I am told that there was a 50th wedding anniversary for John McCanna and wife Mary Ann Hogue in the newspaper in Ontonagon in October, 1919. I believe that their wedding date was October 31, but am not positive on that. Is there anyone that can find the text for me? We're trying to figure out where she and her sister got married, possibly in either St. Mary's or St. Anne's, in Alpena. We really need to know what was in the notice in the newspaper.

Haefer is printed on the front of the photo along with the city of Hancock.
Thank-you,
Denise

I am searching for Jakob Vahakangas/Vaaramaa who was married to Jemiina Silven, both from Finland.

They emigrated to the USA in 1890 and both died on May 28, 1927. Any information would be appreciated.

I do have their birthdates and additional information but am unsure of their whereabouts at the time of death. Family records point to either Wasas, Michigan or Ashtabula, Ohio.

Thanks,

Linda
I have found my McCarty/McCarthy/ family in Ontonagon in the 1860 Census and want to know if at the top of the Census where it says Post office and it gives Rockland, does that means that is where the family was living? Otherwise it says the census is from Ontonagon, County of Ontonagon, State of Michigan. I am hoping that it does mean Rockland so I can write the church there to see if they have baptism records for family. If anyone can tell me what the Rockland Post office may mean to my search I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks
Rikhard Laiho along with Dr Rudolph Pinola's work
has been put into a database. It is a list of Finnish American's lured back to Soviet Karelia.Finland lost (ceded)
part of Karelia to Russia after the war.
Mr Laiho has been kind enough to tell us to spread the list to those who ask. It has 1,585 names of people. Some were executed and others never got to come back to America or return to Finland.
If any of you has missing Finnish family, they may be among this list.
I can send it to those who ask, it is in a Microsoft works format.
Alicia Marshall
alicia@chartermi.net
I would be interested in any information on the Frank (originally Franz) GILG, p. 23, Rockland Twp., 1860 census, mining laborer, born in Austria (actually East Boehmen). I believe this is my g-grandfather who by 1862 is registered as a soldier for the Wisconsin infantry in the Civil War.
Even more I am interested in the 3 KOCHs mentioned on pp. 2-3 of Rockland Township, 1860, Leopold b ca 1832, with wife Annie and daughter Annie, "Gotlief" (likely my g-grandfather Gottlieb) KOCH, b ca 1831, and brother(?) or cousin(?) Frank / Franz KOCH b ca 1831 too. I found Leopold and Franz again in 1870, but what happened to them after that? I know Gottlieb moved to Stearns County in 1866 and died there in 1898. At least I believe this "Gotlief" and my Gottlieb are the same. I am especially interested in from what town in Wuerttemberg they were born.
Thanks for any help or comments.

Where would the town records likely be kept now, if any?

If there are any Michigan history buffs out there, I would appreciate any info you may have or be able to direct me to (I do not live in Michigan).
I am looking for any info on August Hassan as it lists him in the 1860 census for Ontonagon. His name is actually spelt Husson. The info on that census matches the info I have for my 3rd great grandfather. He also lived in Norway, Michigan as a Mine (Mechanical) Engineer. He was born in France and died in Norway,Michigan 1900. His wifes name was Adeline Chabod. They had 9 children. I am especially searching for August and Adelines marriage record. Any info from the Minnesota Mine(listed as post office) on August would be great. Any other info is also greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to locate names of siblings of August Joseph LaHa (Lahaie) who married Agnes Mary Lenway (Lanoie) 2 Dec. 1890 at Hurley, Iron, WI. August's father was Joseph Lahaie who married Marie Elmire Ross 21 Sep 1858 , St. Stanislas, Champlain, PQ. I only know of one sister to August, her name was Mary and she was married to ____Marchand. Joseph filed his intent to naturalize 24 July 1890 in Ontonagon County. MI. Figuring 7seven years back he probably would have emigrated around 1883 to MI. I keep running into records for other LaHas, but without knowing his siblings I can't tell if they "belong to me". Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Charles Witherell-Obit.

