Captains James B Brown, John William Brown, and father William Brown

According to The Past and present of Lake County, Illinois : containing a history of the county--its cities, towns, &c., a biographical dire, James B. Brown left Clayton, NY as a sailor in 1837 (age 13), was promoted to mate at age 19 (c.1843),sailed as a mate for 2 terms, came to Chicago in 1844 and became a captain. He retired in Lake County in 1864.

His brother, John William Brown, is also listed as a "Lakes Captain" in Ancestry.com family trees. He is listed on the 1840 Census in Racine, Wisconsin as a mariner.

According to Brown family records, their father, William Brown (1786-1838) drowned in the St. Lawrence River off Clayton, NY on 9 Sep 1838.

Since both of William's sons became became lakes captains, I'd like to know if he was also in the GL shipping trade, and if his drowning might have been a shipwreck.

I'd love to find the names of the vessels for James and John, and William (if applicable).

MOSES STONE & LIZA/LIZZY(ELIZABETH?) w/issue; John, Rosa, Louisa, Alex, Joseph, George & William.
ELiza's death doc, d. 10 APR 1921,Tecumseh, Essex Canada, lists pts as ANTOINE LEMIRE & MARGUERITE (DALY).Uncertain of b. APR 1836/39? Moses's death doc, d. 25 NOV 1925, Tecumseh, Essex Canada, is w/o pts. Only known date for b. JUN 1839?
The other info is from CA Census' 1891,1901, 1911 having the family in Maidstone. I have tried to search for a marriage doc without success. The Stone name was apparently chgd from?....sound/x 'Larooo' (per GGrandmother Hebert) and I have tried various spellings. I've also searched for oldest childs birthcert. and assume he, John, was born in Detroit MI as the following 2 sib(s) no luck. I have found both Moses and John in web references as Captains on the great lakes, however. I can't find Moses' origin and Eliza leaves alot of questions if she was M. E. Lemire early CA Census'(1851/1860)
Any guidance/advice/relation ?

Colleen

P.S.

The more you get into genealogy, the more often you will find errors in information. Perhaps the person just hit the wrong number, or perhaps he/she made it up - or anything in between. When you get information from sources other than primary sources (birth certificates, death registrations, etc etc) you need to look at it as a possible sign post to your family, not as FACTS. Even with primary sources, there can be errors (somebody typed in a wrong date, a grave stone has the wrong date on it, etc) so it is suggested that you find about three different sources for your information. Use the sign posts, but back them up with your own research. Grandma or Aunt Susie - or Ancestry.com - may have it wrong. It is really annoying to follow a lead, then find that it's not your family that you have been following. You DEFINITELY need to double check Capt William WILKINS' information. Certainly an error there somewhere.

I have been doing a lot of Geneology lately, and I followed a line to a Capt Willim Wilkins, but the person who linked me the research, I think, was a bit flawed. He/she had the Capt born around 1660, with his son, Thomas Wilkins, being born in 1810. Obviously, there is a flaw there, but most of the names seem to be similar. Do you think there may be a chance there is a relation to your post and the line I am researching, or do you think it may be the work of someone who decided to "spice things up" a bit and just throw some names in there? Thank you.

Anna's name was actually Hannah LaChance, her parents are listed as Peter LaChance and Rose Guyot. I wonder though if Hannah was adopted though, the reason being when Rose filed for a pension from serving in the Civil War, on some of the documents say that Rose and Peter never had any living children and on a census I think 1900 Rose is living in Alpena, MI and the census record says she had 5 children and none of them are living this was when Hannah was still alive. Anyway I would like to hear from you. Lana

Capt. William B. MORLEY, capitalist, is a native of New York State, and was born Poultneyville, Wayne County, New York on January 18, 1832.
He began sailing when only fourteen years of age, on schooner Eclipse, and three years later, when only nineteen years of age, was master of the Free Trader.
He also sailed as master of several other sail and steam vessels. He continued in the marine service until 1868. During that time, he was engaged in ship-building and fitting out new vessels.
In 1869, he came to Marine City, and since then has resided there, and has been engaged in ship-building and investing in vessel interests.
Capt. MORLEY has been identified with marine interests for one-third of a century. He has in his library a fine model of a sip, constructed by himself during his boyhood. He has a set of Scott Russel's Naval Architecture, a rare work, there being besides only two other sets in the State.

