I had a thought, Lena was getting pregnant every two to three years, all of the kids are two to three years apart, that would make her due for another kid around 1910-1911, she would have been 43 or 44. If she died during childbirth as I suspect how would one find a record? obviously they had to do something with her body. It's like she doesn't exsist after 1910. It's so puzzling that I cant seem to find anything about her.
Thats what I thought at first as well but from my searching of census records I found that the Lena Waldvogel living in duluth who was divorced, was married to a one August Waldvogel, her maiden name was Codwell if memory serves me. The Lena Waldvogel that married August Kawlewski dissapears from the records in between 1910 and 1930. so whatever happened to her happened before 1920 i believe. in the 1920 census it shows that her Children Henry and Paul were living with their brother, my great grandfather Otto in Ottertail, while Ida Gertrude and John were living with older sister Ella in Sauke Center. Im currently trying to track down a 1920 census that lists August or his son Charles or Lena for that matter. The mystery deepens as in 1930 August is listed as living with his son Charles in Vergus. He lists himself as a widower in 1930 and dies in 1938 and is buried in Vergas MN. If you are trying to trace back the Lena that was living in duluth im fairly certain that Codwell was her maiden name but i never wrote it down as she was not my ancestor, just a name coincidence. from my research i believe My ancestor Lena had a Father named Charles but he went by Carl or Karl and if memory serves there were quite a few records from the 1880s that list the other Lena, hope this helps and please let me know if you find out anything more, thanks.

My 3rd great grandfather on my dads sides name was August Kawlewski, or at least thats what it says on his death records, born may 3rd 1864 and died jan 2nd 1938, immigrated to the states not sure what year and became a citizen in 1891. He is buried in Wiemann's community cemetary in Vergas MN. Married Lena(lana, lina?)Waldvogel 1892 in chaska MN, They had children, Math, Otto, Ella, Henry, Charles, Paul, you get the idea. I've been researching this man heavily for the past few weeks and the two biggest facts I learned about him was A. he could not spell his last name, B. No one can agree upon where he was born... Not even him. In the 1930 census he lists his birthplace as Germany, he was 65 in 1930 and living with charles and Henry and a man named Fred Rhodes. Charles on that same census lists his fathers birthplace as Aus. Poland, Henry lists his fathers birthplace as Germany. I know from stories told by my grandparents Oscar and Lavonne Kawlewski and my father Terry that Otto Kawlewski would get very defensive and almost angry if anyone claimed that August was born in Germany. however in all of the records i have found August himself lists his birthplace as either Aus. Poland or Germany, he also prior to 1930 almost never spelled his last name the same. on his naturlization records it is spelled kawalewsky, he kept the y at the end for a while as far as i can tell. Here is the issue, I will never be able to track his line any further back unless i know what his last name was by birth, this could be any of the above spellings or even something that sounds like it such as Kalleske, if anyone else is researching this part of the family please get ahold of me, i have tons of records and would love to swap information. also a few years back i posted stuff on here about him that now i have no confidence in because i was unable to find the actual records. on another note if anyone knows what happened to his wife lena that would be great, all i found is that august lists himself as a widow in the 1930 census, i can find no grave records, no death records, no divorce records its like she simply stopped existing. please contact me if you have any information about these two

I think for now I would go with Kawlewski or Kalewsky. If you haven't already, it will help to get the actual marriage records. In the old German script, the S looked like an F. What is in indexes is what the transcriber read it as. So, it is not neccesarily true that August didn't know how to spell his name, it is how it was written.
You also have to remember that in Europe, countries changed hands during wars, so his birthplace could be listed differently depending on the year.
I would also recommend getting August's obit and see if it gives any clues, like surviving siblings. It may help to locate Lena if you get her brother Joseph Waldvogel's obit. Joseph died in Carver County , and there is an obit listed for him on July 15, 1915. The page tells how to order a copy
http://www.carvercountyhistoricalsociety.org/newspaper/searc...

You might try putting an obit request for August on the Otter Tail message board here
http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.min...

This lists his parents names, I don't know if you have the actual death certificate. It also says he is married, not widowed, and yet the 1930 census says he is widowed.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FDWR-D2G

I see that there are at least two different spellings at familysearch for his marriage, that is because different transcribers read it differently.

Am looking for her death in the year 1888 or 1893. I have searched Oak Hill and Fairview Cemeteries in Deer Creek and for a death record at the court house in Fergus Falls and in Wadena, but cannot find one. She was born in Germany in 1845 and was married to Henry Kruger in 1871 in Watonwan Co. She is in the 1875 and 1885 census in Deer Creek Twp. Henry Kruger remarried after 1893 so know that she died. Her name may be listed as Dora, Dorthea, or Theodora.

Re: Lutheran Church

I only today discovered your message of ten years ago. I have some information, including the church address, regarding Anna Hafstrom's husband, Edwin Ertsgaard of Fergus Falls, MN. This is some of what I have and believe to be accurate.