The Ontonagon Herald
April 26, 1902
Sudden Death
Charles Witherell Passed Away In Detroit Hospital Monday
Charles C.(or G,) Witherell, bookeeper for L.Groesbeck & Son, of Ontonagon, died in the Harper Hospital, Detroit, Monday morning.
The announcement of his sudden demise came as a severe shock to his many Ontonagon friends and the circumstances connected with it, are particularly sad. Almost three weeks ago, he left here for the purpose of having an operation performed in that hospital, but it was not considered that there was any danger connected with it, and he had undergone the same operation once before. the operation was performed on the Wednesday preceeding his death, and word was received here that he had easily passed the critical point in the ordeal. A day or two later his condition suddenly changed, and he began to gradually grow weaker. Mrs. Witherell, who was here, was notified of his changed condition and Sunday morning she left for Detroit, but before she arrived there her husband had crossed the great divide.
Mr. Witherell was about 40 years old, and had been a resident of Ontonagon for some 14 months, serving as bookeeper fo L. Groesbeck & Son. He was very industrious, performing his work in a very capable manner, and he was highly esteemed by his employeers. He came here from Port Huron, but he was formerly a resident of Canada. Last fall his wife joined him here and they commenced housekeeping.
Mr. Witherell was a member of M.E. Church and was assistant superintendent of the Sunday School. He took much interest and was a faithful worker in all things pertaining to the church. Mr. Witherell was a good man, and by his gentlemanly and courteous treatment of all with whom he came in contact, made many admiring friends who sincerely regret that his life span was broken so unmaturely.
Submitted by Carla North
Not related

Land in Ontonagon County

My great-grandfather Othelbert P. Smith purchased an 80-acre tract of land in Ontonagon County in 1904, but to the best of my knowledge he never lived there. Is there any way to determine the eventual disposition of that land, based upon the township-range-section coordinates obtainable from the Land Office? I'm hoping to determine when that land was sold as a clue to when he passed away. Many thanks in advance!

Does anyone know of the family that ran a boarding house in 1906 in Rockland? When my great grandfather moved there with his children after the death of his wife, THe family's name was Mattson/Mottson. I believe they had a daughter named Ina who married an Erick (Seline maybe?) I'm trying to find more information about my grandmother & her stay there in the boarding house. Persons in my family are Peter Anderson, whose first wife was Maria Kristina who died in 1902 from a sledding accident, and then his second wife who was Selma Katrina who also died after childbirth in 1906. His children, and my grandmother was Yarda/Gerda, and her siblings were Edward, Henry, Linus. They all moved into the boarding house after 1906.Any info on any of the two families would be helpful. Thanks -

They were given to my Great-granmother, Maria Grigg for not being tardy once during the first & third sessions of the school year. Both cards were signed by the principal, E.A. Whitman (I think. the signature isn't very clear). I would like any information regarding the Union School.

I am researching these early families of Ontonagon Co. Bethuel and Alexander Draper were in the Rockland area in the late 1850's to the 1870's. Bethuel's daughter, Mary, married Willard Leonard Thomas and resided in Rockland until the mid 1870's when they went to Vilas Co. WI. Sarah Draper married John King about 1872 and may have lived in Ontonagon or Rockland until about 1880 when they moved to Calumet. And finally Alice King married Charles Minic/Minnics of Ontonagon Co. about 1900. Any information on any of these families, other than census records which I already have, would be greatly appreciated.

Smith Family

I posted a message on the unknown board but thought it better to try here. GG grandfather, Ramsey Smith, Sr. born in MI, Possibly Rockland. I have discovered from 1920 MN census that he was "mixed"(04-4, I don;t know what that means yet)
He lists his parents being both born in Canada. As of 1930 census he was 6 putting his birth at appox. 1869. Though family history states his birth on 12/7/1868. MN records of death for him, are not indexed for DOB, POB, or mothers maiden name. The microfilm is not readable or it is not listed.
In previous message post, I refered to information possibly of Indian Chief, that information is incorrect I beleive his parents were farmers instead, as that is what he is listing in 1920 and 1930. If anyone could offer help or advise on tracing Native American family out of MI, my sister and I would be very thankful.
Kathy/MN
