August (aka Gust) Martenson (aka Martinson, Martens) was born in Sweden in 1881 and died in Sioux Falls, SD in 1942. August was married to Carrie, who was born in Norway in 1886 and died in Sioux Falls, SD in 1941. August worked at the International Harvester Company in Sioux Falls.

August’s brother was Carl Eklund who was born in southern Sweden and immigrated in 1907 to Sioux Falls, SD, then to Minneapolis, MN, then settling in Aitkin County, MN. Carl changed his surname to Eklund when he immigrated. Carl’s Swedish name was also Martenson.

A family album has been passed down from Carl Eklund which contains a picture of August and Carrie Martenson’s grave marker in Sioux Falls. The album has many lovely old pictures, most of them done in portrait studios. Unfortunately, these pictures/portraits are not labeled with any information that would help with identification. We hope that someone in the Martenson/Eklund family will be able to assist in identifying these lovely old pictures.

Please e-mail us at leistiko@mlecmn.net or respond on this board if you can help. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Lu
Hello Previous Forsberg Postings,

I live in Malmo, MN and share your interest in genealogy and history. I found your postings on Rootsweb regarding your Forsberg genealogy but your e-mail addresses are no longer current.

I have a book published by Mrs. Donald Curtis titled “Malmo Centennial 1884 – 1984”. This book is a collection of family histories and includes “Reflections and Recollections of the Forsberg and the Johnson Families of Malmo Township, Aitkin County, Minnesota” written by Ruby Elizabeth (Johnson) Hanson in May, 1984. Ruby’s mother was Jenny Forsberg (daughter of John Peter and Anna Margareta). Ruby wrote one of the longer entries - eight pages and she does know how to “turn a phrase”. Do you have this article? Are your Forsberg relatives related to Jenny? If you don’t have this information then I would be happy to scan those pages and e-mail them to you.

If you are related and have not seen this article – you are in for a real nice surprise. This is really nice. Let me know and I will scan and e-mail this article to you.

Lu

leistiko@mlecmn.net
Burdick- 1880-1900 - Farm Island

Hello- Thought I would post a request for information about
the George Bennett Burdick Family. They were listed in the 1895 census for Farm island. From what I know they moved to Farm Island Township between 1890 and 1895 from Michigan. The returned to Michigan by 1900.

George Burdick B: 1845,Pennsylvania 3rd Wife: Alice May Nichols B: 1868, Indiana

Children:
Milo Addison Burdick B:1892 - Berrian Co, Michigan
Elmer Leroy Burdick (Aka John Murphy, Manistee, MI) B:1893- Berrian Co. Michigan
Wilbur Addison Burdick B:1895- Aitkin Co. MN
Asa Enderds Burdick B: 1896 -Aitkin Co. MN
Daisy Bell Burdick B: 1898- Aitkin Co. MN ( My Great Grandmother) Her father's occupation was listed as lumberman) Her birth info was not in the original birth Register for Aitkin Co. but in a Red Supplimental Book as when SSNs were needed to get a job she had to go back and get a birth certificate. A tip to others from Aitkin County when I went in the county employees did not know of the book, luckily my great uncle who had done previous research mentioned a supplimental book. After a bit of digging they found the book.

Charles Mortimer Burdick (aka Charles Vincient) from one of George's previous marriages also moved to Farm Island.
Charles married Sarah Wagner 1892 while living there and had two sons Austin and Owen Burdick. Charles married again, and had some run in with the law, as well as the mexican army from what I've heard.

I have the information from the 1895 census. I guess I'm asking if anyone has noticed them in any other Aitkin Co. historical documents.
I actually live in Brainerd now. Strange that my parents ended up so close to Aitkin Co 80 years after all these Burdicks left MN.
so Anyone looking for more info about this family or have anymore information you can share please let me know.

POW/MIA Korean War, Aitkin Co. Gresens, Moore

I am searching for the family of two soldiers who was killed in the Korea War. When they entered service they gave Aitkin County, Minnesota as their home of record.

Soldier: ROSSLYN EDWARD GRENSENS
Born:bn 1928
Date of loss: August 11, 1950. MIA

Soldier: ROLAND ALLEN MOORE
Born: 1918, 1920 ?
Date of loss: November 30, 1950. MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 27 families from Minnesota that have not been located. There are two families from Aitkin County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

Roland Moore is on the Urgent List, meaning that there are remains on hand that he is associated with and family DNA is needed to identify or eliminate Moore.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Is any familiar with the family Linde emigrated from Sweden to Nordland township, Aitkin county? John Linde, b. 1825, and his wife Lisbet Göransdotter, b. 1831 emigrated 1892 together with some of their children. One son John, b. 1866 lived in Nordland township. Another son George (or Göran), b. 1871 lived in Glen township. I have also found on daughter Martha, b. 1860, who lived in Glen township in the census 1900 together with her husband, Richard Johnson, b. 1866 in Sweden. The daughter Ingeborg, b. 1869, emigrated much later, around 1906 together with her husband and family. They also lived in Glen township. She was married to John Sundquist, b. 1855.

