If you are interested, I have access to ARKIV Digital, a Swedish dB that has photographed all available parish records, by parish. This includes birth, household census, death, marriage, etc. I'm happy to do a few lookups.

Do you have a relative named Paula in the Ortonville area?

Thank you! That is exactly right. My paternal great-grandmother was Christina Skoog Halsten-Johnson - "Grandma Johnson" to my dad. Since I wrote this query I have been invited to the Skoog/Christianson family reunion in Millbank, SD on June 22. I and my husband are going out on the 19th so I can do some research - in the museum in Lac Qui Parle County and scouting the various cmeteries there where I have Connor and Mason from my Irish side buried and the Swedish Mission cemetery. One of my Skoog connections knows where to find it and we are going to visit there on the 21st. It is as overgrown as your photo and the ones I have of Anders Skoog and Erik Halsten. I have been "deep" into the Swedish church records available at the local Family History Library and have been able to track the families of Skoog and Halsten to their Varmland, Sweden villages. Great fun! I have read your later posts on this and thank you for your searches. I am now hoping to find out something on GGpa Erik in the research center in LQP county. Fingers crossed, anyway! thank you again, Sharyn

The Ortonville Independent first published around 1920. Prior to that it was the Ortonville Herald.

Lets cross our fingers.

I too have questions concerning the Swedish Mission Cemetery that is 1/2 mile west of the SD/MN border. There's a Walter Township building on the border as well. It's very confusing. My family says the cemetery is in Vernon Township, Grant County, South Dakota.

My great grandmother Anna Lisa (Johannesdotter) Anderson is buried there as well, she died in 1897. I have no clue why she was buried there.

Christina Skoog married my 1st cousin 2x removed in 11 Nov 1895 in Nassau. John Peter Johnson and Christina both lost their spouses. Together they had one son, Clarence Walter Johnson born 16 Nov 1896 in Nassau. Does this sound correct to you?

Hi... I am looking for more information on my Otto surname. Joachim Otto (father b.1815), Wilhelm Otto (son b. 1843) and Dorothea Otto (daughter b.1852 and married August F. Shultz) came to the United States from Prussia around 1869. They settled in Lac Qui Parle, Minnesota. Wilhelm married Ida Schultz (sister to August Schultz I believe) and had the following children: William, Emil Henry, Concordia, Oscar, Othmar, Max Robert (my line) and Frederick Herman Otto.

Any information you can share would be greatly appreciated.

Okay - found Martin at Minnesota Historical Society 1905 state census as Martin Snethun (rather than m) in Riverside, Lac Qui Parle, Minnesota.

Martin Snethum is buried at Garfield Cemetery, Garfield township, Lac Qui Parle, Minnesota. I searched this webpage (link below) for Larson/Larsen, Hjalmar, Torper, Markus, and don't see him. I also searched Minnesota Historical Society birth index for child named Larson mother maiden name Snethun/m and no hits.
LINK:
http://files.usgwarchives.net/mn/lacquieparle/cemetery/garfi...

What did you think of that 1910 census for Hpalmar Sarson b 1883 in Norway living in Saint Louis County, Minnesota? or 1910 H M Lorson in Adams, North Dakota...Jalmar Larson in Lac Qui Parle can't be him (born Minnesota)...hmmm

Where did his siblings live again?

The best immigration record that I have is a Hjalmar Larsen coming to Cerro Gordo, Minnesota to a cousin named Marthin Snethum. When I looked in the 1905 census, this Marthin J. Snethum was in Dawson Township in Lac Qui Parle, Minnesota.

yes - thought I cited your thread. The additions can help volunteer researchers in this thread identify Hjalmar in the USA. For example, parents' names may be on a marriage or death certificate. The location of his siblings in the USA could be a clue to his whereabouts. And so on.

The frustrating thing for me is I look in the Boston Immigration Records and do not find anything. The best Immigrant record I found had him going to a cousin in this county, and because he went to a cousin that I have not connected to my family, it makes me wonder if he even came to this county. Thanks again. Jeff

Not finding him, or rather, like you I found some candidates but no one who is definitely the right man. Hmmm. Sources to search (just in case some may be new to you):

Ancestry.com (use * as a wildcard when searching)
Family Search
Library of Congress "Chronicling America" Minnesota newspapers
Minnesota Historical Society state census (Family History) www.mnhs.org
Minnesota Historical Society Birth Index "
Minnesota Historical Society Death Index "
Minnesota Official Marriage System (MOMS) www.mncounty.org
Find a Grave
ØSTFOLDLAG, link:
http://www.fellesraad.com/ostfoldlag.htm

More about him, from another volunteer and posted in another thread of yours.
1902 Emigration from Oslo
Single man, age 21, and left Oslo 18 July 1902, residence Rakkestad, destination Boston (fare 'Prp.' which is probably prepaid). I am glad that you now at least have that little child's birth date.

Yes, I know you know about Marcus the ancestor, from your other posts. But I have no way of knowing if you are aware of the collection of materials at MNHS re. Markus Thrane - that collection was the point.
I am seeking information on a little girl who died in Madison, Wisconsin around the date of 23 January 1903. She was the daughter of Dr. Marcus and Mabel (Ellis) Thrane. He was a practicing physician in that area. I believe the little girl might have had the first name of Thea.

Any help would be appreciated.

born in April 25, 1881 from Rakkestad, Ostfold, Norway. He came to the Cerro Gordo, Minnesota in July 18, 1902 according to the Digital Archives of Norway. This is farthest I have for him. I was hoping someone had access to records there to see if he is on next Census, or Declaration of Intentions, Tax Records, Passports or WWI enlistments for him. He may have possibly gone to Hennepin, Minnesota too. Thanks in advance for anything that may help locate this gentleman.
Morrison County
Minnesota USA

Cemetery notes and/or description:
On June 10, 1908, John Reynold Fredrickson sold three acres to Swedish Mission Church of Darling in NE1/4 Section 35 Township 130 North Range 30 West. On January 30, 1914, a plat was filed which contained 0.83 acre for cemetery of the three acres. On November 10, 1932, the Swedish Evangelical Mission Church, Darling was incorporated. A church was built on the site and it was dismantled and moved to Randall, Morrison County, Minnesota about 1944. The congregation ceased operation in the middle 1960s and the property in Randall was sold on March 19,1975. The church still stands on the property (2011).

The cemetery was shown on an old USGS Map as the Old Darling Mission Cemetery.

The cemetery is landlocked with no direct access. Several burials in the cemetery, per records or burial permits, were transferred to other cemeteries in the 1950s as follows.

Transfer to Darling Lutheran Cemetery -
Theresa A. Swanson September 2, 1954
Josephine M. Johnson August 12, 1957
Emma C. Swan November 6, 1959
John Swan November 6, 1959
Carl E.
Wondering if there is access to an old newspaper of the area at the time of his death. My great-grandfather who married Christina Skoog. They both were from Varmland, Sweden. Or if you know where I could go to search for this information. Thank you, Sharyn

Trying to find out what happened to Daniel E Pegg, son of Elijah Pegg. He appears in the 1885 c. for Augusta with his father and stepmother. But is not in the 1900 c. and not with the family when they moved to Oregon.

Thanks.
