Hello, My great Grandfather John Henry Bell moved to Anoka from St. George Parish, Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada with his younger brother Samuel E. Bell. This was in 1881 and his parents John & Mary Jane Bell received a land grant for 200 acres in 1840, where they raised their eleven children. On that land grant there is a Peter Goss who had property on the southern border of the Bell Homestead. Could this be one of your Goss family? Daniel Bell, Elk River MN

Hello My name is Daniel Bell and John Henry Bell and Wife Alice Amanda Joslin are my great grandparents. I am in the process of doing a geneology search for the Bells and have come up with some history. John Henry and Alice were married Apr 10 1895. John Henry Bell arrived in Ham Lake, Anoka County in 1881 and was born 1858 to Mary Jane Bell (b.1832 in Ireland, died 1905 in St George)and John Bell (b.1814, died 1881 in St. George)of St. George Parish,New Brunswick, Canada. Mary Janes Maiden name was Logan and I have a copy of a land grant to John Bell for 200 acres in Bonny River on the southeast side of Digdegwaush Lake, just south of the Winder river in Charlotte county New Brunswick in 1838. Mary Jane and John Bell were married in 1846 and had eleven children (Margaret b.May 1847, Mary b.April 27 1849, Martha b. June 22 1851, Ann b. Sept 22 1853, William b. Dec 22 1855, John Henry b. Mar 7 1858, Samuel E. b.March 22 1860, Charles b.May 8 1862. Robert b.1865, Hattie Helena b. 1867 and James Edward b. 1870. This is as far back as I have gone and seem to have hit a road block since I believe mary jane Logan was born in Ireland and I can not find her on the 1851 census. I have to speculate from here that Mary Jane logan was from the Logans that lived on the property next the Bell Homestead. Those Logans were a Samuel and Mary Logan married in Ireland, their children were Archibald, Jemima, Ellen, Elizabeth, Samuel, Robert, Nancy & William. I believe that Mary could have been their third child born between Jemima and Ellen since their birth dates are 1829 and 1833 while Mary jane was 1832 (which could work), It would also explain why she wasn't in the 1851 census because she would have been living next door married to John Bell. Any way Hope this helps and if you have any information that could help me please pass it along. God Bless, Daniel Bell

Hi all,
Several thousand obituaries have been added online, mostly from Fillmore and Anoka counties, but include other counties as well. They come from a variety of collections, both funeral home and newspapers. They can be researched from http://www.genealogybuff.com/uco/states/mn_uco.htm and http://www.genealogybuff.com/ucd/states/mn_ucd.htm

Some other good Minnesota resources are:

Minnesota Library of Files: http://www.genealogybuff.com/mn/

Minnesota Newspapers:
http://www.genealogybuff.com/np/minnesota_newspapers.htm

Minnesota Cities: http://www.genealogybuff.com/us_cities/minnesota_cities.htm

Minnesota Counties:
http://www.genealogybuff.com/us_counties/minnesota_counties....

Hope this helps,
Bill

The SSDI shows Russell Townsend's last residence as Minneapolis, MN. It does not mean that he died there. 66 year old. SSDI issued in Illinois. In Oct? He could have died at a cabin, hunting trip, doing last minute travelling before winter sets in. Best bets are Wisconsin or Illinois. There is a good chance for an obit in the Minneapolis paper. Try www.raogk.org. Expect to pay for the research.

There is a separate Robert Townsend that shows up on the SSDI so the first name should be Russell.

You can order a photocopy of the death certificate through their website, for a reasonable fee. I am going to the Anoka County History Center today to look up a death for another lady. I will see if they have any info on your Hannah Barnes.

There is only one male Townsend in the Minnesota Death Index for 1983. That is a Robert W. Townsend. Are you sure you have the first name and date of death correct? Please note also, that Minneapolis is in Hennepin County, and you posted your message to the Anoka County board.

