Photography studios in Manistique, MI

Where would 1900 & later family photographs (or negatives) from the photographers be held? Are they all held by the Log Cabin Genealogical society or are they housed in the Escanaba Public Library? And "Who" were the local photographers back then? I'm looking for school photos or family photos that can be copied.
Any help is grately appreciated. Thanks.

The "old" photo studio in Manistique is now longer in business but I believe that Dan and Susan White (Portraits Plus 906 341 2772) bought his business and might still have some of the old pictures but I think most were destroyed. The Schoolcraft County Historical Society might have some as might the Manistique Public Library (906 341 4316).. What family and what school years are you looking for? Theresa McManus Neville

Thanks for the reply. I'm interested in finding photographs of the Gundersen,Riley & Kokesh families. They attended school in Thompson & Manistique around 1900 & up until about 1950.I'm very much interested in finding a wedding or famiy photograph of the Gundersen's since there may be an Indian connection.
Thanks.

There was recently a book published about Thompson, don't know if it has any pictures in it. The names of Gundersen, Riley and Kokesh are familiar to me but will have to do some checking to see who might have more information on those families.

I did try to send for the book on Thompson, but was told that there weren't any left. I would love to find a copy.

I'll do some checking. I am a member of the Schoolcraft Historical Society so someone might know where there is a copy.
Looking at our local phone book, there are some people that might have some info: Gundersen, JM 227 S Lake St Manistique MI 49854, 906 341 5754; Kokesh, Albert 900 Steuben St Manistique MI 49854, 906 341 5573; and I know that Dora Ann Toennessen's mother was Bertha Riley so she might have some info..Dora's husband is Harry, 131 N Third St, Manistique MI 49854 906 341 2395. Hope some of this helps. Theresa McManus Neville

Hi,
Yes all the names you listed are my relation.Dora's grandfather(Albert) is a brother to my GGGrandfather(John Riley). There is a mystery surrounding the death of Albert & Johns other brother "Grant Riley". His death cert.(7Sept1908) gave no cause of death & was unable to locate an obituary-He was only 34. His wife Nora(Robinson)Riley gave their son to Grants parents(William&Amelia Riley) to raise and disapeared. I wonder if Dora would know what happened or have any photographs.

Hi Theresa,
Just wondering if you happened to find out if there might still be a copy of the Thompson Book floating around? I only get "Home" to the U.P every July so I'm going to put the Historical Society on my list of places to stop as well as Portraits Plus and the school library(I sent them a request one time and never heard back). Do you also happen to know if Alex Meron still has holdings..don't hear much anymore.
Thanks Again,
Ronda

Haven't found out any info on available copies yet but will keep checking. Alex Meron is no longer in town. She is living somewhere else with her daughter. Theresa

There is a copy of the Book on Thompson in the Manistique Library, I have a copy, I just looked and i must have left it at my house by the lake in Thompson. It does have some photos, and does have many early families in it mine included [Gould]. One word of warning however, a lot of the content was from peoples memories and not checked out for accuracy. I found numerous contridictions on my family all on the same page. The photos are great, and it will still give you something. The book was written by my first cousin once removed, Aunt. So be prepared to verify what you find in the book. Karen
