Born Janice Lynne Chisholm on November 22, 1945, in Saginaw, she was the daughter of Edwin Bayne Chisholm and Eileen Lucille Ferguson.
Janice graduated Saginaw Arthur Hill High School in 1963, and then attended Olivet Nazarene College, Kankakee, Illinois, for two years.
In 1965, she married T. Wayne Drake, and worked at St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.
Following the conclusion of her marriage to Wayne in 1970, she returned to Michigan and was hired as Deputy Township Clerk in Carrollton Twp., Saginaw County, MI. It was at this position in Carrollton, where she would meet William Schmidt, her current husband, in 1972. Janice held the position in Carrollton from 1970-1975.
From 1975-1980, she was an Export Coordinator in Saginaw County.
Her wonderful marriage to Bill Schmidt began on June 7, 1980, at Ames Methodist Church in Saginaw, with the ceremony presided by her cousin, the Reverend Devin Chisholm.
From 1980-1985, Janice again worked as an Export Coordinator for the Michigan Elevator Division of Michigans Farm Bureau in Lansing.
Janice began her last employment position in 1990 at the City of Farmington Clerks Office. During her time spent there, she was promoted to Deputy Clerk and retired with that title in 2002, although returning frequently to assist and support her colleagues.
Janice loved to travel. She and Bill traveled extensively to destinations including Newfoundland, Rome, Nova Scotia, California, throughout New England and Michigan. In fact, while in Rome, Janice was offered a blessing by Pope John Paul II for health, but declined, making room for people she thought were sicker than she.
In addition to her love of travel, Janice loved the outdoors, nature, hunting, Ontonagon, MI and the Roscommon cabin. She loved decorating, cooking, music, playing piano, using her beautiful alto voice, and singing You Are My Sunshine to her cherished grandchildren.
She remembered with fondness her 1996 Christmas present from Bill, a hot air balloon ride along Milford. She was a member of the Greyhound Society of Eastern Michigan and the proud owner of her own greyhound, Steffi. Additionally, Janice was proud to help coordinate the recent first Chisholm family reunion.
Sadly, Janices health issues were numerous. Severely diabetic for years, she also battled leukemia since 2006, a heart operation in November 2008, and a stroke in February of this year. In spite of her own serious struggles, she managed to care for Bill after being struck by a car in December 2006 until his recovery in April of the following year.
What made her happiest, though, was being surrounded by her grandchildren. Gabriel, Noah, Abigail and Evelyn will remember with great fondness a grandmother who loved them more than anything. They truly were her sunshine.
Surrounded by her family, Janice passed from this life into the next on Tuesday morning, April 27th, around 7:20 AM, following a 4 month stay in St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor. May she finally rest in peace.
Janice is survived by her husband of almost 30 years, William; her son, Jeffrey (Tricia) Drake; grandchildren, Gabriel, Noah, Abigail and Evelyn; and her brother, Lawrence (Cindy) Chisholm.
The family will receive guests at the Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5-8 PM and Thursday from 2-8 PM.
A Funeral Service is planned for Friday, April 30th, 10:00 AM, also at the Funeral Home.
Interment at the Historic Farmington Oakwood Cemetery will follow the ceremony.
Memorial tributes are suggested to Go Red for Women (American Heart Assn.), goredforwomen.org, or American Diabetes Association, diabetes.org.
