Goodells, Luella and family in Carlton County about 1880 and beyond

Interested in connecting with Luella Goodell and her family from Carlton County. She and my grandmother Ida Viola Ostlund Olson must have been lifelong childhood friends, have postcards from Idas collection written and signed by Luella. I see on the Historical website is a group shot of her high school graduation from Barnum. Ida was a year older, not in the photo.

Anyone know the Goodells? Her dad was John Sprague and mother was Augusta it seems and was in the funeral business.

Andersons and Ostlunds in Carlton Co, 1880s to beyond

Hi All,

My John Oscar Ostlund b. 1849 in Sweden married Johannah Louisa Hammerland. They married in Sweden, had first 2 of thier 6 kids there before emmigrating to CarltonCo about 1882. Kids were Oscar, Walborg, Minnie, Ida, Emma and Albert. All married but Emma died as a baby and Albert remained single. Oscar had 2 children, Walborg 10 perhaps, Minnie 2 and Ida had my mother.

When John died in 1899, his obituay listed he left a surviving sister, Mrs. Anderson ( no first name unfortunately). My research suggest she is Mrs. Andrew Anderson, AKA Emma S. I cant find them in 1900 census, but 1910 census lists Andrew, Emma S and a daughter Lulu, age 19. She lists she had 4 children of which 2 were still living. They also list they had been married 39 years and both emmigrated in 1870 to the US.

Anyone know either family?

Sue
sodixey @ hotmail.com ( omit spaces)

These are the correct people, however, Helene was born in Kozki, Russian Poland. The census taker made a mistake there, or she didn't want to admit being a German at that time. She was born 1884. I have their wedding certificate, her entry into the US, and family lore has her married to Arthur Rasmussen. I have family photos as well. I have them on censuses for Sheridan, MT since 1920, but not finding Demlangs. Thanks! Love the puzzle!

Thanks. Helene lived in Culbertson MT for a time, and married Arthur A. Rasmussen in Plentywood, MT 1916 and they had two daughters, June and Mae. They were farmers near Sheridan MT. Arthur died around 1961, I do not have that info on Helene. I have searched that area for her parents, and not found them.

You have the correct Adolph Tonn. The original passenger transcript (14 Apr 1903)was clear about Gottfried Demlang being Adolph Tonn's "bil" at Cloquet, MN and the destination as well. Gottfried paid for the passage.

Wilhelmine Dimlony and Helene Dimlony arrived together Nov 12,1901 on the ship Vaderland from Antwerp to meet Gottfried Demlang at Hennepin Ave in Minneapolis. The handwriting was read as Dimlony instead of Demlang. They were born in Kozki, Russian Poland. Wilhelmine born 1873 and Helene born 1893.Emilie Kalis/kaliv is next to them as meeting a brother in law,and she is also from the same town. A relative as well?

Helene was a witness to Adolph and Myrtle's wedding at Virginia, MN. She signed the certificate. She ended up in North Dakota and Montana, but where did her parents go?

How does this interest you? Thanks for any information you can provide. There are many Demlangs in the Ancestry records, but none fit the ones I am searching for.

I am hoping to find someone who might be able to look up an obituary for me from 1943.

Oscar Gullickson
b. 1874, Norway
d. about November 24, 1943 (per Minnesota Death Index)
Lived in: Scanlon, Carlton County, Minnesota

It is possible that he changed his name upon arrival to the United States in 1903. Other possible name is Karl Oscar Olesen (Olsen).

Thanks!

I think that the only cemetery in cloquet at that time was the Calvary/Hillcrest cemetary. Its located next to Pinehurst park in the middle of town. Otherwise the Maple Grove cemetery on Big Lake Rd. just west of town might have been around at that time. Hopefully this helps a little bit.

Here is a link to the Minnesota Historical Society's Death Certificate Index where you will find:

GOODELL, John S.
Date of Birth 1856
Place of Birth: NH
Mother Maiden Name: Hutchins
Date of Death: 22 Nov 1905
County of Death: Carlton
Cert ID # 1905_39_555

For some reason there is a second entry for what appears to be the same man with a County of Death given as St. Louis and a certificate # of 1905_44_2849.

You can order a copy of the certificate(s) directly from that site:

http://people.mnhs.org/dci/Results.cfm?CFID=21300344&CFT...

Augusta died 05 June 1938 in Carlton County:

http://people.mnhs.org/dci/Results.cfm?CFID=21300344&CFT...

You can search for the other family members on that site, which also includes a birth index and general genealogy query search option.

Beth
not related

I am seeking any information on the John Sprague Goodell and Augusta Littlefield Family of Barnum, Carlton, MN: this family lived in Barnum from 1882 until the 1930's. John Sprague Goodell was b. Whitefield, Coos,NH 15 July 1856; married Augusta Littlefield 23 Sept 1873 Bethlehem, Grafton, NH; died before the 1910 census, probably in Barnum, MN. Augusta Goodell, born Nov 1855 Bartlett, Carroll, NH, died after the 1930 census when she was still living in Barnum, MN. Children included Charles Zina Goodell, b. NH 1875; Clara Mabel Goodell b. 1879 NH; John Sprague, Jr., b. Feb 1880 NH and married Lillian B. ___ in MN in 1907; Luella P. Goodell b. Apr 1886 MN; Augusta L. Goodell b. 1882 and died young; and Myron Clifford Goodell, b. 1898 ND. Most of these family members lived much or all of their lives in Barnum, Carlton, MN. Where were they buried? Who did they marry? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. I am Bob Glidden jbgliden@scican.net .

