I've heard anecdotally that my husband's great grandfather was one of the orphan train riders from New York. Walter Denis Shanahan (b 05 January 1914 in New York) was adopted by a member of the Michael Shanahan (1828-1919) family of Olmsted county sometime between 1914 and 1920 when he appears on the 1920 census as an adpoted son to Michael Francis Shanahan (1872-1944). The Shanahan family were long time parishoners of St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Olmested Co.
I'm looking for anyone who might know some information about this adoption, but I realize this might just be a stab in the dark. Since obviously adoptions present some challenging roadblocks, I've been told that a good place to start looking for orphan train riders might be within church records of the adoptive family. Can any one tell me if St. Bridget's has this kind of information available? Any other info would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance!