In his vessel interests, he has been connected with this brother, John J. MORLEY, of Rochester, N.Y., C. T. MORLEY, of Cleveland, Ohio, and M. H. MORLEY, of Sodus Point, during the past twenty-seven years.
Capt. MORLEY has served President of the village, and has held other town and school offices.
He married Miss Abbie PAYNE, of Wayne County, N.Y., in January, 1855. She died in 1873, leaving three sons-H. Throop, William H. and Lawrence M.
In 1877, he married Miss Elizabeth PRESTON, of Sodus Point, Wayne Co., N.Y.
They have two children-Florence M. and Mary P. pg. 704 Cottrellville Twp/Marine City

SOURCE: History of St Clair County, Michigan.
Great Lakes Seaman

My maternal grandfather, Joseph John Scharf, sailed the Great Lakes in the mid 1920s (two of the photographs I have are dated 1924 and 1925). I can recall him saying several times that he had served as Purser at some point and that he had assisted a female passenger who had been rather badly injured during rough weather. I am wondering if his name appears on any lists that someone may have or give some suggestions as to where I could start looking. Would really like to learn more about this rather interesting sojourn in my grandfather's life

That's interesting..that is one I didn't hear of...Chryslers. I am actually trying to verify family folklore. My grandfather was a captain on the Great Lakes and the story was the Model T's to save the crew. Would make a great story if it were true...but I'd rather verify it first! I know his ships and years, but haven't found anything to substantiate this story. City of Bangor was not one of his.

Can anyone out there tell me how to become a seaman on the Great Lakes and Oceans. I'm 21 years old and almost have an associates degree and I love the idea of working on the these merchant ships. I am not looking to be an officer, just a seaman with a chance at later knowledge and promotions.
Thanks,
I just read your post about Captain John Bowen.
Captain Daniel Francis Bone was my great grandfather, born in Nova Scotia. He was born in 1839, his parents were Francis Bone and Margaret Donovan from Ireland. Captain Bone lived in Buffalo and sailed the Great Lakes. He married Sarah Ryan, and they had three children: Mary, Sarah, and my grandfather John Francis … who was a brick mason. Captain Bone died in 1895, and is buried at Our Lady of Victory Cemetery, in Lackawanna, NY. We saw church records where his name was spelled Bowen and other ways. If any of this information matches, my email address is tate1946@gmail.com.
jt
Songs of the Great Lakes

Charlevoix, Michgan, July 20, 1932
Sam Rose (AKA Capt. S.M. ROSE, my g gf) was in his barbershop by a bridge over the channels, and is about seventy-nine (sic - in 1932 Sam would have been age 70). His father was lost in the Civil War, and his mother married a Lakes sailor and she went as cook, and he as a "boy" at age nine. He was a mate for his stepfather at sixteen and continued sailing for more than fifty years. He carried lumber from Muskegon and nearby ports to Chicago and later from more distant ports. He heard much singing among sailors: "Skillagalee" and "Wobble Shanks", "It Was in the Year 1801", "Louis Sands", "Fair Fanny Moore", "Foreman Young Monroe", "Law and Danforth", "The Lady of the Lakes", "Annie M. Peterson". They had two Swedes in their crew for several years who sang sailor songs in broken English a great deal. Rose could not recall words of any of their songs. "I've been barbering for the last twenty years, and haven't thought of any of those old songs all that time. I used to like hearing them."

