Thank you for your response to my posting. Thomas M. Gavin who married Anna Louise Heinz was my Great Granduncle. I have a lot of information on the Gavin side of the family only based on a copy of a family history prepared by Lucille (Preston) Lane which she called the "Saga of Charlie and Mame." I have no information on the children of Henrietta "Hetty" Pauline (Gavin) Norelius and her husband Walter Norelius and was hoping to gather names, dates of birth, etc. for them. I will be happy to share what information I have. Please contact me directly at rwjennings@roadrunner.com Hope to hear from you soon, Roger.

According to the Rock County History published in 1911, my great-grandfather (John Moerke) was a member of the German Lutheran Church. His farm was between Kanaranzi and Ellsworth in Kanaranzi Township. Someone suggested it may be the "State Line" Church, but I can't find any information about it. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Try emailing him. He lives in the county. And explain that you are back in Norway. If there was a list, I would think the Rock County Historical Society would have it.

http://people.mnhs.org/dci/
This might be him.
1924-MN-012693, NIELS OLSON, died 11 Feb 1924 in Rock County, Minnesota. Not sure if someone at a poor house would be able to get much of an obit in the local newspaper.

And I do not know if Gary can help you. He has indexed some cemeteries. Try looking through them.
http://genealogytrails.com/minn/rock/cemeteries_index.htm
Someone in a poor house might not have had anyone to buy a grave marker for him. There were a lot of farm foreclosures in the late 1910s. Same time Canada was offering free 160 acres of farm land because a lot of their men were in WWI.

Thank you for all your help.

I have done extensive research of the Kvaas family in Norway. I have traced all my relatives through the country, and am now working on the ones who came to America. I created a family tree of all my findings on http://grsfamily.tribalpages.com/. If you go to this website, you can contact me there to see the tree. Maybe I have some of your relatives in there. Basically, I have been using Ancestry.com as a tool to figure out where all of the Kvaas descendants and that is how I found Bernt and Tobias. I know Bernt's descendants are in Chicago according to another tree I found on Ancestry.com. I was tracing his lineage when I found Tobias in a census for Rock County. I figured it was too much of a coincidence that Tobias was living in the same area not to be family. And, that is why I wish to find out how he was related. Until now, I have not found Tobias in any Kvaas, Norway records or the farm book.

Melinda

Could you scan and email it to me?

I would love to find any information if Bernt and Tobias were related. I have been researching the Kvaas family ever since I found my connection to the farm in Norway. My great great grandfather Lars Quass (changed the spelling) lived in Iowa for about 10 years before his death, but broke off all ties with his former country and family, so we have been trying through the generations to reconnect.

Thanks,
Melinda

I grew up in Rock County, MN. I have done quite a bit of my Norskie genealogy .. some thru Mormon records & film. I remember Bernt Kvaas & his wife Karen Tofteland Kvaas. They are in my copy of "A History of Rock County from 1911 to 1976". Their daughter, Aagot, is very ill right now. I could try to ask a Kvaas lady if Bernt and Tobias were brothers.. I remember Tobias' wife from when I was young. I just got a 14-day trial on Ancestry.com. I live in Denver CO & I can help you if you wish. Joyce Tofteland Dean, j_t_dean@yahoo.com

Lulu was from Rice Lake and married a Frank Worden in either Aug or July, 1891 in Barron County, WI.
Do you have any information on place of his adoption and his birth parents?

I am doing a search for the descendants of John and Matilda Anderson Brandt. They were from Larchwood, Iowa around 1893. That being the year my grandmother(Ida Anderson Knipfer) was married. Matilda was my Grandmother's sister, who came to Iowa from Sweden. One of John and Matilda's son's moved to Rock County Minnesota. That being John Henry and his wife Ruth who both died there. I was hoping that their descendants would make a connection with this and have information dating back to John and Matilda Anderson Brandt. There was no information coming down from my Grandmother telling who or where her siblings were. Her obituary only mentioned a John Fingal Anderson whose descendants I have made contact with. Thank you for any help.

Thank you for the replys. I have seen the census, but did not have the death information. If anyone is a direct descendant of Perly GILLHAM, please contact me here. I thought that maybe Perly was a nickname for Austin, who I think may have gone by E A GILLHAM, but now I'm pretty sure they are 2 different people. In my grandmother's album is a photo labeled as Perley Gillham, that my Mom thought was Blanche's father, but actually would be her uncle if they were siblings...which seems odd because there is not a photo of Austin. Blanche's father is listed as EA Gillham on her marriage registration. Just trying to figure it out somehow :)

What records do you have for Austin GILLHAM? He should be listed with siblings in census records... Do you have access to census records?

I find Austin in 1880 Iowa, stating he was born about 1849 in Maryland with parents born in England.

I can't tell by the above whether this is the correct family in Wisconsin in 1860. Josiah GILLIAM [as transcribed], born IL, wife Elizabeth, born TN [that's how I read it]. Several children, including: Emily, Franklin, Isabel, Edwin, Austin age 12 born Wisconsin, Sophronia, Delia, Perley age 5 born Wisconsin, and Mary.

