Willing to do lookups in Cottonwood County

I was a Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness volunteer who did look ups for Cottonwood County until that lovely site closed. But I am still willing to do local lookups. I live within a mile of the Courthouse and Historical Society. I also do volunteer headstone photos for Find A Grave, although this time of year the snow generally precludes that.
I would be glad to assist people in this forum but I need to know specifically what you want not just a request for general information. Do you want a vital record transcription, obituary, burial record? Please calculate what would most likely carry your research forward and ask for that.
Or contact Cottonwood County Historical Society (cchs@windomnet.com) for fee based research. $10. per hour plus copying costs.

I need his obit but was not able to find it.

His wife Charlotte died 4-1-1998. She was married to Fred Stenke, Jr after Orin died. Her obit would be Charlotte Stenke.

Thanks for your reply. I did find one of Aaron and Elizabeth’s sons, John (and his family) in the 1885 census for Windom. Also a few lines down, another son, Charles with his son Samuel J Hamilton. No sign of Aaron and Elizabeth in Windom or Great Bend though. In 1880, they were both living with son Paul, son Charles and his son Samuel. I’m going to try and find Paul somewhere in subsequent censuses or in surrounding area and see if Aaron and Elizabeth were with him.

If you are willing to go to historical society and look for obits or cemetery listing or the courthouse for death records, I would so greatly appreciate it!

If you come across any of their children’s death information too I would appreciate it! I only know about Amos (my 3rd great grandfather) and John because I’m in touch with one of his grandchildren who has information.

Have you looked at the Minnesota State Censuses?

Great Bend is a township in Cottonwood County. I am writing you from there as the city of Windom is it's main component.

I've looked at the sites I use on line and don't find their names except this
Hamilton, Aaron I.
Age: 46
Ethnicity: White
Birth place: New York
Census ID# 2013780
County: McLeod
City/Township: Hutchinson
Gender: male
Census Year: 1895

Probably a better approach from where you are is to actually scroll through the 1885 state census for which you can find images on Ancestry. When you search, go to the card file, enter "Minnesota State and Territorial Census" and follow the prompts to look at 1885, Minnesota, Cottonwood, Great Bend or "Village of Windom" if it appears.
Then scroll through the pages looking for their names. If this description of the process doesn't get you to the right place, let me know.

Later in the day I can brave the heat and look at the local historical society for obits and cemetery listings and perhaps even at the courthouse for death records.

Another approach would be to try to find the sons and grandsons in subsequent censuses.

Death of Aaron and Elizabeth HAMILTON

Hello,

I'm trying to find out information on the deaths of my fourth great-grandparents, Aaron HAMILTON and his wife Elizabeth (don't know her maiden name). The last trace I have of them, they were living in Great Bend, MN in 1880 with two sons and grandson. They were in their 80s at this time (according to the census, both were 80 but I believe they were a bit older from my other research). They were both born in Pennsylvania and had at least 11 children that I know of.

I believe they died in Cottonwood County and are buried here but have not come across any information to verify this hunch. Any help or advice on how to approach this?

I searched the Cottonwood County boards for that name but didn't find it and I don't recall it myself. Also we have nearly completed listing the cemeteries in Cottonwood County on Find a Grave but I don't see the name there. Sorry I can't help.

The paper is the Jeffers Review published in Jeffers MN. Yes I forgot to write down the date which was within the week of each event. I'll go back tomorrow and get the exact date. Maybe they will have changed the ink cartridge.

However his condition again became worse and on Friday afternoon he again entered the hospital where he died at 1:25,Saturday afternoon, at the age of 68 years, 3 months and 24 days.

O. N. McCloud Dies At Westbrook Hospital

Orin N. McCloud died at the Dr. Schmidt Memorial Hospital at Westbrook Saturday afternoon, October 6, after a long illness.

Orin McCloud, son of Leota Brown and Salathiel McCloud was born at Lohrville, Iowa on June 12, 1888. His boyhood and school days were spent on the farm of his parents where he remained until the time of his marriage. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian Faith. His membership was transferred to the Methodist Church in Jeffers.

He was untied in Marriage to Mamie Ness of Linn Grove, Iowa, on March 9, 1910 at Lohrville, Iowa. They made their home in Iowa until 1921 when they moved to Jeffers, Minnesota. They move to the George Potter farm northeast of Jeffers for a few years and then moved in the old ? farm where they lived for 12 years. In 1939 they bought ? farm home west of Jeffers from J. W. Shaw, moving there in 1940.

Mr. McCloud was a kind husband and father and a good neighbor. He was a great lover of sports and never missed attending the local baseball games as long as his health ?. He was also interested in basketball and almost always attended the school games.