Thank you so much for any reply.

Magnus Johansson
Kramfors, Sweden
I know that she had a sister, Kiasa who came in abt 1903 with her husband Charley Ruopsa to Meeker Co. MN. I am hoping to find a relative that may know something about Anna and her husband who died bet. 1913 & 1920 in an accident at Cedar Lake Ice Co. in Minneapolis. Thanks!

Did you know that birth records are a vital part of genealogy? Birth records are usually filled out by the parents, but not always filed. Add your ancestors births to the Minnesota birth site. Your information can help out someone looking for a relative.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~mnbirths/minnesota.htm

Hi !

I'm looking for information on Walter O. Edstrom, born June 30, 1894 in Sweden. He married Stephania Petras on May 17, 1930, in Minneapolis, MN.
He died in November 1973 in Aitkin and his wife died January 15, 2001, also in Aitkin. No children or other relatives were mentioned in her obit.
Walters mother (my grandmothers aunt) and father came to Minnesota 1899 or later.
Their given names were Christine Olivia (b. July 27, 1873) and John Olof (b. October 25, 1866) but I cannot find any information about them or possible siblings to Walter.
John Olofs surname in Sweden before they left were 'Edstrom Kerf'.

I am searching for the members of the family of Asahel William Smith (b. 1824 in Chatham Twp, Quebec) and Janet Rorison, many of whom are supposed to have moved to the Brainerd, MN area. Some of their names are John Lindsay Smith (b. 1856), Rev. Walter James Smith (b. 1861), James Rorison Smith (b. 1866), Isaac Newton Smith (b. 1868), and Ezra Reuben Smith (b. 1873). I would very much like to make contact with anyone knowing about this family, in an attempt to fill in missing pieces in a thoroughly wonderful Smith family story which goes back from Quebec into New England, and ultimately back to 16th c. in Scotland via Northern Ireland!

Their daughter BertheMarie (Anderson/Hansen) Pederson (Mrs Englehart Pederson of Greenbush MN) was my great-grandmother. Anders and Karin left the Greenbush area and moved to Aitkin County in the early 1900's with or to be close to (I don't know the reason) another daughter, AnnePetra(Hansen) Carlson. I would like to find out more information about Anders and Karen Hansen. I have copies of their MN death certificates which say they were buried at Fleming Lake Cemetery. Can someone tell me where this is? Also I would like pictures of them if anyone has any and I am also trying to find immigration information. I know they left Norway for England in 1891 but I don't have any info on the England to USA leg of the journey. Any info would be very much appreciated.
Thanks, Nancy

OBITUARY: Aitkin Independent Age, Thursday, March 28, 1918
Mrs. Alura Barton Passes Early Friday - She Was One of the Pioneer Residents of Aitkin.

Mrs. Alura Barton, wife of Mr. Henry Barton of Aitkin, passed away early last Friday morning. Mrs. Barton had been in failing health for several months, and a couple of weeks ago she was taken to Duluth for treatment. Physicians found, however, that she was suffering from cancer of the liver, and held out no hope for her recovery, and on the 19th inst. she was brought home. About two o'clock last Friday morning she awakened and one of her daughters attending her asked if there was anything she wanted. She answered in the negative and in a twinkling she had passed from earth.

Mrs. Barton was born in Maine fifty-seven years ago, and had been a resident of Aitkin for thirty-seven years. For many years she conducted a boarding house in Aitkin, but a few years ago she and Mr. Barton acquired a nice little farm on the banks of Pickerel Lake, west of town, and she had since lived there.

Besides the husband who is left, Mrs. Barton is survived by four daughters, viz., Mrs. John Donaldson and Mrs. A. L. Horn of Whitefish, Montana, Mrs. Corbin Youngs of Shovel Lake and Mrs. Arthur Noeske of Winona, all of whom, with Mr. Donaldson and Mr. Youngs, were present at the funeral.
She also leaves her aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Clough, besides three sisters and four brothers, viz., Mrs. James Skelly of Cohasset, Mrs. Frank Allen of St. Paul, Mrs. Joseph Pera of Ashland, Wis., and Harland, Lenwood,
Arthur and John Clough of Aitkin.

Mrs. Donaldson and Mrs. Horn came on from Montana some time ago and with tender solicitude nursed their mother through most of her illness.

