You are correct, Pat. It was German Evangelical Luthern Church that became the United Church of Christ. When the German's came to America they kept what was in Germany. The King joined the two protestant Church's but they did not have the same views of baptism and whether the wine was really the blood of Christ or just a symbal, so they split and formed new Church's. It happened in Taylor, MI. St Paul United Church of Christ has the records of the split in their record book. Pastor Charles Haass married my ancestor Pastor Hugo Schaarschmidt and his wife Ida Koeppen in Detroit at St. John-St. Luke Evangelical Church.4 Sep 1889
