Micofilm copies of the Manistique Pioneer Tribune are at the Manistique School and Public Library. They have copies dating back to the early 1880's through the 1920's. There are some gaps however. They also have some editions of the Manistique Courier from the late 1890's. Death records can be obtained from the office of the Schoolcraft County Clerk which is across the street from the High School. Lakeview Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Manistique and is located on the hill just north of the hospital and medical care facility. You might also want to check out the genealogy trails website for Schoolcraft County: http://genealogytrails.com/mich/schoolcraft. Hope you find the information you are looking for and have a great trip.

I'm not related.

Schoolcraft county is located in Michigan's Upper Penninsula. Manistique is the largest city & probably the county seat.

Call ahead and inquire if they permit public browsing of vital records. Some counties do not permit this.

Pack WINTER clothes!

Where are the best places in Schoolcraft county to look at old newspaper microfilms, look up births, deaths, marriages and things like that?

Hello Everyone,
I am looking to do a research exchange. I live in Alexandria, VA and can do research in Fairfax County, VA, Arlington County, VA, the City of Alexandria, the National Archives and the Library of Congress. In exchange I am looking for any information available about Eli Grandmont who married Margaret McCarthy in 1871 in Onota, Schoolcraft County, MI. They had one daughter, Mary, about 1871 or 1872 and a son who was stillborn in 1874. Margaret died in 1875 in Onota. They were married by MA Fox, a Catholic priest and lived in Onota. Any information you could find about land they may have owned, Margaret's burial, Mary's birth or really anything about Eli would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if you are interested - labuhnk@hotmail.com
Thanks,
Katherine

Northwoodsnormy aka Karen Gould Norman......I have been trying to find a way to connect with you. I see that you have added all of the McManus pictures that I have put on my site...McManus/Parks family tree but you have also pulled some wrong information that I would like to correct...my grandfather, Timothy Thaddeus McManus was married to Mary Ann Murphy Farrell (her second marriage, first husband Matthew Farrell). The one census lists the Farrell children, Ellen Farrell, John Farrell and Patrick J. Farrell as "McManus" but the only McManus' in that line is my grandfather, Thomas James McManus and his sister, Mary Bridget McManus. If you wish, I can give you additional information or you can go to the McManus/Parks family tree that is a public record. Theresa McManus Neville, Manistique

I am seeking any clues or information about them and or the origins of this family in Ireland.

Hi Karen,
I'm desperately trying to locate info on my Gundersen(Gunderson)line. I've been trying to locate a copy of the book as I'm researching Gundersen,Riley,Kokesh,Benwill(Benwell)& Jacobs and all are from Schoolcraft county. I'm specifically looking for an Indian connection with the Gundersen's. Great grandmother denied any connection but all have the traits.
Are there photo's as well? And do you happen to know if Georgia Osterhout is related to Betty Osterhout Gunderson? Any information would be of great help. Many thanks in advance. ~Ronda

Hello.
I was in Manistique this summer with my family. My great-grandparents had had the Park Hotel there. I was walking out of the post office and asked the two men walking in if they knew anything about the family that had owned the hotel. The younger man said he was______Deloria and that he was in my uncle's class in school. I think my uncle is about 73 so that would make Mr. Deloria about the same age and he does live in town. May help with your puzzle.

Your obvious tone of annoyance clashed with what could be helpful information.
Use of all caps is reserved for extraordinary emphasis.
Using the maiden name enabled me to connect with a cousin that led to the obtaining of information. As a teacher, I research constantly and find the various combinations of information invite greater possibilities of retrieval of information by casting a wider net, especially in the beginning of a search. Certainly specific information is essential and is inserted whenever found.

Hi all,I'm trying to locate any information on my GGrandpa John (Jack) Robinson. I know from family "lore" he owned a Trading Post or Store in the Seney area between the 1890's & 1940's. The last time I came thru there (maybe 10 years ago) a couple of the broken down building were still there along the road. Now this was outside of the "town" (LOL) of Seney to the south on highway 77,the building were across from the Seney Wildlife Refuge but north of Germfask.John (who went by the name of Jack) was a noted bear hunter & trapper (as per his obit from Wexford County,MI). He and his family would travel north to Seney from Cherry Grove,Wexford County in the Spring, and back down in the Fall, any information would be so helpful! Thanks Lori

I'm doing some research on the Gilroy's, Cutler's, Mckay's and Anderson's, Halverson's in Manistique area. I have a William Toenessen who married a Leola Giroy in 1924 and a Harry Toenessen who married a Vera Gilroy in 1928. Is your Harry related to these people? Also are there any pictures of these people. My grandparents were Elwyn Anderson and Lillian(Hirn)Anderson who lived out on the River Road. I heard that my grandfather, Elwyn would ride a motorcycle at fairs with a propped up wheel that would make it ride funny and also ride a motorcycle in a cylinder cage type of thing. I've been looking for pictures of that as well.
