I have Maggie's wedding dress from 1893. The church of St. William is hosting a historical bridal show 5/5/2013 in Fridley, MN. Joseph C Schierts is my grandfather.

Maggie’s dress

There are 2 marriage license applications on file in Wabasha County in 1893. The first one is listed as Maggie in September, then in October Sarah Margaret Calvin and Bert Odell. So, this dress was probably worn in October 1893 in Wabasha County. Maggie and Bert were born in 1870, and were married at the age of 23. They lived in the tiny town of Kellogg and had 2 girls, Bess and Vera. Then, when the girls were still little, Bert passed away on the 4th of July, 1899 at the age of 29.

My grandfather Joseph Christopher Schierts was born in a log cabin in 1876. He worked in the lumber yard when Maggie was building her house. He went to North Dakota to homestead on the early 1900’s then [he told my mom] he got lonely and came back to marry Maggie in 1904. [He was 28 and she was 34] He helped raise her kids, then she got sick, and she passed away in 1928.

Joe stayed in the house in Kellogg, and in 1929 he married my grandmother Bernadette Elizabeth LeTourneau, who was 18 years younger, and she was the nurse who cared for Maggie. My mom had an older brother Joseph who lived for a day. Joan Elizabeth Schierts was born in 1933 when her dad was 56, and she is his only surviving miracle baby.

Joan’s dress

Joan married Edwin Joseph Johnston at St Felix in Wabasha, August 24, 1963, and her dress is here as well. I wore Joan’s dress during the Halloween Blizzard of 1991 when I [Elizabeth Jean Johnston] married Paul Herold: at Epiphany in Coon Rapids, 11/2/1991. Our son Ryan’s girlfriend, Elizabeth Cleary will model our dress [May 5, 2013].

Joan and Ed had 4 children from 1964 to 1968 Catherine Ann [m Joseph DeMartini] Susan Marie [m Gregory James Peterson] Mark Joseph [m Stephani Houk] and Elizabeth Jean [m Paul Herold]

Joseph Christopher Schierts now has 11 great grandchildren: Sarah Elizabeth & Matthew Thomas DeMartini,[VALENCIA, CALIFORNIA] Benjamin Joseph, Vincent Matthew and Taylor Elizabeth Peterson, [COON RAPIDS, MN] Callista Skye, Josey Linden Houk, Everett Mark, and Charles Joseph Johnston,[ROBBINSDALE, MN] Ryan Alexander & Jordan David Herold [FRIDLEY, MN].

I am very interested in Rev. Patrick B. Murray, I believe he is an Uncle of my Great Grandfather Franklin (Frank) B. Murray. Frank was the son of John Murray and a Chippewa Indian. I am having a difficult time with proof however. I need the connection to establish the line for further research in Ireland and just for my own pleasure. I do not believe John and the Chippewa were married or if they were the marriage was annulled. I know that Frank had an Uncle that was a priest, that he was a missionary to the Chippewa Indians, that he was at one time at the Cathedral in St.Paul and that he later was in the Wabasha area. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I am seeking information on Otto J. Lotz born Dec 16 1888 in Waldenburg, Schlesien, Germany), his wife Anna Haning (b. 1892 in Gratflug, Germany) and their 2 daughters Bertha (b. abt 1910 in either MN or Germany) and Marion Lotz (b. abt 1931 in Ithaca). There were also 2 sons Frederick Joseph and Herbert Otto - I have quite a bit of info on the sons, but not the daughters and no one seems to know what happended to the parents.
I find who I think is Anna widowed on the 1940 census working as a servant in Interlaken, NY. I also found who I think is their daugher Marion b. 1931 boarding in someone's home on Merchant St. also in Interlaken. If this is the correct Marion, I also found her on Ithaca city directories in the early 1950's but nothing after that. I know she was still alive in the early-mid 7o's somewhere in NY (her nephew was living in Maryland and they went up to visit her a couple times).
I've searched the Tomkins and Seneca counties genweb sites but found nothing more for any of the Lotz' of this family.
Marion could've married, and her mother Anna could've also remarried, no one seems to know.
I also found Otto's mother Agnes living with him on the 1910 census in Wabasha county. I have both their immigration records, and Agnes is buried in St. Louis County, MN (died in 1916). Agnes was widowed before she came to America in 1907, and she came over with a younger son Wilhelm. I suspect her maiden name was Rahmer/Ramer/Roemer as Otto on the passenger list for him in 1906 indicated he was going to his uncle Josef Rahmer in Wabasha, Minn.

