Captain Mclauchlan lived in duluth from 1880 to 1890 most of his children were born in duluth, William H, Mary, Annie, Jessie and Catherine and one more girl I don't know her name...wife was Catherine Pyette from owen sound ontario canada. Grandpa was from Scotland. I understand in 1890 they moved to beaver bay area and after he retired from the lakes he was the post master for beaver bay from 1919 until he died in 1926. Grandma died in 1929. They are buried in the two harbors cemetary. His obituary in the two harbors paper claims they were one of the early settlers in the area, he was a unique and colorful character.
I suffer from a huge curiosity of what their lives were like back then, Catherine McLauchlan got a delayed registration of birth and social security card in 1943 using school records from two harbors (I would love to see those records, to try to figure out how far she traveled to go to school since she was living in beaver bay, what school was like back then, what their lives were like, what they had for property etc. Being a captain on ocean going vessels their livlyhood was no doubt above average but what were their lives actually like)
