Died Sunday afternoon, March 22, 2009 at her home with family and friends at her side. She was born September 8, 1941 in Paw Paw, the daughter of the late Grant O. Root and Pearl V. (Easterling) Root. Betty was a graduate of Paw Paw High School Class of 1959. For years Betty was a loving wife and mother that stayed at home to raise her two children. For the past 16 years she has been the office manager with the Southwestern Community Action Agency, Benton Harbor. She enjoyed gardening, spending time with her children and grandchildren, special friends, golfing and bingo. She would do anything to love and enjoy family, friends and life. Grandma loved spending time with her two grandchildren "the boys." Her nickname for them was "Charlie Brown and McGee"! Also surviving are her two children, T. Michael (Joy) Hartman of Paw Paw and Renata L. Hartman of Kalamazoo; her two grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Hartman. She has three brothers, Robert G. Root of Tavares, FL, Jack (Patti) Root of Coloma, MI, and Steven Root of Brooklyn, NY. She is also survived by her step-mother, Joann Root of Paw Paw; brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Judy Schincariol of Paw Paw, and many nieces and nephews. She also had a special friendship and sisterhood with the "HAGS" which stands for: Happy Aging Gals Socializing. They consist of life long friends Mary Ann Terry, Gladys Thompson, Gerry VanGalder and "HAG" honoree Gertrude Sousley. The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 25, from 5-8 PM at the Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 26, at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Paw Paw, with the Rev. Fr. Stanley Witek, celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Paw Paw. Memorial contributions may be made to FAAN (Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network) for her loving grandson, Matthew to combat and research food allergies or to the Multiple Sclerosis Society for her loving son, Michael.