Edwin's father, Bjorn, was the brother-in-law of my great grandfather, Ole Huseby. Thus Edwin was a nephew of my great-grandmother, Beret Ertsgaard Huseby, who was Bjorn Ertsgaard's sister. Both the Ertsgaard and Huseby families emigrated from Stjordal, Nord Trondelag, Norway (near Trondheim). Bjorn left in 1866 and settled first in Goodhue Co, MN. Beret and Ole followed in 1869. In 1871 they all traveled by ox cart to Ottertail County near Fergus Falls, MN. I have more details of their journey and the names of other relatives making the trip.

Edwin, the oldest of three sons, was born on 10/5/1877. He married Anna C. Hafstrom (b.1880) in Minneapolis (date unknown). There were no children. Edwin is listed in an early census as a bank cashier in Grant Co. and by 1920 was a merchant in Minneapolis.

My great grandfather (and most likely Bjorn Ertsgaard) was a founding member of First English Lutheran Church of Fergus Falls (current name is First Lutheran Church.) The original church was destroyed by a cyclone in 1919 and rebuilt at its current location 402 S Court St., Fergus Falls, MN 56537.

Edwin's two brothers were:

Joseph (7/6/1881- 9/25/1940 in Minneapolis.) Married Louise M. Olson. 2 children. Printer in Minneapolis.

Marvin (6/14/1888- 1/25/1957) Married Mabel G.in 1925 (This was Mabel’s second marriage. She had a son, William C. Hildebrand, born 1909, with her first husband.) The family had a poultry farm in Dakota County, MN.

I would be interested in further information you may have, especially regarding Ertsgaard. It was an important family name in Norwegian history.

Thomas Huseby
Sarasota, FL 34236
thuseby@verizon.net

Ezra Orcutt was my gg grandfather. His daughter Fannie was my great grandmother. I don't have any record of him being in Fergus Falls. Most of his children were born in Iowa between 1865 and 1878. His next child was born in Nebraska in 1879, and his last child, my great grandmother, in 1883 in South Dakota. He married again in either 1895 or 1898 in Snohomish county, Washington, and died there in 1900. Hope this helps. Would love to see the obit if possible.

Thanks for the response. My my Grandmother was Ruth Zimmerman Nelson a sister to Ruby as you mentioned. Ruth died in childbirth when my father was three. I had often wondered why there was little communication.

Who was your Grandfather? Would like to know more about the family.

Thanks,

Larrie

Hello, this David and Martha Zimmerman are my great-grandparents. All I can tell you is that from what I know and remember, perhaps my Mom, Aunt and Uncle can say more is that he wasn't close to his father after his mother (Martha) died. He had a sister named Ruby and according to familysearch.org his youngest sister was your grandmother. I've never heard anything about what you mention but its possible that both your grandmother and my grandfather had a falling out with their father after Martha died and he remarried. In fact, his remarriage is the reason he left home so early in his mid teens.

Great! Will definitely investigate the site. As for John Nelson's info in my research, according to the 1900 census he arrived in the US from Norway in 1881 and married Annie Mjoen Pedersen in 1895. I found him listed in the June 1895 Iowa census living in Pelican Rapids, Otter Tail County, MN...single, born 1862, having resided in the area for approximately 4 years.

Thanks so much for your response. Yes...that is our new family blog! Basically, I have all info about Mr. Nelson up until 1900, as well as future census, birth, and death info for his children (my husband's great grandmother is daughter Linda). Mr. Nelson and wife Annie were married until his death in approx 1903/4. She later remarried an Oscar Olson from Swede in Pelican Rapids. I haven't been able to find his marriage record with Annie Mjoen Pedersen, or any info about his parents or siblings. He was a saloon keeper...and family lore paints him as a tempestuous individual. We know he immigrated from Norway in the 1880s...but with such a common name, I've had quite a time locating his immigration info. Any little tidbit would be most helpful! Thanks in advance!

Do you have a specific question? Do share all you can so that volunteer researchers won't repeat research you've already done.

Do you have a blog called Remember Me Genealogy, A Genealogy Journal with references to Mjoen family (Pelican Rapids, MN), Morben family (Barnesville, MN), Nelson family (Pelican Rapids, Otter Tail, MN) and Melvey family?

Your Nettie might be here on Find a Grave:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=TO...;

Minnesota Historical Society Family History aids:
http://www.mnhs.org/genealogy/index.htm

Clarence age 12 in Pelican Rapids 1905:
http://people.mnhs.org/census/Results.cfm

Nettie age 8 in Pelican Rapids 1905:
http://people.mnhs.org/census/Results.cfm

Alice age 6 in Pelican Rapids 1905:
http://people.mnhs.org/census/Results.cfm

Linda age 4 in Pelican Rapids 1905:
http://people.mnhs.org/census/Results.cfm

Clara hits in Otter Tail County in 1905:
http://people.mnhs.org/census/Results.cfm

Say "Thufron Falls" quickly and it sounds a lot like Thief River Falls.

TRF is in Pennington County, Minnesota - but I don't see a Paddock there.

Minnesota Historical Society Death Index does include some people with the surname Clark. Harry was born too early to be included in the MnHS Bith Index.

The marriage wasn't in MN:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nmttgs/marriagerecords/mar...

I was thinking Thufron Falls may have actually existed at one time, or had the name changed. Even searching for the word thufron (without quotes) turns up a blank, so it must have been a case of terrible spelling/writing.