From Songquest: the Journals of Great Lakes folklorist Ivan H. Walton
By Ivan Walton, Joe Grimm

Note: Captain Simon Mason ROSE was born in Casco Twp, Allegan County Michigan in 1862 to Mason ROSE and Sibble REED. His father died in the final days of the Civil War in Chattanooga. His mother remarried in 1867 to James A. DIXON. If he was a sailor, I am unaware of it. He was listed as a farmer in the 1870 census. If there was a subsequent marriage, I am not aware of it. Who was Sam's step-father who taught him to pilot on the Great Lakes?

George Thomas Benjamin Duering

I am writing in response to the inquiry made in 2000 by Helen Trudgeon. I tried to email her, but it was no longer a valid address...if anyone knows how to get ahold of her, that would be great!

Helen's original note:
I'm new to this list so have a few questions. Does anyone have records of crew members of ships on the Great Lakes in the early 1900s? I'm looking for one George Thomas Benjamin Duering. We know he was on the Great Lakes in 1910-11 when he docked at Detroit. There he met his wife, Hazel Hawkins, at a party and married her.

My Response:
Thomas Benjamin Duering was my Great-Grandfather. He dropped using "George" and was known by Tommy. In fact, we didn't know about his name George until after Hazel died in 1987. He is buried (under Thomas Duering) in Mt Avon Cemetery in Rochester, Michigan, next to his wife, Hazel Helena Hawken Duering Rollet. They married Aug 31, 1912 and had two children, Edward (my grandpa) and Marvin. I have lots of pictures, stories and memories as Hazel lived to be 101. I was a child when she died. Tommy died in 1935 after being struck by a hit and run driver leaving work.

I would love to speak with you to share any additional information you are looking for and to learn how you know of my Great Grandparents and anything else you might know about them or Tommy's relatives (I've hit a brick wall). I was just asking if anyone in the family knew how they met, and I found the answer here!

Please email me at jodysabra@yahoo.com

At least one of his sons, Sylvester, who lived in Buffalo, was involved with ships on the Great Lakes -- he is listed as a chief engineer on a "freight boat" in the 1910 US Census. Supposedly his brother, Vincent, my great-grandfather, was a captain of at least one ship, but I've not been able to verify it yet.
Frank Bennett -- Great Lakes sailor?

Hello everyone,

I have reason to believe that my great-grandfather, Frank BENNETT, may have been a sailor on the Great Lakes in the 1870s-1880s.

Every record I have on Frank Bennett says that he was born in Detroit, Michigan; the exact year is in question, but probably around 1861. He lived most of his adult life in Missouri, where he married my great-grandmother. The first actual record I have for him is when he showed up in Missouri in 1885 to enlist in the Army. On the 1885 enlistment record, Frank's previous occupation is listed as "sailor". The same previous occupation is also listed in Frank's pension file (I have most of Frank's military papers).

Since there is no indication that Frank lived anywhere near an ocean before he came to Missouri, and since he was born in Michigan, the logical conclusion is that he was a sailor on the Great Lakes. But I have absolutely no clue where to look for any records of Frank Bennett as a sailor, or even if any such records would exist. I believe he was working as a sailor in the early 1880s, perhaps the late 1870s as well.

I don't know if this matters but I also want to mention that in Frank's military papers is a detailed physical description and the man had a lot of tattoos on his chest, back, and arms. Which also kind of screams "sailor" to me and suggests he had been a sailor for many years.

Frank Bennett has been the worst brick wall in all of my family research. I am desperate for ANY information I can find about his life in Michigan before he came to Missouri. If there is any chance at all that I can get even the slightest tidbit of information about the time Frank spent as a sailor on the Great Lakes -- if any kind soul out there can offer a suggestion or point me in a direction -- I would be extremely grateful.

Thank you.

