I’m not related to any member of this family.

1940 is the last available census at this time.

Census records do not record the specific locality of a person's birth. Only the state or country name was recorded. Same info applies in most cases for death certs.

My mother was employed at Higer's in 1930. She is in a group photo that was taken outside the store. A sign was held up by some of the employee's that said "Join the Marine's - 3rd floor. Does anybody know where this store was located? I tried a search engine with no luck. Perhaps Higer was spelled differently.

Re: PFC John T. GLEASON - 116th Infantry Regiment - 29th Infantry Division.

I found a bit more info on PFC Gleason, 2 brief items in a database compiled by a veteran of the 115th Inf Regiment
"Gleason	John	T	36570025	Pfc	HqCo1Bn116	13-Jun-44	fr repl depot to dy 116	HqCo1Bn
----
Gleason	John	T	36570025	Pfc	HqCo1Bn116	3-Jul-44	fr dy to KIA 13 June 116	HqCo1Bn"
Found here: http://www.angelfire.com/md/29division/page22.html
The database is an Excel file about 6 megabytes in size. From the source page "Every company, battery, or troop in the 29th Infantry Division compiled a daily "Morning Report" indicating personnel changes over the preceding 24-hour period. The information collected in these reports is crucial to the modern researcher because it includes a compilation of company members who were killed, wounded, injured, ill, promoted, or transferred. Furthermore, the arrival of fresh replacements and men returning to the unit after hospital stays or temporary transfers are also listed.

Thanks to Ralph Windler, a former member of Company G, 115th Infantry, the Morning Reports of the 116th Infantry during the 29th Division's period in combat have been fully compiled in an Excel spreadsheet. To view this compilation, click on the link below. NOTE: You must have Microsoft Excel installed on your computer, preferably version 2003 or later, to view this spreadsheet. Members of the 116th Infantry who served in combat from June 1944 to May 1945 are listed alphabetically. Every effort has been made to ensure accuracy in this list, but information on the original cards was occasionally inaccurate, and even worse, on occasion entries were illegible."
I don't know the exact meaning of the abbreviations used in these morning reports. My best guess is that PFC Gleason was assigned to the headquarters company of the 1st Battalion 116th Infantry Regiment 13 June 1944 from a replacement depot and KIA the same day. If anyone has better information, please post it.

John Drennan was born in Ireland, in 1834. It is unclear to us when he emigrated to Canada. He married Prospina Sheldon and had several children, including James A. Drennan. James married Euretta Jane Holmes. At some point around 1940, James Drennan joined the gold rush leaving his children, Harry and Grace in Michigan with his parents. It is possibly family lore that Euretta died during or sometime after Grace was born. We have been unable to locate documentation supporting her death, ANYWHERE. it is speculated that she was overwhelmed having been married young and all but abandoned by her husband and left the family. Again this is thus far speculation. We are attempting to locate any documentation supporting either theory. We are aware that Harry met his father John on a train and it is believed not to have gone well.

Hi,

This message is years old and I wonder if you will actually get this response but...

I wonder how you connect James Purdy to Francis and StillJohn?

I think that this James Purdy may well be the son of Caleb Purdy of Cramahe. He names his first son Caleb which strengthens my case. Caleb came from Westchester Co., New York and was in Coxsackie Green County, New York from at least 1787-1790. In 1795 he is in Upper Canada, first Hamilton Twp and then Cramahe. He has sons Gibert, James, Nathaniel, John and Caleb and a sixth son either David or Richard born in Canada about 1805.

Would like to talk more about this with you. If you do get this message please contact me directly....

hermanjl@comcast.net

Thanks,
Linda Herman

I agree with Michael that most people traveling to St. Clair Co. in the 1840's traveled by water via the Erie Canal and the Great Lakes; however, it was possible to take a land route through Ontario (Canada West) as well. It would have been more arduous and the area sparsely settled but pioneers did travel that way by wagon, horseback and foot, and crossed the St. Clair River into Michigan by ferry or flatboat. It was also possible to travel by water through Ontario using the Thames River and the Sydenham River. The city of London, Ontario, was pretty well settled at that date and would make a good jumping off point for the wilderness between it and Michigan, now about an hour's drive by car.