My husband's maternal great-grandfather was Ernest Thierstein and although the surname does not seem to have survived here in Malta there are a lot of Maltese Thierstein descendants. For a start, my husband was one of fourteen children, most of whom married and are themselves grandparents. My husband's mother was Rosette(married Muscat)(1922-2011), daughter of Julietta(married Cassar), daughter of Ernesto. It appears that Julietta was the only sibling who married. Julietta had 5 children, 2 boys, Carmel and Ernest and 3 girls, Rosette, Frances and Teresa. The boys emigrated to Australia and one of the girls, Frances (b.1924), a spinster, survives Rosette and Teresa, who was also a spinster.

Barry -- Your name has come up in some of my previous searches, but I don't know that we have connected. John Karl Delva is my direct great-great grandfather (through Nicholas - then Francis Xavier). My mother (who passed away last year) was Francis' (Frank, Shorty) daughter, Laurel Fay Delva. I will admit that I haven't kept up on my research in the last year or two ... my Mom's death kind of drew me to a halt. Are you in Chewelah? I went up there several years ago, and saw the family homestead. Went to the museum; great lady there helped me out immensely, especially with news articles re: Veronica's passing & news articles. Hooked up with family still in Chattaroy (Fred Safford & family .... Marion Mertz's first marriage).

Barry, I would really like to talk/email/communicate with you regardin your research, and see the documentation you have discovered. Please email me directly at sunshynnn@gmail.com. Also, I am so interested in any information about Francix Xavier Delva. I understand he passed away while in jail in Ketchican, Alaska .... perhaps in the 'drunk tank' ... the rumor is that he was beaten, but I have been unable to find death records, or anything. I know it happened while my Mom (Laurel Fay Delva) was a freshman in HS; she received a Western Union telegram at the high school, because her name/address was the only information on him at the time. Perhaps 1960? But, I know that my grandmother 'forged' the year on her Birth Certificate so she could enter school a year early, so could go a year earlier. Anyways, please email me directly, as I would love to hear the stories, research, and any documents you can provide. Thank you so much for posting! If you are in Chewelah, I would love to make a trip to visit with you!

I am a descendent of John Karl Delva and recently was able to find the family records on the Belgium Civil Registry and the Colpach Catholic Parish records. Colpach is a very small place so it wasn't too hard to research the records. Jean Philipe, the father was born Philippe Karl Delva in 1804. None of the Belgium records lists him as Jean Philippe and on the Ship's Manifest and census records here he is listed as Philippe so I don't know where the Jean came from. He married Anna K. Flammang. I think the family in Minnesota got confused with Peter Delva's wife's last name. I found the marriage record and a cousin, Nick Flammang is buried here next to the John and Mary Delva in Chewelah, Washington. According to John Delva's obituary he never married and the Maria on the Ship's manifest would correspond to his sister Mary's age. I believe the Catherine listed on the passenger list must be his sister Mary Delva's daughter although she always used her maiden name and people thought she had never married. This is a big mystery and I haven't been able to find out what happened to Catherine. I visited the Delva family in Minnesota in 1995 and have a picture of Alex Strauss and also met a Prom.

I have copies of the documents from Belgium and photos of the Delva's that ended up in Washington and would be happy to share them, if you would like.
I also have stories about Peter Delva that his family in Minnesota shared with me.
If the Wilhelm Ludwig Prigge you mention is Reverent William
L. Prigge who married Minnie Lembke, I can be of some help
to you. First, there is considerable of the information you
desire that can be found by searches made on the ancestry.com site. Secondly, I can extend the lineages
some from my files for his parents, JOHANN PRIGGE (born
15 Jan 1827 in Wiegersen of Apensen Parish in the Hannover
Province of Old Prussia....and Catharina Maria Schlessel-
mann (born 20 Nov 1828 of Grosz Meckelsen of Grosz Meckel-
sen of Sittensen Parish of the same.