I don't know if there are records...but you might try the county court house...or the Minnesota Genealogy Society? Historical? ... I know about it from what I was told, and it was many many years before your Mom was there. I'm sure that there must be census records or something ... have we located the county in this thread? Is it St. Louis Co? ... if you want to post an email addy, I'll send you all the pictures I have...not many but something may look familiar to you.
Priscilla

My mother, Cecilia (Maloney) Allee was in the Nopeming Tuberculosis Sanitarium from late 1945 to sometime in 1948/1949. My younger brother was born in the sanitarium and immediately placed into a foster home, as my father had to work and wasn't able to take care of an infant. All I remember her saying about it was she spent a lot of time crocheting and doing jigsaw puzzles. As I was not yet 3 years old when she went in, I had little memory of my mother. One time my Dad took me to see her which meant I stood out in the grounds and looked up at a lady looking out of a window on the top floor, who I was told was my mother. There were six of us kids at that time. When mother was released they started with the oldest child coming home, then the next oldest etc. Not too long after we were all back home we moved from Minnesota out to Oregon.

Help needed with a Marriage- Divorce record for John Rousseau

My great grandfather was John Jonas Rousseau born May 17, 1875 in Beaver Island, Michigan.

He told his family he moved to Minnesota in 1900 and married a woman from the Fon du lac Reservation. They had one daughter together. I do not know either of the women's names. He remarried in Grand Marais and none of his family ever met this first child.

In 1910 John Rousseau was living in Cook County, Minnesota and according to the census he was divorced.

Is there anyone who would be willing to search Carlton County for the marriage and / or divorce record for John Rousseau for me. I am willing to pay costs. The marriage and divorce would have been between 1900 and 1910.

Does Fon du lac have there own vital record holdings? Or would this be at the county level?

Thank you,
Delayne

Hi: My a Wakefield, cousin to Junie and niece to Clara. Ruth had a daughter whose name is also Ruth. I believe William adopted her. Junie and Gerald (Buck) Bloomquist had 6 children, and I believe they are still alive although I haven't corresponded with them in years. June passed away from cancer, and I lost touch with Gerald a couple of years ago when he didn't reply to a holiday card, something he did every year. I have Ruth's daughter's name but haven't heard from her in 2 years. I possibly have an area where she currently lives.

In searching for my grandfather's sisters, his sister, Hilda married a Gus Simula in Michigan in 1909.
It appears that a Gust and Hilda Simula both passed away on May 1, 1945 in Carlton County.
There's a second Hilda Simula who passed away in St. Louis, Minnesota in 1958.
I tried looking for a genealogy society in Carlton County but couldn't seem to find one.
I'm trying to determine which Hilda Simula would be mine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I know this was posted along time ago but I thought I'd answer anyways. I live in Wrenshall, MN which is right outside of Carlton Minnesota. I have also been looking for the parents of Allen Hiram Cook, which is my grandfather Roy Walter Cook's dad. I haven't had any luck and am wondering if you ever figured this out.

If you have any new leads or where to look please let me know and maybe we can figure it out.
I am so thrilled to be scanning the internet and found this connection. My grandpa was Peter Fabian Sellman and my grandma was Carrie Esther Sedlund. Alma, Althea I know were 2 of my grandma's sisters. Do do by any chance still have the photograph you initially talked about? I would really love to show it to my mother who is one of their daughters. I have several times thought of putting together a family tree but never had enough information to do so. Anything you could send would be so helpful.

Thanks!

Bonnie Allen
Death information dated 1942 and 1921 respectively list place of death as Carlton, Minnesota and I am looking for burial location. I do know they were Roman Catholic originally so I can only assume they would be buried in an R.C. cemetery if there is one in the area.
Both were born in Quebec and since I live in Canada and don't know your system at all I am wondering if anyone can help me.
Thank you for your time.
Leigh LeBlanc

Bloomquist, Wakefield, Ah Wahse Seence, Smith, McCarthy

I am researching the family of Edward P Wakefield and Martha Smith. Their sixth child was born Oct 25 1902 in Aitken Co, MN. I don't know the other 5 siblings names.

There is no first name on her birth certificate but I believe she is Clara. I think she had two daughters:

1. June Gladys Wakefield born 1921 who married Gerald Bloomquist, they may have had 3 children.

2. Ruth

Clara married William McCarthy and they lived in Cloquet, MN. Clara and William are buried at New Calvary Cemetery, Cloquet. Clara died 1959. Want to get in touch with her daughter's family members. William McCarthy is my great uncle.

I am willing to exchange information. Thanks

rosemwc@yahoo.com
