Chuck and Elaine had nearly 30 wonderful years together, traveling and enjoying their children and grandchildren.

Chuck loved his horses and enjoyed trading horses, always saying that he was cutting back as he bought several more. He had two favorite dogs and a horse that were all named Blu.

Chuck had friends all over Minnesota and North and South Dakota. He had something in common with everyone and enjoyed having coffee and a cookie with friends.

He is survived by his children; Dennis Olson of Stacy, Greg (Melissa) Olson of Rush City; Nancy Swanson of Stacy, Linda Gorton of Los Angeles, CA Butch (Marya) Willert of Rush City, Patti (Tony) Anderson of Rush City and Mike (Wendy) Whittaker) Willert of Pine City; siblings; Dale (Gladys) Olson of Cambridge, LaDez Pangerl of Pine City, Ron (Jan) Olson of Livingston, Texas, Cliff (Ruth Merriman) Olson of Rock Creek; sister-in-law Sharon Olson of Rock Creek; 22 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Chuck is preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; parents, William and Jennie (Dahlstrom) Olson; brothers, Kenneth Olson and Harold Olson; sister-sin-law, Shirley Olson, Arlene Olson and Delores Olson; and brother-in-law, Bernard Pangerl.

I was just able to find an obituary on my grandmother, Lula Baldwin wife of Monroe Baldwin. The obit from a Virginia newspaper states that she at one time was a long time resident of Markville, Pine Co. MN and was one of the early pioneer women in MN. In the VA obit it says that "we learned from the "Markville Messenger" that she had died Oct. 8, 1930". Can anyone PLEASE help me in finding the obituary from the "Markville Messenger"? It would have been sometime soon after the 8th of Oct. 1930. I don't know how often that paper was published. I live in Virginia.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Ferch, Betty Jane (obituary 2009)

Betty Jane Ferch, 81, of Pine City fell asleep on Thursday Oct. 8, 2009 on earth and woke up in the presence of Christ early in the morning on Saturday, Oct. 10th.

She was born July 3, 1928 to Peggy (Clora) and Harold Bender in Elkhart, IN. She was married to Loren Richard Ferch on Sept. 19, 1946. During their early years together, while Loren was busy building houses, Betty was busy building a home. Above all else, Betty was a woman of faith.

She tried to weave into the lives of her children the values and principles of scripture, balancing the need for holiness with an understanding of God’s grave and love. Betty was a loving wife and mother. Her most favorite times were visiting with her children and grandchildren. They brought her much joy. She was faithful in praying for her children, and as time went on, praying for grandchildren, and then great grandchildren.

Betty was a gifted Bible teacher. She was involved in numerous Bible studies over the years, teaching young women, couples and teens. She had the gift of encouragement and hospitality, always making people feel welcomed and appreciated.

Betty was also tested with hardship along her way in life, cancer, loss of her first born daughter, brother, parents and other challenges that are part of life. The Apostle Paul’s words in Romans 12 would describe her well; “rejoicing in hope, preserving in tribulation, and devoted to prayer.” One of her favorite books in the Bible was Philippians. She found comfort in this letter of Paul’s. And while she had a number of favorite Bible passages and verses, her desire and prayer can be summed up in the verse she used in 3 John 1-4 “I have o greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.”

Some people are remembered by their closing signature on the cards and letters they write. Betty also used one, as well. In all of the many letters and card she sent out for birthdays, anniversaries and other occasions, she always singed them, “Love and prayers, Mom and Dad.” The apostle Paul said in his letter to he Corinthians, “You are a letter of Christ, cared for by us, written not on with ink, but with the spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human hearts.’ Whether creating needle work wall hangings for marriages and arrival of new babies, which she loved to do, or sending cards or notes, she was a letter from Christ to all who knew her.

Betty is survived by her beloved husband of 63 years, Loren R. Ferch; her children; Thomas (Gayle) Ferch, St. Paul, Loren (Ann) Ferch, Menahga, and Jeanne (Lonnie) Johnson, Pine City; 15 dearly loved grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Harold Bender and Peggy (Bender) Olufson; a brother, Robert Bender; and her daughter, Peggy Klippenes.

Funeral service was on Wed. Oct. 14 at the Pine City Ev. Free Church. Officiant was Betty’s son, Pastor Loren A. Ferch. Pallbearers were grandsons; Chris Ferch, Eric Ferch, Tim Ferch, Jon Klippenes, Nathan Johnson, Paul Johnson, Peter Johnson and David Johnson. Interment was at Hilltop Cemetery, Pine City.

Funeral arrangements were with the Swanson Funeral Chapel, Pine City.

Published in the Pine City Pioneer July 26, 1912)

Last Friday evening while storing a load of hay in the barn, Samuel Crawford fell backwards from the top of the load and broke his neck. Mr. Crawford was engaged in pulling out the big fork used in conveying the hay from the wagon to the mow. It is supposed that the rope he was pulling on was rotten or that the big fork became tangled in the rope, and in trying to extricate it, the strands of the smaller rope parted, sending the unfortunate man to his death.

Local physicians were called but before they arrived, death had reaped its harvest.

Samuel Crawford was born in Baragh, Torone County, Ireland in 1864, and at the time of his death was 48 years of age.

He came to this country when but a boy and has spent the largest part of his life in Minnesota. He was married to Miss Mary Boettger at St. Paul in June 1899 and six children were born of the union. From St. Paul Mr. Crawford and family went to Duluth, in which city they made their home for a number of years. In 1909 they moved to this place, purchased the property known as the Kenna farm south of here on the Brunswick road. It was on this farm that the sad accident occurred which cost him his life.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the German Lutheran church, Rev. Luebker, officiating. Interment was made in Birchwood cemetery.

The pallbearers were: Robert Greig, Wm. Daley, Chris Voss, A. Kalanda, Geo. Kick and H. W. Schultz.

Beside the immediate members of the family the deceased leaves a brother Robert of Duluth, a sister in Ireland and numerous friends to mourn his sudden death.

The deep sympathy of the entire community is tendered the bereaved family in this their hour of great sorry.
