Trying to determine the correct birth date for Jesse Decker who settled in Orion, Oakland, Michigan 1825. Most estimates have it to be c1785 in either New Jersey or Pennsylvania. Death date is unknown, but was after 21 June 1870 (Federal Census for Oxford, Oakland, Michigan).
Jesse may be the grandson of Solomon Decker and Mary Dolly Thomas who lived in Romulus, Seneca, New York, USA. After reviewing the “Will” of Solomon dated 25 Dec 1811, it states to bequeath to my grandson Jesse Decker a son of my son Moses Decker the sum of 50 dollars to be put to use until he arrives to the age of twenty one. (Birth of 1790 or after).
There are two instances of conflicting data between 1785 and 1811, where Jesse would have already been about 26 years old at the time of Solomon’s 1811 “Will” (not less than 21yrs old). Couple this with the (unsourced) marriage date of 6 Jun 1806 to Mary Polly Brown. This marriage was supposedly in Ovid, Seneca, New York, just south of Romulus.
With the help of beckyk122 who posted at Ancestry the 8 Jan 1871 death of Mary Polly (Brown) Decker - Detroit Free Press - 22 Jan 1871 - Page 1, 85 years old. This corroborates her birth in c1786. (Age 20 at time of marriage). Jesse on the other hand could have been 21yrs old (1785 birth).
This begs the question whether there were two individuals named Jesse Decker? The marriage was close by to Romulus, which places him near to Solomon, but the age of less than 21 timeline doesn’t fit (per “Will”). Finding Jesse’s death date, may help establishing birth date (depending on informant’s knowledge), and tying Jesse to Moses Decker could help also. Any thoughts or information? please reply.
