John COOKE, a well-known pioneer resident of Van Buren County, died at the home of his son in Porter Township, Tuesday, November 22, aged 84 years.
He was born in Lincolnshire, England, August 27, 1826 and came to this country in 1851, coming to Van Buren County the same year. He was known throughout his life as an industrious, generous and public-spirited citizen, courting no man's favor and fearing no man's frown. He was one of the men who organized the Republican Party in 1854 but later left that party and was a Democrat the remainder of his days. A great reader, he was always well informed on the topics of the day. Of unusual rugged and robust health up to a few weeks ago, he was all his days of a man among men, respected and esteemed by a large circle of friends.
Funeral services were held at the Porter Church.