Here is the link to Minnesota births and deaths:

http://people.mnhs.org/dci/Search.cfm

Looking for information on Perley Gillham, I've found the bridge building articles, am looking for family stats...date of death, was he married etc. Also would like to know if he had siblings. My great great grandmother, Blanche Gillham b 1878- d 1930 lived in Luverne Minn for a short time, about 1895 according to the census, before her marriage to Joseph KAY in 1900. Her siblings were Guy and Clarence Gillham, parents Austin and Mary Jane EDDY Gillham. Would like to know if Austin and Perley were brothers. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried to get copies of their obituaries? I think that would be the first thing I would do. I don't find anything in online resources.

I don't find a lookup volunteer on the Rock County genweb site, nor on the RAOGK site (Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness), and don't live in Minnesota. Perhaps you can make a request on this board.

You should also check Ellis Island records. Emigrants needed to state who they were traveling to join in the U.S., and the relationship to that person. Records are here on Ancestry.com or on the Ellis Island website (free registration).

Beth
not related

I am looking for any information about the two Kvaas men in Rock county and anything about their families.

Bernt Larssen Kvaas (known as Ben in the United States) was born Nov 3, 1894 in Kvas, Lyndal, Vest-Agder, Norway. He was married to Karen Amelia Tofteland in 1920 on the Kvas farm and emmigrated to Chicago soon after. I found Ben living in Rock County, MN Unknown date to when they moved there but they do appear in the 1930 census. He died April 12, 1972 in the same county. I believe the family attended the Blue Mound Lutheran Church somewhere near Luverne?

Tobias O. Kvaas born May 26, 1891 and died May 21, 1958 in Rock County, as well.

I would like to know if there is a relationship between Tobias and Ben as Ben does not have a brother Tobias in Norway. It could be a cousin, though. But I find that many of them like to change their names when they obtain a citizenship in the United States.

Thank you in advance for all your work and effort.

It is so exciting to see that there are family members who are searching this line could we share information? My dad was born to Pedar & Hjordes Remme in Noway Bergen. Grandfather left and came back to the US to work I think for his brother John on his beet farm to bring my grandmother and dad to the US. Grandmother stayed to take care of her mother who was very ill and dying. I have a photo of their wedding on the farm. Could you contact me directly at: applesanoranges@comcast.net ? Thanks Sharon L Remme

On the Find A Grave website, there is a Paul Frederick Langbein Sr. I thought it might be a son of Frederick.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=la...;
So on the Minnesota death index,
http://people.mnhs.org/dci
Gives him a date of birth of 1921 so maybe he is now a grandson of Frederick Langbein. Paul's mother's maiden name is REILLY. Just an fyi on that. There really is not much out there on the surname. You really need to find him on a census record to narrow down the search for a deed. The courthouse staff needs to know where the land was located. Perhaps the local historical society has a 1900 county map or 1900 phone book.
The society is listed on this page.
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mnrock
They most likely charge a research fee.
Not finding anything online for Langbein in Rock County, Minnesota. Cool, this must be a German name.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langbeinite
http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=langbeinite&...
Anyway, the historical society has an email address on that rootweb.com website.

Was just curious where William Ross lived before moving to Vegreville, Alberta, CANADA in 1900. I have a Plat Book from Rock County published 1886 and although the Hulett's are shown, no William Ross is shown. Would have he been living with the Hulett's at that time? I am wondering how far back George Cole and William Ross knew one another?
George was born 1840 in Jefferson County, NY and then moved to Waushara County WI where he was married. I see from another posting in this thread that Arnold and Catherine moved to Minnesota from Oswego Co., NY. Was William in Wisconsin? What year was William born?

Ran across your posting when researching my Ross family connections. Blanche's sister's name was Grace. She was born around 1884 according to the 1900 Rock County MN census. Samuel Ross, the father of William Ross (Blanche & Grace's father) was my g-g-g-grandfather's brother.

http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/chs/osr/mardiv.html
Try neighboring counties.
Also check out birth certs for their children. I have dealt with courthouses where if you give them 1886 then they will not look at 1885 nor 1887. Especially if they have a very busy day. I have no experience with Rock county courthouse. I have had clerks go out of their way to help family historians.

There is also the possibility that the family diary is incorrect. Especially if a child was born before the wedding. I have three cases in my own family tree. If you can get an exact date then there should be a notice in the local newspapers about the marriage. My grandmother claimed to have married on the family farm. I later found out she eloped in the night with her sister for a double wedding out in South Dakota. I do not understand why that would be kept a secret.

I doubt the Remme/Remmen men you listed were related to Christopher Nelson Remme (1851-1930), originally from Vang, Valdres, Oppland County, Norway.

"Christ" was born to parents Nils Nilson (Øydgarden) Remme and Marit Nilsdatter Kvisl. (Nils Nilson was my 3rd great-grandfather's younger brother.)

Christopher immigrated to Goodhue County, MN in 1873, the same year his first child was born. Mother and child remained in Vang until they were reunited with Christopher in 1875. Christopher and Anne Olsdatter Holien (AKA Haali/Hålieigun) married July 8, 1875 at Holden Lutheran Church in rural Kenyon, Goodhue County. They had at least 12 children. (I know 2 died young)

Here is Christopher's June 29, 1851 baptismal record from Vang Kirke (Church). (Scroll down to #60):
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8999&i...

Good luck!
