From the Ontonagon Herald on Saturday, November 13, 1943:

Albert Stark Passed Away Suddenly

Albert Stark passed away suddenly Sunday afternoon. He has worked in and around Ontonagon for some time and is well known here.

The body was shipped from the Driscoll Funeral Home to the Wichmann Funeral Home at Appleton, Wisconsin Monday morning where Mr. Stark's brother Arthur resides.

This is the entire obituary. It was on the front page of the Herald. I'll check to see if there is a follow up to it.

Sheri

There is a G. Adolph Pietila buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Greenland. His headstone reads that he was born November 24, 1876 and he died June 30, 1923. I'm assuming that the G stands for Gustaf. I don't see a wife buried with him although maybe she is and there just isn't a marker.

Hope this helps.

That name is a hard one to find as it is so often spelled
wrong. There is a new beta test site with many Michigan
rocords on it but it may be a long search. You have to be creative in spelling. You can search by just first name and put in the county and it will automatically fill it in or by last name.
Here is the link
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home
It has some other states as well but I have only used it in mich. so far.
Alicia

James died in Houghton in 1904 and theresa died there in 1910.

I have been unable to find which port or ship they came to the U.

Looking for any information available on Leona Kutscheid b. 7 December 1897 d. September 1973. She probably wed a Kutscheid. I am researching Kutscheid(s) on my family tree and trying to find a place for her and/or her spouse. If possible, could someone find a copy of the obituary in the Ontonagon newspaper and send the data to me.

Alicia:
My gg grandfather was William Alexander Johnston. We estimate he was born in early 1820's or late teens from census records, in either Canada, New York, or Ohio. He is of Scottish or Scotch/Irish descent. He married Christina Otto (Prussian) sometime in early 1850's. He is listed as a farmer in the 1860 census and all the children are listed as being born in Vaughnsville, Michigan (6 of them) starting in 1856.
At this point, we are looking at all angles including the mines. Everyone in the family, including Christina, is buried in Chicago and, in fact, the family took great pains to transport them here to be buried together when they passed in other places. That is quite unusual for 100 years ago when refrigeration wasn't readily available.
There is no evidence of him being with the family past 1860 and as I said, subsequent censuses list Christina as still married, not widowed. We have no evidence he was in the war. We have not found him in the California Gold Rush either. I have not found him in what little land records I could find. I have not found him in Lutheran church records. (I was told alot of the parsonages kept the records in their homes and didn't necessarily pass them on to be recorded.)
I have periodically checked the Houghton, Ontonogan, and Kewenaw sites with no success. If you live up there, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jill

Thanks Alicia:
My ancestor had to have been living there around the time of the founding of the town. His family ended up migrating down through Wisconsin (Sheboygan) and ended up in Chicago. Sometime between 1860 and 1870 he is not with his wife and children anymore, yet she is listed as married and not a widow on the 1870 census. As you seem to have alot of info on the area, do you have any idea how I would get owner and tenant records for that timeframe? Do you know where there are lists of who was working at that mine at the time? Any info would be helpful, as I have been at a blank wall for 10 years on this particular ancestor. Thanks so much, Jill
Does anyone have info on Vaughnsville, Michigan? May have been in Ontonagon or Houghton counties. Came in and out of existance within about 20 years around the 1840's or 50's. Does nayone know the purpose of founding the town? Farmers? Miners? Sailors? Are there cemeteries nearby? Where would the town records likely be kept now, if any?

If there are any Michigan history buffs out there, I would appreciate any info you may have or be able to direct me to (I do not live in Michigan). Thanks so much.

Jill McCain

I just happen to be trying to find a final resting place or obituary on a James Johnston in the Canada/Michigan area for somewhere between 1901 and 1906. Would you mind sharing any other essential parts of the obit that you have for James Johnston's accidental death and maybe we are trying to piece together the same James Johnston's line. I also have found that there was a Baltimore Township Michigan also. Possibly other info from the obit would help us both to figure it out. My e-mail add is jeeck@bscn.com. Thanks.

Alicia,

Thank you for your time in looking the information up for me. However, I got the same info you did from the same site; family search. Although I use the family search site too, I do try to have the information confirmed from a vital record....in this case I want to make sure that I have the information from that source to make sure their were no mistakes in the information given.

Thank you for trying to help however-I really do appreciate it!!

Amanda

Hello!
My name is Amanda and for about 4 years I have been looking for information regarding my 3rd great grandmother & grandfather. I recently found some info that would lead me to believe that they were married in Ontonagon County, MI. More specifically in the town of Ewen. I don't live anywhere near these places and I was sincerely hoping that someone-anyone from that area would be so kind as to look up the information for me. ....PLEASE!!!

The names are Mary MOSS and Frank VANIEA. The year would be about the 18th of April 1895. Mary's fathers name I beieve was 'Joe MOSS'. I would really apreciate any help in the matter. If the record is there I would like to have ALL info on the record copied down please. Even the wittnesses names would be helpful. Thank you!!

I have a Burke famliy ties is Ontonagon County. The two that I am aware of is Sarah Burke and Anna Burke (Sutton). Sarah was born in County (King)Offaly Ireland around 1842. Anna may have been a sister-in-law or a sister. I'm not really sure. Sarah sent her second child to live with Anna after Sarah's husband abandoned them.

Andreas Liljegren was born February 21, 1866 in Östra Tommarp parish, Sweden. He immigrated in 1889. I haven’t found him, neither in the censuses, nor in other sources. My only trace of him is a portrait, taken by “C Raven, Ontonagon, Mich”.

Photographer Christian Raven was at work in Ewen, Ontonagon between 1884 (earliest) and 1900 (at the latest).

Any information about Andreas (Andrew) Liljegren and Christian Raven is valuable to me.
