My g. grandfather Albert Bennett owned 80 acres in Cedar Township, Martin Co. from 1890 until his death in 1942 in Section 32. I picked up a plat map at the County Museum from 1887 last week that shows Stone Lake with an old fort at its southern edge. By 1912 another plat calls the fort Stone Lake Fort. Stone Lake has moved north to an undeveloped section and is much smaller. I presume the original lake was drained and farmed. I am curious to learn more about this fort. It may have been built during the Sioux uprising of 1862.

Rich Stevens

I am married to a "Malherek". We are pretty sure that the name was originally "Malcherek" in Poland.

There has been quite a bit of research done on the Malherek family from the Blue Earth, MN by my wife's cousins. I am trying to determine whether your John Malcherek is the brother of a Martin Malherek (b.1855 Poland, d. 1938 Minnesota). I believe this to be the case but do not have genealogical proof.

At one time the families seemed to have lived in the same part of Minnesota but did not seem to interact with one another. Some even are buried in the same cemetery in Blue Earth, MN.

I think John became divorced from Angeline and moved to Colorado....some of the data that suggests this include the following:

* 1900 - John/Angeline & Family show up in Fed Census in Pilot Grove, Faribault MN

* 1910 - Angeline & Family are alone in Fed Census in MN

* 1910 - A Divorced John Malcharak appears in Pueblo Colorado in the Fed Census about the same age as the one from MN in 1900

* 1920 - A Divorced John Malcherek appears in Pueblo Colorado during the Fed Census about the same age as the one from MN in 1900

Would like very much to compare notes. Best Regards.

Re: Wegner Family

I, too have connections to Wegners in Martin County, MN.

I've pieced together the following information based on census records and a book published by Norma Gottschalk ("The Garbisch Garden"):

Wilhelm Frederick August Wegner (b: 27 JUL 1841 in Germany) marries Johanna Eidis (Hanna) Garbisch (b: 23 APR 1846 in Jackson, WI) on 20 JUN 1866 in Wisconsin. Johanna's father, Georg Garbisch lived with the family in the Town of Scott, Sheboygan County, WI until he died in 1883.

Wilhelm Frederick August Wegner and Johanna have seven children (Eduard 1867, Henry 1869, Clara 1871, Ranetta 1872, Paul 1873?, Otto 1873?, and Gustav 1875). I believe at least Henry and Ranetta (probably the otehrs as well) were born in the Town of Scott, Sheboygan County, WI.

Eduard was married in the Town of Scott in 1889 and his first 5 children were born in Martin County, MN. Henry and Clara married their spouses in Martin Couny, MN (bothin 1891).

Eduard, Henry, and Paul (and perhaps other siblings as well) had children who were born in Fairmont. Clara is buried in Maple, MN. Rannetta married Herman Hinz, had about 12 children, died in 1944 and is buried in Lakeside Cemetery, Fairmont, MN.

This seems to indicate the whole family left for Martin County sometime after George Garbisch died (1883-1889). But when and why? (Perhaps to meet up with Wilhelm Frederick August Wegner's family? If so who and what relation?)

Wilhelm Frederick August Wegner died in Martin County, MN in 1929, his wife Johanna died 17 JUN 1926.

It seems that this area was very important to the Wegner family. (Interestingly enough, my part of the relations [Eduard] came back to Sheboygan County with his family around 1900 - but why? Perhaps to be with his wife's [Sophia Auguste Johanna Klug]relation?)

Specifically, I'm looking for...
- the burial location for Wilhelm Frederick August and Johanna Wegner.
- connections between this Wegner family and other Wegner families in Martin County, MN. (Perhaps Fredrich Wegner and my Wilhelm Frederick August Wegner are related? Brothers?)
- verification of the parents for Wilhelm Frederick August Wegner. Currently, Norma's reseach indicates his parents as Michael Wegner and Louise Marten. However, I have no validation of this from other sources.
- where did Wilhelm Frederick August Wegner come from in Germany? The 1880 census in Sheboygan County (WIlliam Wagner) lists his birthplace as Hannover. Norma's research lists it as Harmsdorf.
- any other fun information! Wilhelm Frederick August Wegner is my 3g grand father and it would be fantastic to know more about his roots!