-Barbara Connors

The R. G. Peters was lost by fire in the early morning hours of 12/2/1882. The crew members that have been identified as lost with the Peters are: Henry Ruse, Chief Cook; Henry Henryson, Watchman; Sivert Hansom, deckhand; Hans T. L. Arsen, deckhand; Adolphe Christian, deckhand; John Swanson, deckhand; and (Captain) John Larsen, First Mate. I have seen no information on the remaining six casualties.

Where can I find a list of the 13 member crew that was aboard the Steam Barge "R. G. Peters" that caught fire and went down in heavy seas about 35 miles off the coast of Milwaukee, Wisconsin in early December, 1882?
The articles I found give the captain's name as Charles Smith. All but one of crew called Manistee, Michigan home.
The article states the second engineer was a man named FINAN, but does not give his given name. I am sure this man is an ancestor of my husband and I would like to know his full name.

Toledo Blade on Dec. 31, 1974

Obituary - Michael Toth, 59, of 1109 Wheeling St. Oregon, owner of a former sand dredging firm
that also was the only local firm to operate cargo ships, died Monday, December 30, 1974 in St.
Charles Hospital.

Mr. Toth operated the former Toth Transportation Co. in the 2000 block of Front St. for 20
years. He retired 4 years ago.

His shipping activity around Toledo began in 1937, when he acquired a bumboat to sell supplies
to sailors on Great Lakes vessels. In 1948, his firm entered the sand dredging business,
selling sand and gravel to commercial firms.

In its first venture into cargo carrying, the firm purchased two vessels to carry grain to
ports in New York state and through the New York barge canal. They became the first Toledo
based cargo-handling shipping firm since the days of old wooden canal boats.

In June 1958, one of the Toth vessels, the Julius H. Barnes, unloaded a 2,000 ton cargo of
sugar from Havana at Muskegon, MI, thus becoming one of the first American flag vessels to
bring cargo into the Great Lakes from an overseas port.
Mr. Toth was a member of the Propeller Club, Shipmasters Association, and Pyramid Lodge, F&AM.

Surviving are his sons, Michael A. Jr. and Mark J. sisters, Mrs. Helen Katona, Mrs. Mary
Krizsak, Mrs. Ann Galuzny, and Mrs. Irene Kornstadt and brothers Joseph and John.
Services Thursdays in Eggleston-Meinert Mortuary, Coy Rd. by Rev. Andrew Harto, Masonic
services 8pm Wednesday. Burial - Toledo Memorial Park.

The Captain of the George King was Hector Brown in 1909 and H. Huyser in 1910 and 1911. The Chief Engineer of the George King was William Flanigan in 1909 and John Conley in 1910 and 1911.

The liklihood of getting any more detailed crew information on the George King is very remote. Prior to the 1910 - 1915 time frame, there was no requirement to generate or keep crew lists. Individuals signed on to the Ship's Articles and were paid directly by the Captain. Most of these log books have been lost over tiime.

The George King was owned and operated by M. Sicken of Marine City, Michigan. Sicken went out of business around 1912. The George King was operated by S. C. McClouth of Marine City in 1912 and William Sharp of Bay City in 1913 - 1918. Perhaps, if you get lucky, you might find some more information in the Marine City and Bay City newspaper archives.

Steamer Geo King

AM wondering if I can find any Crew lists for the Steamer Geo King which transported Lumber from Minnesota to Michigan. My Grandfather was a crew member in 1909-1910 for sure. His name was Andrew Anderson. He came from Norway in 1904 so he could have been as early as 1905 and by 1920 he was working for the railroad. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks Jan Smith

I have received no reply here, however in December '09 Port Stanley, Ontario held a 100 year memorial service. My cousin Patrick McLeod, great grand son of First mate John McLeod and I attended (in kilts of course!). Two ladies descended from one of the crewmen also attended. It was a very moving experience.

The ship still has not been found.

If you could pass along your contact info, I'll let you know if I hear anything

Bob McLeod rmcleod17 at comcast.net