The funeral was held from the Methodist church on Tuesday afternoon, services being conducted by Rev. C. C. Sutton, an old friend and acquaintance of the family of pioneer days, and the remains were laid away in Lakeview cemetery
Luther was the sheriff of Aiken Village/Township in 1920, as is accounted for in the 1920 census.
I am also wondering what cemeteries are in Aiken Village/Township, where they may be buried? I would like to check out these cemeteries if I get up to the area soon.
Thanks much, Julie

Morgan O. Nicholson was born 6/15/1893 and died in Aitkin County on 12/9/1965. I located his obituary at the Aitkin County Historical Society but the newspaper copy is of very poor quality and I'm having difficulty reading the copy. I will probably have to go back and check the microfilm and try to transcribe the document. One line reads: "Mr. Nicholson helped design and develop the first gasoline tractor in the United States." He was a sportsman, a Lutheran, a WWI Veteran and an engineer. Sounds like an interesting man.

I also located the high school yearbook picture of Frankie Mae. Please e-mail me and I will send you a copy.

Lu

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~maggiebakke/minneso...
Aitkin County, Minnesota
Edward Carlsen from Smaalenene was the first Norwegian in the area of Dorris, where there is a little Norwegian settlement, established in the 1890s. Further south in the direction of Opstead, there were two families who settled about the same time, namely Reier Bakke and George Arnesen. Cedar Lake congregation, that was established at Dorris by Pastor Ole Dahle in 1896 of The Lutheran Free Church, was the first Norwegian congregation in Aitkin County. The church was built in 1900. Now there are two Norwegian churches and three congregations in this county, 2 of the congregations belonging to The Lutheran Free church and 1 to The Norwegian Synod.
The first Norwegian to hold a public office in the county was Ole R. Mousten from Sogn, he was elected as Sheriff in 1892. Later (in 1898) he was elected as a member of the State Legislature.
Tronnes was the name of a post office that once existed in Aitkin County. The post offices Erick and Jacobson exist now, but it is doubtful they are of Norwegian origin. The Swedish population is clearly larger than the Norwegian in Aitkin County.
Translated by: Olaf Kringhaug
Vernon, British Columbia, Canada
All material on this page was translated by Olaf Kringhaug from Norwegian .
My grandfather was Lloyd H Cornish, son of Milo F Cornish. I am planning a trip for my mother to visit for the first time, her parent's birth places. I was told the cabin my grandfather was born in is still standing in a park in Aitkin County. Her mother was Irma Catherine Mortiz, a school teacher before marriage. We will be coming by Amtrak in last April next year. Any suggestions on where to start, where to stay etc would be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking for descendents of Fred Bowman & Ella Lord Bowman. They lived in Logan Township, Aitken County from at least 1910 - 1930. They probably lived there before and after those dates, but I haven't found them in the records yet. Fred is listed in two census documents as having come from New Jersey. Ella came from Wisconsin. Both were born in 1860.

They had an adopted son or a step son (couldn't read the census-taker's writing) named Peter, who was 18 in 1920, making him born about 1902. He has a last name that starts with what looks like an M, but I can't read the census-taker's writing.

In the 1930 Census, Ella is living with Peter. I still can't read his last name. It looks a bit like Mayston, or Maystok, or some such.

Any descendents interested, please contact me, on the board or off.

Sherry Lord
I'm trying to find out more information on this group who emigrated from New Brunswick, Canada, in the 1880s. One group settled in Douglas Co., WI, and others pushed on to Aitkin Co., MN.

I'm especially interested in a John W. Thompson, b. abt. 1870 in Canada, d. 1926, and was buried at Greenwood Cem. in Superior. His wife was Lucy, who died in 1955, is also buried in Greenwood. Their son or grandson, Kermit L. (1919-1963) is buried there, as well.

Any information on this family and their descendants would be gratefully appreciated.

Aitkin County Cemeteries

I've discovered my great-great grandparents owned a farm in Aitkin County. They apparently lived in the Rice River Township. Can anyone tell me what cemeteries are in that area? I can't find death certs. or anything on them and I want to see if they are buried in a cemetery in that area. There names were Israel Dickson and Mary Kurvinen-Dickson (Dixon). They both came from Finland.

William A. Aitkin "Fur Trader"
I am trying to locate the burial site of William A. Aitkin.
Was told recently that he was buried on the east side of the Mississippi River, somewhere near Swan River (near the site of present day Little Falls, MN. Does he have a marker or is he buried in a cemetary? I know that his Father In Law "Chief Hole in The Day" is buried in Little Falls, MN, On a hill top. Heard that in 1847 (?) they were living near each other. Mr Aitkin's daughter Childa Aitkin, Henry, was my Great Grandmother. Any suggestions where to find a site on the net that might have early information for MN. Thank You