The Johnsons were Mohawk. They have a long history on line if you google Sir William Johnson and read about his Mohawk wives.

Wm. Johnson [1715-1774]the English Crown's Indian agent in the New York Colony was "married" to Molly [Degonwadonti]Brant [ca. 1737-1796.] She is quite famous, again a google search will give you tons of information.

The direct lineage is a little cloudy. I have names, but I have one generation that has some questions as to which man fathered which children. I have been unable to find records.

As an aside, I have several noticeable "Mohawk" traits. Years ago my future sister-in-law wanted to know what tribe I was from. That was the first time someone thought I might be Indian. It got me to searching for the elusive Mohawk connection.

George Ziemer was born in Lake Fremont twp., Martin co., MN

Rebecca Dale's mother was Melissa White [1810-1886], according to my records.

I had a newspaper clipping that featured gr-Grandma Olive Ziemer Detienne which spoke of her experience with Jesse James. However, this is a popular story told in many families.

I was only 10 when Grandma died, so I have only a few memories of her. Her son, Archie [1903-1937] died young and my grandma Ethyl remarried, so our contact with Gr-grandma was limited.

I'd be happy to send you a file.

Barb,
I have lots to ask, not sure where to start. I have him born 1824 on the Six Nations reserve in Ontario & dying 1883 in Fairmont. I am trying to confirm the names of his parents.

Much of what I have on file is speculative. I know much of it is correct but some depends on William's parents. Anything that you can share would be appreciated. Thanks!
Rob

I've found some info on free Minnesota sites:
1. DeWitt Wilber Needham died in 1923
2. Some of his daughters were married in Martin County
3. Ethel's married name was McCadden

There was more but I can't remember it all. I also located a family tree which indicates DeWitt's lineage. Glad to email it to you, if you'll kindly send me your email address. Send a quick email to me at
MaryLouGrymyr@aol.com
and I'll fire this stuff off to you.

Happy Easter,
Mary Lou

I'm looking for any information on my great-grandfather George H. Reed of Martin County.

B: abt 1851/2 in Vermont
M: 1904 to Mina (aka Minnie aka Minna) Rose Anderson of East Chain; they settled in Fairmont and had five children over the next 12-13 years, before a divorce abt 1917/8.

We know he was married and divorced prior to his marriage to Mina, but do not know any further information on that family, nor do we know any information on his lineage - our records stop cold at his name.

I have a suspicion about his first marriage, but cannot find any substantial proof. I'm looking for any help in finding a way through this wall.

I think Sophie was a chosen name, though, based on the 1895 Minnesota census--I can't make out the name but it definately ends in -ophina, maybe the source of the chosen Sophie? Hope that helps some :-)

this thread is several years old but would enjoy hearing from anyone who may have any information on the Steuber family of Martin county. I am doing some research on the family of Martin Herman Steuber. His wife's name is Margurite and they had 2 sons. Barnard is deceased but his brother is still living. About a year ago I started a message board and mailing list for the Steuber surname. I don't have much information on them, but would be willing to share what I have.
I am not a young lady so I can't tell you much. My father never talked about family much. I can give you all the names of The August Ziemer family from the list that Aunt Ollie wrote in 1949. Some of the dates are different from what I am finding out on the computer. This is all new to me. I just got my computer so what you have told me is great information. Emmett Ziemer, William Ziemer's son is the one that mentioned the Native American Indian. It had never been mentioned at home. Thanks again. Maybe I can help. Barb.

I know this is a long time ago that you posted this, but hope you will answer sometime. I am just learning about my ancestors on my father's side. He was George Ziemer, Aunt Ollie's brother. I am trying to find out their true place of birth. Everything I find on the computer says Fremont, Winona Mn. I don't believe that is true. My father said they were born over by Dunnel. Did Aunt Ollie ever tell you about Jesse James stopping for supper after the Northfield raid? She loved to talk. I believe that Daniel Dale's wife was Rebecca White. Thanks so much for all the information you gave me. Barbara

My father was George Ziemer brother to Olive . I am the yougest of the family. Was most of the family born at lake Fremont. I have a source that says Fremont, Winona county, but I always thought it was by Dunnel. I have a sheet that Olive wrote back in 1949 giving all the dates of birth and anmes of William Johnson and the August Ziemer line.I also have the mnames of August's family. Barb
