I’m not related to any member of this family.

1930 is the last available census at this time.

1940 census will be released on April 2, 2012. It will take several months to transcribe all the states.

You will not find them enumerated with their parents.

Facts you should know about the early census records -
All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces +++

NEED DOB's + birthplaces for Harlow and Clarinda.

They are not listed in the 1850 MICH census.

Well, if Ardell Gardapee and Agnes Scharmach are your mother's cousins, then William Russell is your second cousin.

Since your mother to you to visit them in the UP, maybe you met William or maybe your mother could tell me what town they lived ?

I know exactly who Agnes and Ardell are - they are my mom's cousins and I had spent time with them when I was in elementary school. My parents took us to visit when my mom wanted to take her parents to see family in the UP.
Just before I received notification that you had replied I was reading the latest postings for Manistique. You've added another name for my family with Agnes' maiden name.

Sorry that I cannot help you much with your search; however, I can tell you about what I have as it might be a missing piece for you.

First, William Gardapee married into my family tree so I am not researching that family name other than how it pertains directly to William.

Second, what I know....his parents were Ardell Gardapee and Agnes Scharmach. He had at least three brothers - James; David and Dennis. I believe he was born in Michigan and attended high school in or around Manistique, MI. My last address for him would be in Sheboygan County, WI and he worked for Kohler Company.

Well, maybe it helped?

I'm a decendent of Dominic Gardapee (he's my great-great grandfather on the maternal side).
I have not found a William R. Gardapee in any of my family tree searches and my mom hasn't mentioned anyone by that name, either.
I have cousins with the last name of Gariepy.
Gariepy was the original spelling of the family name. In my family documents it's also spelled Gardipee.
My mom is the last surviving child of Catherine Amelia Gardipee Knoph and Hiram Edwin Knoph.

They had four children: Abigail, Reginald, Harry and Maud. I have done considerable research regarding this family and would like to share information. I am not related to this family.

Becky Anderson asked:
"How is Isabel related to them?" I DO NOT KNOW, and her email link appears to be "stale" (inactive).

"Are there other brothers and sisters of Martha and Johannes?"
If they were originally from Norigaren-Liaboe farm in Halsa parish, these might be them.
(NOTE: Date following name is their birth/christening date. I omitted death dates for those in Norway, since they were listed later in the chapter.)

Ole Olsen Knarvik and Martha Oldsdtr had 9 children:
B1) Ole 25Dec1843 married Anne Jonsdtr Klaetten - he took over the farm;

B2) Guri 3 Dec 1846 - married 3 Jan 1878 Johannes Ellevson 1854 - they moved to a different farm (covered in a different chapter or book)

B3) Martha 1847 - married 3 Jan 1878 Hans Ellevson 1854. This couple emigrated to US.
** Comment: possibly Johannes and Hans Ellevson were siblings who married siblings? OR coincidentally they were unrelated but shared the same patronymic last name? **

B4) Olaus 1853 (korporal) - he emigrated to US eventually.
He married Ildri Olsdtr Nistu Liabøe and had 5 kids.

B5) Johannes 1862 - emigrated to US (unmarried)

B6) Anna 1865 - emigrated to US - married Ole A Hønsvik
** Opinion: the "A" might be Anderson. She may have married Hønsvik in the US; just by the way the sentence was compiled. **

B7) Martinus 1850 married Anne Marie Rindal in Aure - they had 5 kids
** Each of the 5 kids are listed ("C" generation); then the 3 daughters of the fifth kid too ("D" generation). **

B8) Jakob who emigrated to US unmarried

B9) Marie 1859 married Sivert Sivertsen Vullum 1862

Please contact me directly off-list through my Yahoo account if this is your husband's family with "Norigaren-Liaboe" in subject. I will then send you the 4-page chapter for Norigaren-Liaboe farm (in Norwegian) from which this info was extracted. It was photocopied from the Halsaboka (farm book for Halsa district) that I found in the U-Wisconsin library in Madison WI.

Once you get (and translate) the chapter, if you have not done so already, join NORWAY-L. Somebody will help you use the on-line Norwegian censuses, church books, and maybe even visit archives for you to view original records if not already scanned. It’s a very active list (multiple postings per day) so for this reason I recommend joining in Digest mode (you'll get several postings packed into one or more emails per day).

RD (find_kin)

Yes Dallas is my 2nd cousin. Actually there are 7 crosses with the Demers and DeMars families with mine. Dolores Demers married my 1st cousin once removed Frderick David Gould {Puggy] I was the flower girl, Sep 1948. Dolores sister Virginia married my 2nd cousin George "Red" Devine, Shirley Demers their 1st cousin married Paul Walters, my 2nd cousin. Of course Eleanor's sister married Clifford Gould Dallas's 1st cousin and my 2nd cousin she did divorce him [smart girl] Laura DeMars married my 1st cousin once removed the late Osterhout [I cannot remember if it was Ken or Tom Osterhout]. And my 2nd cousin once removed A Johnson girl married a Demers boy total 7 crosses. And since the DeMars and Demers family is actually the same family we are connected.

Joanne was born in Thompson, Schoolcraft, MI. Joanne more commonly went by the name Hannah, and is listed as such in her censuses.
A.J.'s first name was just A.J. (he had a son, my great Uncle, that was also just AJ but went by the nickname Mickey.) It "technically" stands for his father's name, Adoniram Judson, BUT Adoniram Judson was not his name. All of AJ's records, he is listed only AJ (even marriage). The only instance where he is not is in a census when he is small, there is an "alfred" listed, which is very strange... It was known in our family Adoniram Judson was a family name that was just shortened to AJ in following generations. I would be very surprised to find out otherwise, although, Anything is possible!! :)
AJ was born March of 1894. He was also born in schoolcraft county, although I am not sure which town. I am assuming it was Hiawatha, although it could have been Manistique.

I have NOT been able to find any record of their marriage at all. I haven't been able to find a record of AJ's divorce from his first wife Martha Schubring either.
If 1930 is the last Census, Joanne and AJ should be able to be found , as they were married in 1929. I've even used "Alfred" in the searches, just in case and cannot find them.
Also, Joanne and AJ resided in Thompson.
