrants), lived in Stearns and Wadena counties from around 1866 to around 1910.

I'm looking for somebody (whom I would pay a reasonable fee) who can get to the courthouse land records in Stearns County to search for land transactions. The family moved from near Hancock, Houghton, Michigan between 1866 and 1870. The 1870 federal census shows them at St. Augusta Township, where they remained until at least 1885 when they are again listed in St. Augusta.

Therefore, they must have BOUGHT their St. Augusta farm from 1866-1870. [It is worth noting that Elizabeth declared her intention for naturalization (first papers) on 6 Apr 1876...perhaps there are land records in her name, as well as husband Nick's name.] And they must have SOLD the St. Augusta farm from 1885-1895, as discussed next.

The 1890 federal census was destroyed...but by the 1895 state census they had moved to Aldrich, Wadena County, MN. In the 1900 federal census, they are with son Michael Traufler at Aldrich. Nicholas and Elizabeth were alone at Aldrich when the 1905 state census was conducted. By the 1910 federal census date, the Trauflers had moved to East Grand Forks to live with son Michael (and next door to their widowed daughter, my great-grandmother Elizabeth (Traufler) Mongoven.

Therefore, they must have BOUGHT the Aldrich property from 1885-1895, and SOLD it from 1905-1910.

I'm hoping that the person I hire to do this can get to Wadena County to check the land records there, too. I plan to place this announcement in the Wadena County message boards as well. The fairly narrow dates means the search should not take too long...of course, driving there in the Minnesota winter is another matter! Please let me know if you are interested.

Sincerely,
Jan

Don't limit your research to Wadena County. You should also be looking in Ottertail, Crow Wing, and N. Dakota, etc. Check papers in Brainerd, Fergus Falls, Verndale, Fargo, all surrounding areas, for possible obits.

My great-grandfather was born in Illinois, lived all his young life and mid-adult hood in Iowa, moved to Verndale, Wadena Co., Minnesota and adopted a child listed only as "Kansas", died in Fergus Falls, Ottertail Co., buried in Verndale, and the only obit was in Brainerd, Crow Wing Co., MN. Why? Because he had a grandson living in Crosby, Crow Wing Co.! No one says it has to make sense or be logical!!! Good luck.

Kate

Ann,
Hans and Henry are both buried in Hay Creek Cemetery just southwest of Sebeka in Ottertail County. There is also an Anna Elizabeth (22 Oct 1867 - 10 Jan 1943) buried there. I imagine she is Henry's wife.
Hans - 6 Aug 1891 - 20 Oct 1959
Henry - 26 Aug 1866 - 26 Sep 1947

You can go on Findagrave.com and register (it's free). The graves are listed there as well four more at Rauha Cemetery in St Louis County. If you join up, you can request a picture of the gravestone and some will go out and take the pic and post it on the site for you. This all free, we're all volunteers.

Hope this helps - Jim Childers

It looks like Loretta died in Puyallup, Pierce County, Washington in 1916. Perhaps she lived with one of her children? If you check the Washington Digital Archives here, you can find the index information. http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/Default.aspx
You can ask the Washington State Library to look for an obit, but it takes them awhile
http://www.sos.wa.gov/library/Genealogy.aspx
You can also go to random acts of genealogy kindness at www.raogk.org to look for a volunteer who will look for you.
I did not find a grave location, but I notice there are other Paddocks buried in Sumner, which is near Puyallup. Loretta could have had her body shipped back to Minnesota, it just depends if they had the money, or if she was buried in Washington.

Looking for any information on the Anttila's that lived in the Wadena County area early 1900s. My great grandfather would have been Eugene Anttila born abt 1910. I cannont figure out who his parents were or what happend to them. In the 1920 census it shows that he is living with his grandparents Gustaf A and Maria/Mary Anttila.

I am also looking for any information on his death.