We can move this to WELLS message board.

It appears his grandson, Marshall, had several male descendants. If you can find a "living male Wells" who is descended from Marshall hopefully he would participate in the WELLS Surname DNA Study. That would narrow down which DNA Family Justus is descended from. The more I find about him, he may be connected to the same DNA Family as Thomas WELLES, the 4th Governor of CT.

Bonita
ladybonita@usa.com

The date on the left is Mar 1, 1926.... 20 years after his death.
If it's the Justus Welles born 1851, then he was only a young teenager when he went to war.
If this really is him, then the person trying to get the pension may have been his second wife... I've begun corresponding with newly found cousins. The story is his new wife took everything he had after he died, then left town.
Or maybe this is an entirely different Justus Welles Jr.
It looks like there are several of them.
Thanks for helping.
Becky

The first thing I would do is to get a copy of his application for a Civil War Pension. It states he is a "JR"
and an "INVALID". The originals are in the NARA in Washington DC. (If you need someone to get it for you, I will give you the name of the gal I use, she normally can gget in a couple of weeks and her rates are normallly less than the NARA directly.)

Name: WELLS, Justus P JR.
Svs: Co. B 1st Terrell(?) Regiment US Voluntary Infantry
Appl #: 1533042
Cert: A-6-28-26
Filed in California on 1 Mar ... year unreadible

I will keep looking

Bonita

You have several posts on this Welles message board. I would really appreciate your help. I will list what I know and what I've come across through censuses and other people's trees.

My father's mother's mother (my great grandmother):
Florence Russell Welles born 19 Mar 1879 S. Carolina
her father:
Justus Phillip (J.P.) Welles born Oct 1851 New York
he married Mary Browne. She contracted Tuberculosis so they moved to Arizona to help her condition. He became a bookkeeper and worked for U.S. Marshalls while there. He remarried after Mary's death from T.B.
That move kept our family branch to the west, eventually to Calif.
That's what I know.

I found several other Justus (Justis, Justice, Justies) in Conn, NY, Wisc. through censuses.
One older relative said that Justus Wells born around 1804 in Oneida Co, New York.
I'm using him in my tree, but I want to be sure. I see him married to Sarah Flint.
So, if true then
his father per someone's family tree was:
Christopher Wells- 11 Mar 1760 Wethersfield, Hartford, Conn, who married Sarah Montague (he was 30 years older tha her, so I think this is not correct info).
His ancestors per other family tree:
Joseph Wells 1720 Conneticut married Mary Robbins
Joseph Wells 1860 Conneticut married Hannah Robbins

I really want to be correct.
So if you can find the definite link down to my Justus Phillip Welles born 1851, that would be awesome.
Even if not, then whatever you think about that Christopher Wells possible ancestor ... would help me also.
And anyone else who scomes across this thread on message board.
It is confuing with generations using the same name, variations of spelling names and that Wells/Welles, and even misspelled Welles - like the one I came across "Mells".
Thank you so much
Becky

Thomasker:

Not exactly sure why you responded with this message the way you did ... but it is always good to have a reminder. I always find that positive supportive messages will promote a great 'genealogy code' ... sharing bits of information, you never know who you may help.

As an addition re: censs records, the early records true will only give you head of house but it will give you a 'range' to their approximate birth year ... and it does allow you to match known children to the 'hen scratches' for household members. The problem comes in when more than one family is living together. Worst case, it will tell you the family's migration. the Pre-1850 records should never be ignored. It might also be added is that the information on ANY census is only as good as the 1) person providing the information and 2) the literacy of the enumerator and his/her ability to get ALL of the families and not skip any houses.

Actually, I do have bible records and have also traced this family since my 2004 message.

Since my WELLS/WELLES are from CT, VT, NH, NY and OH ... one never knows who may be researching a leg of the family and have some 'family' information that will tie all the information together.

Bonita

My main focus will be at the library I think, maybe go to the courthouse to do some research & find some birth records. I don't know what help the Register of Deeds will be, what kind of information will I find on that. Also, hoping to make it to one cemetery at least.

Thanks for the information on the restaurant. :)

Sherry,

Congratulations!