I should have clarified what I knew about Angela [Hibbard] Starkey. She is listed as Angi Hibbard in the 1900 census in Mpls. with her son Myron Hibbard (her husband having died in 1890). I can't find her in the MN 1905 census. In the 1910 census she is listed as Angie Howell in Mpls with a different son (George). In the 1920 census she is again listed as Angie Howell and living with George again. I can not find her in the 1930 census.

I had hoped that the 29 Apr 1929 death of Angeline Starkey would be the hit but I have already checked that out and it is not the right person.

Thanks for the information, however.

Still stuck,

Al Hibbard

Starkey family

Has anyone followed the Starkey family that grew up in the Anoka area? John M. Starkey and Delia Ann Gay had the children: John A., Samuel D., Addison Dennis, Angeline, Thomas Jeferson, Reubon Dudley, Delia Ann, and Laura Ett.

In particular, I would like to learn about the death of Angeline. She married Herman Hibbard 4 Jul 1876 and then he died in 1890. Somewhere along the line she married a Howell but no census has her living with him (but named a Howell while living with her children). I can't find her in the 1930 census and don't know what happened to her. Herman was my grandfather's uncle.

I am also interested in learning what happened to Laura Ett Starkey. She was born in abt 1874 but I know of nothing else. Finally, I do not know much about the descendants of any of the other children.

Any ideas?

Joseph Vilendrer and family first came to Minnesota in or about 1879. On the 1870 census, they were in Bedford Township in Monroe County, Michigan. On the 1880 census, they were in Anoka County, Minnesota. According to affidavits in his and Emeline's Civil War pension files, they moved to Minnesota in 1879. On the 1900 and later census, they were in Saint Paul MN. Tom Ross, San Diego CA, direct email: tross666@san.rr.com

Joseph Vilendrer (1844-1907) was also known as Joseph Landrey. In an affidavit in connection with her application for a pension as a widow of a Civil War veteran, his wife Emeline testified that Joseph was uneducated, that he signed his name by mark, that others in writing his name spelled it "Landrey" and called him "Landrey", but that his correct surname was Vilendrer.
I have info on Joseph Vilendrer (aka Joseph Landrey)(1844-1907) and Armeline Evans (aka Emeline Evans)(1844-1927)and family. Emeline was one of my wife's great-grandaunts. She had five siblings who reached adulthood: Joseph Evans (aka Joseph Lavance), Eveline (Evans) Jereau, Edward Evans, Moses Evans and Elizabeth (Evans) Stein. Except for Joseph Evans/Lavance, the Evans siblings lived in St Paul MN at one time or another. Both Joseph and Emeline were born in Canada, near Montreal, and came to or near Erie, Monroe County MI in the 1850s. Joseph served in the 67th Ohio Infantry in the Civil War. He and Emeline married in Erie on 16 Jan 1866. They moved to Minnesota in 1879.
Adeline Schwartz or Swartz is my great grandmother. I know nothing more on her parents. She was married numerous times.

She married a Frederick William Pettes (whom I just learned about). She had 2 children: Guilford Clark Pettes b. 1884 and Gladys Pettes b. 1883.

She next married Francois Xavier Lavallee and she had 2 more children: Alonzo Lavallee b. 1885, and Zoe Justine Lavallee (my grandmother)b. 1888.

She next married Thomas McCarthy and had 3 children: Daniel McCarthy b. 1896, Robert McCarthy b. 1898, and Kathryn McCarthy b. 1900.

She then married Frank Brock and died shortly afterwards.

Our family had her listed as Perkins so it is possible her first marriage might have been to a Perkins since she was about 29 yrs. old when she married Lavallee.

I hope this helps.

Sherry Rymer

There is a Laura E Starkey listed in the book "Silent Cities" which is a listing of tombstones in the Anoka County Cemeteries. It is recorded in the book as follows: Oakwood Cemetery (which is where her parents John & Delia are also buried)
Laura E Starkey, born Dec. 23, 1872 - died Apr. 10, 1890, aged 22(?) yrs, 4 mos, ? days.

I think the question marks were inserted if the tombstone was not legible. Further research would confirm if this is the Laura Ett you are looking for.

