Otsego Co. relatives

I am trying to do my family history from Az and I, and my relatives are from MI. Crissey, my fathers family came from NJ to Ohio to Michigan to Maryland then back to Michigan. My gr-grandfather was George Clark Crissey. He married my gr-grandmother Cinda King in Ohio where they had at least 2, possably 3 of their children. They had the rest of the children in MI. George Crissey appears on the 1894 list of soldiers, sailors and Marines in Livingston Twp.
After returning to MI my father met and Married Cloella Failes d/o Theodore Failes and Laura Slagel. Her Parents were Joseph Slagel and Henrietta Long. I have a lot of information on the Slagel family. I am not doing so well with Theodore Failes and his Family. He is the child of Edward Failes and Margaret Walters. They had several children. Patrick m Christina,William, m.Minnie, Damin, Richard never married was killed, Edward, Ira m. Sadie, Anna Belle m. William, Irene, and Theodore being the youngest born 1870. If any one has information on any of these people I sure would like to hear from you. I will be more than glad to share what information I have. Thanks in advance.

Newspaper obituaries for 1898 in Vanderbilt for William J. Sly

Please, can anyone tell me whether a newspaper existed in Otsego County in 1898 that might have had obituaries? If so, is there microfilm available of it anywhere today? I am trying to find details about William J. Sly who was born in 1826 and died on 13 or 14 September 1898 in Vanderbilt. William is buried in Evergreen Hill Cemetery (also called Vanderbilt Cemetery). Because I do not live in Michigan, I am unfamiliar with what newspapers might have existed in the area around 1898. Thanks for your suggestions!

Hi!
I´m looking for some info about my finnish relatives. I think one of them lives in in Gaylord Mi, and her name is Delores Shiels. She has a sister Marlene Koskela in Erie, Pennsylvania.
I found their names, only a few days ago, in a obituary of their mother Miriam Pauli, she died in 2004.
Miriam was born 1916 in Negaunee MI to Frank and Sophia (Koski/nen) Wiita. Frank Wiita was born 1889 in Jalasjärvi Finland and he was an older brother to my maternal grandmother Aune Maria. More about this Viita/Koski family you can read on scandinavian and baltic board/finland.
Sounds familiar?

Best regards/Tarja in Sweden

Seeking information on the family of George Alfred BALA and his wife, Martha Isobel GALLOWAY. George was born c1880, the son of James and Sophia BEATTE BALA. On 13 Nov 1901, he married Martha I. GALLOWAY, born 28 Dec 1881, the daughter of Thomas M. and Martha GALLAY GALLOWAY. They later moved to the state of New York, but I think that their children were all born in the Otsego County area.

Martha Sophia BALA (c 1902 - ? )

James Edward BALA (c 1905 - ? )

Howard Belmont BALA

George Edward BALA (died as an infant)

Kenneth Earl BALA

George Clifford BALA

I would like to share and exchange information and photographs with anyone having knowledge of any of these people. I would also like to hear from anyone researching the BEATTE or GALLOWAY surnames in Otsego County, simply to compare notes and see if we can’t assist one another in filling in details on each other’s lines. I would like to know more about George’s parents and siblings.
I am looking for the descendants of Allen Morford who died on July 8, 1930 in Vanderbilt, Otsego County, MI. His wife was Mary and his daughter, Mae lived with her parents in 1930 (census). Besides Mae, children were Georgiana, FLorence, George W. and Harry A. I am a descendant of Allen's sister, Anna, who married Dudley Oldswager in New York and immigrated to Flint, MI. Dudley and Anna are my g-grandparents. I do genealogy on the Morford family and am trying to connect Allen's father to Allen's grandfather. Any help would be appreciated. Pauli from Arkansas

RUSH SCHOOL DISTRICT

As part of an ongoing project, I am attempting to collect as much available information on the RUSH SCHOOL and the RUSH SCHOOL DISTRICT as possible.

Several years ago, I discovered that an ancestress of mine had taught school in the “RUSH DISTRICT.” For years, I was told that nothing existed on this small, one-room school and that searching was futile. However, in the past year or so, I have been able to obtain several photographs (including one of my gr-gr Aunt, Carrie E. STARKS GALLOWAY), of the school, some of it’s teachers, and even some students. In addition I have also obtained some transcriptions of school rosters and other materials that I would like to make available to other researchers.

Before compiling this information however, I would like to gather as much additional information as possible- this would make the project of compiling materials chronologically much easier. Can you help? ANYTHING pertaining to this small school would be of interest. Please don’t think that what you have is too small a contribution… I would be thrilled just to add another attending child’s name to the materials already gathered.
Not asking that you donate or give any original materials. Would simply like a photocopy, e-mailed information or a scan of anything pertaining to this school, its teachers, or its students.

Please feel free to contact me with questions as well. I would be happy to share anything that I currently have via e-mail.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!!

[P.S. Thank you too to all those who have already shared information. As promised, any final compilations will site both contributors and sources. =o) ]

CHARLES FLER--Obituary 1958

[The following obituary appeared in the Otsego County Times Herald in Gaylord, Michigan on 4 December,l958] CHARLES FLER DIES FOLLOWING LONG ILLNESS. Charles Henry Fler was born on October 21, 1880 in Hayes Township, son of Henry and Ida Bell Fler. He spent his boyhood in local lumber camps. He met and married Elizabeth Graham on May 5, 1908, and three children were born to them, one of whom died in infancy. To most of his friends and neighbors, he was simply known as "Charlie", not as Mr. Fler. especially to the younger generation, who loved to listen to his tales of the woods. Charlie spent his entire life in Gaylord and there are very few for whom he had not performed some service at one time or another. He passed away on Friday, November 21, at the age of 78, after a lingering illness. Surviving are his widow, one son, Roy, of Detroit; one daughter, Mrs. Helen Robinson of Saginaw; three sisters, three brothers, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Services were held at Walker Funeral Home at 2 p.m.on Monday, November 24, with Rev. Guenther Branstner of the Methodist Church officiating. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery. Serving as pall bearers at the service were Herbert Hutchins, Athur Savage, Averill Soper, Svend Madson, William Bankov, and Alfred Coon.
Looking for information on Oliver Adkins, who married Hazel Marie Harris 13 April 1916 in Otsego. Family history says that there was a child born May 1917 who died at birth. Hazel Marie (my grandmother) married George Daniel Parks 20 Oct 1919 in Kalkaska. Have no idea what happened to Oliver. Did he die? Were they divorced? Can find no record of this child.