Mr. McCloud had been ill over a period of several years. He and Mrs. McCloud spent the winter of ? in Arizona in hopes that his illness would be somewhat reversed. Since their return in the spring of 19? , Mr. McCloud has been in the hospital on numerous occasions.

Just prior to his death he had spent a few days in the Westbrook hospital. He had returned home on September 24. However his condition ???????????????

Selma Township/Cottonwood County birth records book B, page 202, item 7
John Bernhard Erickson born Aug 8, 1885, a white male born in Selma Township to Daniel (a farmer) and Anna both from Sweden.

The family is in the 1895 MN census of Bashaw Township, Brown County, page 5.

Thank you for your help! I really appreciate it. Jonh was my great grandfathers brother. We dont know what happened to him after about age 15. He and his older sister Lillie worked for a family in Deerhorn Minnesota in 1900 but thats the last record I can find.

I think the only thing to be found here would be his birth in the Selma Township records at the Courthouse. I'll look for that on Monday.
In case you didn't know, Bashaw Township in Brown County is the township just to the north of Selma Township in Cottonwood County. They didn't move far between 1885-1895.

I am looking for any information regarding a John Erickson born in 1885 in Selma, Minnesota. His fathers name was Daniel Erickson and his mother was Anna. He also had an older brother Erik, and an older sister Lillie. I have found John and Lillie working for the Wray family in the 1900 census in Wilkin county, Deerhorn, Minnesota. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I attach a scan of the obit. Not much there. So I stopped at the Courthouse on the way home to look at the death register. You said you have his MN death info but I didn't know if that just mean you have the basics from the online data base or full details. Here's what I found
born 6/6/1868 in Smoland Sweden, spouse Mary Johnson, widowed, no Social Security #, father Carl Loving, mother Kristina Loving.

I have a relative who died in Cottonwood co...believe in Windom as he lived with his granddaughter. Not sure there would be an obit there but if you have time to check sometime, it would be greatly appreciated. Name was (Adolf) Gottfred Loving and he died Dec. 9, 1957. I have his Minnesota death record.

Mary Ellen, what is the name of the Theesfeld that you are interested in? I have OSBs from Ostfriesland that list many of the Theesfelds and also have information about the Theesfelds from back in the 1500s.

We have determined that the Theesfeld that I was interested in was no relation to the other Theesfelds in Cottonwood County. Therefore I am not really interested in them.

Hi,
I checked Find a Grave and noted all the work you did. I have done alot of research on the Windom Theesfelds to determine if there was a connection. I have decided that they are connected way way back in Ostfriesland; however, there is no close relationship to my Simon. But did determine with the help of the 1925 Iowa state census that George Otto and Henry Charles are indeed brothers and that there is another brother named Johannes Heinrich Albertus Theesfeld (b. 1874). Johannes had a son named Adelbert (b. 1903) who is on Find a Grave. Fascinating isn't it?!!! Anyway thanks for posting all that information. I am not currently subscribed to Ancestry so cannot see the tree.

I was intrigued by all this so I did a couple of small family trees here on Ancestry for Windom families headed by George Theesfeld and Simon Theesfeld. I worked from obituaries at Cottonwood County Historical Society and what I could find on line.
First of all - the Henry Charles Theesfeld who died in Windom and is buried in Estherville's Roman Catholic cemetery does not appear to be related to either Windom family. They do not appear to be related to each other either but both attended the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, originally the German Lutheran church in town and now Missouri Synod. It is only slightly smaller that the Norwegian Lutheran church here, now called American Lutheran.

I was intrigued by all this so I did a couple of small family trees here on ancestry for Windom families headed by George Theesfeld and Simon Theesfeld. I worked from obituaries at Cottonwood County Historical Society and what I could find on line.
First of all - the Henry Charles Theesfeld who died in Windom and is buried in Estherville's Roman Catholic cemetery does not appear to be related to either Windom family. They do not appear to be related to each other either but both attended the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, originally the German Lutheran church in town and now Missouri Synod. I was able to trace the George O Theesfeld family enough to do satisfactory work on both Ancestry and Find a Grave. I added text from obituaries where possible. Since no one is related to them, I won't go further.

Marcia, I got far enough on the Simon Theesfeld tree to go from his parents down to you and even two of Myron's grandsons. Amazing what is available on line. The tree is called the Simon Theesfeld of Windom Family Tree. I will eventually take it down. If you would like a copy as a GEDCOM file, I'd be glad to send it.
On Find a Grave I have linked Simon to his parent's graves and to everyone's graves down to your mother Ella. I believe I was able to attach all of his children on links to him and his wife. Again, I added obituary material. I probably won't be able to photograph the Windom graves until the snow clears off the ground, whenever that may be.

I hope this is useful to both you and Mary Sicard. I don't usually do this much work on a request but the convergence of the two families plus one individual intrigued me.