Write me!

Donald H. If you have any information on the Prigges that you are willing to share with me, I would be quite grateful. I know that I have gaps to fill in and probably some corrections to make on that part of my tree.

I would also be happy to share any information that I have with you, too, or help with any research as I do try to get to the MN History Center whenever my "to do" list gets long enough.

If this is OK with you, please message me and I will send you my contact info.
Hello,
I found this older post. I have been looking at the family of Thomas Newton Whitcomb. He was my ggg grandfather. He had two wives, Lucinda Davis who died in 1842 in Grafton Vermont, and Aljane. Thomas died in 1852 in Washington County in New York. So to answer your question, he never went to Minnesota. Thomas died intestate and I was able to find his Letter of Administration among NY State probate papers. Aljane was named adminstatrix of the estate. Thomas had three children with his first wife Lucinda, and two children with his second wife Aljane.

I would be interested in seeing any official documents that provide proof of the following:
Thomas Newton Whitcomb - date and place of birth, names of parents
Aljane - maiden name
Thomas and Aljane - date and place of marriage
Wilson West Whitcomb son of Thomas - date and place of birth

Also, I would be interested in seeing photos and sharing information about any members of the Thomas Newton Whitcomb family.

Thank you.
Karen

I noticed you posted this in 2000 so my reply may be a bit late. I have been researching the Larson family. My husband's great great grandfather was Andrew Larson. Some of the family is still located in the Mazeppa area. The children of Andrew Larson and Christina (Johnson) Larson were Ella, Lillian, Reed, Anna, Joseph, Elmer, Clara and Mabel. Joseph's descendents still live near Mazeppa. I also have found out the relation of the last names you've mentioned. Are you still hoping to find out this information?

I know that this is a huge longshot, but I have to try. I've been working on a tree that has strong ties to the Mazeppa, MN area. A distant relative sent me a family photo, but no one knows the identities of those in the photo. The only thing on the photo is the name "L.E. Scruby" and Mazeppa, MN. I've done enough research to know that Levi Scruby was a photographer in the 1890's. I'm looking for any way to track down the names of the people in the photo. I'm hoping, as someone related to the family, you may know (or know someone) who can help with this project.
I apprecitate your time and help. Thanks
Pete

I finally found an article, although the event was in February and it was not reported that Mr. Achenbach died:

The Winona Republican-Herald, Winona, Minnesota

February 26, 1930

William Achenbach, Mrs. Ellen Reese of Minneiska and Mrs. John Becker of Winona became seriously ill at the Achenbach home Friday evening as the result of eating pancakes containing arsenic of lead which had been mistaken for flour. Two physicians administered aid. All are recovering. Mrs. Reese was taken to St. Elizabeth's hospital Saturday and Mrs. Becker left for her home in Winona Sunday.

-------------------------

Beth
not related

I am looking for the obituary or a newspaper article about John William Achenbach. He also went by the name William Achenbach. He died on Mar. 01, 1930 in Weaver, Wabasha Co., Minnesota. The cause of death was arsenic in pancake.
I had his death certificate, but can't find it anymore.

The Wabasha Library has newspapers. Contact them, they have volunteers to do lookups. They also have a marriage index. http://www.wabasha.lib.mn.us/

Here is another site but I didn't see the marriage listed. http://www.mncounty.com/ Lauri

Newspaper Wedding Announcement 1868

I found two marriage records for Lewis P. Hudson and Sarah Kimball in the Minnesota Marriages 1849-1950 at FamilySearch.org. One says they were married in Olmstead county the other Wabasha? Trying to determine which location is correct. Since Lewis' parents, Aaron G. Hudson and Hannah Sutherland lived in Wabasha I would think that Wabasha is correct. The marriage date is the same 22 October 1868. Perhaps if I could find a newspaper wedding announcement that would determine the correct location and perhaps add the names of some guests. Hope someone has access to Wabasha newspaper info or a source....fingers crossed for some answers....thanks