With the hours you have available, if your ancestor owned property, the Register of Deeds office would be the place to start. The deed would give place of residence which hopefully would be where he came from.

The library there has a very good index file of newspapers. You may also want to just go through the newspapers covering the time period you are interested in.

The library may also have family files available. You may want to have a Family Group Sheet made out to leave there with your contact information.

There used to be a good restaurant on top of the bank building on the river. We haven't been in several years, but the food and the VIEW were wonderful.

Answers to your questions... :)

Why are you planning a trip? My husband & I are celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary, I've always wanted to go to Port Huron because that is where my great grandfather was born, and hubby has agreed to this :)

Is it for just research, or to see highlights of the city? both

If for research, is there a specific name or family? Vincent, James

Have you done any background work on them? Yes and everything leads back to Port Huron, but I'm stuck there.

Do you want to go to the courthouse? Library? Cemeteries? Yes, yes, yes

Are you going to be there for more than one day so that you need to know where restaurants and motels are? two days, we have a hotel picked out already

Are you on a time limit? Sorta Friday all day, and part of Saturday - coming home Sunday morning

When do you expect to go? March 22-24

There are a lot of ideas. Some questions to help.

Why are you planning a trip? Is it for just research, or to see highlights of the city?

If for research, is there a specific name or family?

Have you done any background work on them?

Do you want to go to the courthouse? Library? Cemeteries?

Are you going to be there for more than one day so that you need to know where restaurants and motels are?

Are you on a time limit?

When do you expect to go? If it will include cemeteries, you may want to wait until close to Memorial Day because most cemeteries are muddy and the Sexton's have them cleaned up by the holiday.

The court house and library have set hours, but if you need to contact someone about locating burials, you may have to contact the townships prior to your trip.

I have done this frequently, especially when I will be some distance from home. It helps to make every precious minute count and makes for a more productive trip.

Good luck.

The newspaper report on the 1883 reunion indicates that Louisa Maxson(Conat) IS the daughter of Priscilla Conat and Abram Maxson. Never found a record of it. Newspaper report is only "proof" I've ever found
Census: Columbus Twp., St Clair cty., Michigan 1870 census
Livingston, Robert 38 (b. 1832)
Louisa 27 (b. 1843)
Abram 11 (b. 1859)
Mary 7 (b. 1863)
Henry 5 (b. 1865)
Susan 1 (b. 1869)

Census: Columbus Twp., St Clair cty., Michigan 1880 census
Livingston, Robert 48 (b. 1832)
Louisa 37 (b. 1843)
Abram 21 (b. 1859 - 1931)
Henry 15 (b. 1865 - 1941)
Joseph (b. 1867 - 1868) * 1 yrs 8 mos 20 Day @ Death - not in census)
Susan 11 (b. 1869 - 1947)
Purlie (Prescilla) 8 (b. 1872 - 1955)
Robert 6 (b. 1874 - ? )
Sarah 3 (b. 1877 - ? )
Willie (William) 1 (b. 1879 - ? )
Annie (b. 186x ? - not in 1880 census)

BIOGRAPHY:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Taken from Port Huron Daily Times 3/8/1883
(St. Clair Republican)
A somewhat remarkable party of Columbus Township people were in St. Clair on
Tuesday, last being five members of a family each representing a generation.
The oldest member of the party was Mrs. Conant, 81 years of age, a well
preserved and active lady. Email me at krodegeb@earthlink.net

Louisa (Maxon or Maxson) Livingston is my great-great maternal grandmother, and in reply to an earlier post, yes she is a Conat (Conant) descendent.

I am wondering what route was common for immigrants in St. Clair County. Did many people come through Canada? or from New York?

Thanks,
Laura K.

Mary Livingston is the wife of my great grand uncle: Rufus Snyder from Columbus St Clair. Willard F. Snyder, the brother of Rufus, was my Great grandfather. I am looking for any information connecting Willard and Rufus to their father Peter Snyder (1818-1899) and their mother Malissa (Melissa)Janette (Jennette) Babcock-Snyder. Peter's father born @1780 (best guess) was David Snyder so any information connecting Peter to David would be appreciated - thanks!

Cheryl