It is a puzzle to our family why they where in Anoka for his birth.

Does anyone know what was at this address in November of 1929? From @ 1897-@1924.
She was born in 1855 in Michigan and was married to a Warren Barnes who lived in Iowa.
I am thinking she died there and it was recorded in the county death records. I don't know her maiden name ...actually that is what I am looking for.I just found her at the hospital on the 1920 census. That was really a find.
Marilyn,

I may be able to help untangle the Reuteler/Kraus side of the Otto and Leonora (Reuteler) Wockenfuss family. My wife's grandmother Lillian Reuteler Carlson was sister of Leonora (commonly called Laura) Reuteler Wockenfuss. Their mother was Ida Kraus Reuteler. Ida Kraus' sister was Maria Kraus who married Fred Henschke. The lady you were responding to is a descendent of Fred and Maria (Kraus) Henschke.

I do have additional information on Laura Wockenfuss' parents, Conrad C. Kraus and Eva Caroline Oehrl.

While I was telling my wife about your message, I was chewing on a cookie. She said, "Do you realize that cookie was made with Aunt Laura's (Wockenfuss) recipe?"

Yes, Alan was the youngest of Otto and Laura's three children.

The Wockenfusses used to have a small resort on a lake near Milaca Minnesota. My wife remembers visiting there. This would have been in the late 1940's and early 1950's.

John Monson

Do you have information on the Kraus family that you would like to share? I would especially like to trace Conrad C. Kraus and Eva Caroline Oehrl (Ida Barbara and Marie's parents) back into the German states. I have some bits and pieces in Europe and a moderately good history of them in the US.

By the way, Ida Barbara Kraus Reuteler's daughter Leonora Amanda Reuteler married Otto Wockenfuss. Alan was the youngest of their three children.

John Monson

From "Joe Peltier, 92, Remembers First Train Through Hugo," Forest Lake Times, Sec V Page 7, 15 Sep 1949:

The year 1869 was a memorable one for the 12-year old lad, and to this day he remembers the first train that chugged into the depot at Hugo.

All those who cared to go for a free ride were taken aboard, and the train, consisting of five or six cars, pulled away from the station-a 20 x 20 structure made of wood slabs standing on piles....

Residents spent their time hunting and fishing, he says, with little thought of farming beyond the necessities.

Peddling fish and game, as well as blueberries and similar products in season, was a source of cash for many of the families.

Indians came frequently to the homes of early settlers, to gawk and to discuss matters of mutual concern, when they could speak French.

A visit to St. Paul in those days was a visit to a very small town. And after a long trip through the woods, one might come upon another small village, the present-day Minneapolis, known then as St. Anthony.

Re: Starkey family

I looked at the Minnesota Historical Society web site that was referred to in the previous note http://MNHS.ORG and didn't see a death certificate for Angeline Howell. I did however, see on the index a death certificate for an Angeline Starkey date of death 04-20-1929 in Hennepin County. Since you couldn't find her in the 1930 cencus, this could be your relative.

Now for the rest of your relatives, according to the MNHS death index.
John A. died 1-17-1925 Hennepin County
Samuel(Sam) D. married Laura died 12-26-1912 Hennepin County
Addison Dennis died 07-16-1925 Hennepin County
Thomas Jefferson died 02-04-1933 Anoka County
Reuben Dudley died 08-11-1948 Hennepin County
Delia Ann married name Hobbs died 04-29-929 Hennepin County

I saw Laura Ett on the 1880 cencus, but nothing after and couldn't find a death notice for her. She's still a question mark.

John M.Starkey was a civil war veteran. He was in the 8th regiment Company A Minnesota Infantry born 06-02-1827 or 1828, died 07-22-1913 buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Anoka, Mn.

Delia Ann Gay was born 09-26-1828, died 10-03-1913 in Anoka County, also buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Anoka, MN.

The dates of death above haven't been verified for accuracy,so take them with a grain of salt.

I live in Minneapolis (Hennepin/Anoka County area). Let me know if I can be of any other help.

Good Luck in your search.
