"Christian T. Laugeson, the enterprising and prosperous dealer in furniture, and the principal undertaker of the villiage of
Hutchinson, came to that place June 5,1869,and followed carpentering for two years. In 1871,he erected a shop and commenced the cabinet making business, and from this small beginning has grown his present establishment. In the year 1872 he put in a stock of furniture, being the first to embark in that line here. He is,in connection with his other business, the agent for the sale of sewing machines and organs.
Our subject is a native of Denmark, born February 15,1833. He was reared and educated in the land of his birth, and there made his home until 1869,when he emigrated to "Columbia's
Shores,"and came at once to
Hutchinson,as above related. In Denmark he was in the army for some months, after which he learned the carpenter's trade and cabinet making. While a member of the
Danish army, the conflict, known as the Sleswick-Holstein war, broke out between his native country and
Prussia, and he was one of the garrison of
Fort Frederitsia when the
German forces stormed it,and was one of the last to evacuate the works. After the close of the hostilities,he followed contracting and building in the summer, and cabinet making in the winter, until he emigrated. He came to this country by way of
Hamburg,Liverpool,Quebec and Chicago.
Mr. Laugeson was united in the bond of matrimony,November 17,1853,with Miss Karen
Christenson, who died in 1874,leaving five children to mourn her loss. The names of the children are- Merry,
Lauger,Niels c.,Catrina and Andrew. November 26,1875,Mr. Laugeson again entered the marriage state, this time with Mrs. Mary
Christenson.
He is the most prominent member of the
Danish Baptist church, and has had charge of the same since its organization,in which he was the prime mover. He is the superintendent of the Sabbath-school attatched to that congregation, and is the real founder of the Scandinavian Temperance Society,of which he is president. He is also the president of the Scandinavian
Friendly Society of that place,of which organization he was one of the foremost leaders. This society owns a building in the best business locality of the city, with a library and free reading room, especially intended to be a benefit to the young people of the Scandinavian population."
