I posted this at another genealogy website;

Well, I called the county clerk's office and asked for some assistance. The nice lady on the phone said that they really didn't do anything over the phone, but that I should fill out a form on their website. It would cost $5 for the search and $10 if I wanted a copy. If they didn't find one, she said that I would get $10 back. As we both said, that is a lot better deal than going through the State of Michigan (they want $26 with NO chance of a refund, full or partial).

>There are 2 trees shown on Ancestry with his name--maybe one is yours??? It's a private tree. The other states h died Oct 1897 in Vienna Twnshp.

One of them is my tree and the other tree belongs to another cousin that got their information from me. Dead end there.

I'll give a shot with mailing $15+postage to the county clerk's office. At least if I strike out that way, I'll get $10 back.

Montmorency's website states they have death certifs from 1881. Clerks phone number is 989-785-8022. Copies-$8.00.

Contact RAOGK (Random Acts of Geneologial Kindness) They have a website. I believe the person is Barb Burns that will do look ups in Montmorency County.

Montmorency Historical Society in Hillman--President is Florence Tripp--989-742-4218.

There are 2 trees shown on Ancestry with his name--maybe one is yours??? It's a private tree. The other states h died Oct 1897 in Vienna Twnshp.

A note about the census------I have found some of my relatives listed as "widow, widower". The TRUTH is that they were not a widow (er) at all, but were actually divorced. Their "deceased spouse" was actually alive and well and listed on the same census!!!!!!! Come to think of it, I don't recall seeing "divorced" anywhere on the census.

Hope something here helps you.

Jennifer G.

>Try not to blow your money for a certificate that may have never been filed.

Yeah, especially at $26 a pop via the state! As I semi-mentioned in my other post to you, the time of the year might have something to do with it and also the area. Although, they live only 6 miles as the crow flies from the county seat.

>Back in those days, however, local newspapers did report deaths and the dates...

Well, to see those local papers, I think that my best luck would be up there and I am 900 miles south.

>Another place for deaths in that area is: pilot.familysearch.org/

Been there, done that. My luck there wasn't as good as the State of Michigan site.

Thanks for your suggestions.

>If they don't have a record, then neither does the state.

I was beginning to think that myself especially after spending half a day or so going through every combination at the State of Michigan website. Also, the time of year might have something to do with the apparent lack of a death certificate. Winters in the northern Michigan can be a real PITA.

I'll give the county clerk a try next week. With the name that I am looking for, they might recognize something.

If they don't have a record, then neither does the state. Unless there were fires there, and we all know there were. But ask them first if they have any records from about 1896 to 1900 and if they do, ask if this record is there. If they have no record, there probably IS NO record.

Try not to blow your money for a certificate that may have never been filed. In Alpena county, IN the city, my great grandfather died. That was in 1891. There was no death certificate at all. His youngest son was the only family with him, and he managed to get him buried in the city cemetery, and not even in the poor section. However, he failed to report the death to the city or county, and obviously, the adults that he came into contact with didn't mention reporting the death. There is NO certificate, although the city does have a record of his burial.

In your case, the family, especially since they buried him on the family farm, may never have thought to report it, and in those days, reporting births and deaths wasn't thought of as a necessary thing on their lists of things to do. There may well be NO certificate anywhere. Back in those days, however, local newspapers did report deaths and the dates, mostly just the name and date of death, unless the person had someone to post an obituary, or the person was important enough to warrant a news item.

I'm not familiar with the Montmorency newspapers at all, nor where they might have been printed. In Alpena county, they mostly all came out of the city of Alpena. See if you can find out that, and then, a library where they might still be sitting with some information. Another place for deaths in that area is: http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home

There, try every variation, plus search for the wife and children as well. Many times, initials are used, and you cant find the dad. Some times, in Michigan, this site is really great, depending on whether or not someone has input the data. I've had great luck in some areas, none in others. There simply may not be anything recorded!

However, I don't see Edward's there for pre-1900:
http://seekingmichigan.org/discover-collection?collection=p1...

That's where I have been looking to NO success!
>If the last daughter was b. July 1898, she was conceived circa Oct. 1897 (9 months before July 1898) and so Edward (c)ould have died after Oct. 1897, but before 1900 census.

You know, I didn't think of it happening that way. I try that scenario. Thanks, I needed another perspective.

I posted the following paragraph, minus the stuff inside the parentheses, at the State of Michigan website, www.seekingmichigan.org, that I talked about my post about Michigan Death Certificates.

I am looking for the death certificate for a Edward James McCormack(b.1857 in London, Ontario, Canada). My best information had it that he died in Feb 1899 and I assume near Atlanta in Montmorency County, Michigan. I say Feb 1899 because his last daughter was born in Jul 1898 and his wife is listed as a widow in the 1900 census. He is supposedly buried at the family farm (which passed out of the family sometime after his death) about 6 miles SW of Atlanta. I have used almost every variation, (last name and year, last name and counties surrounding the county that EJM possibly died in) that I can think and I have come up empty.

I was wondering anyone here has some suggestions on what I might try next before I "blow" $26 and order a death certificate from the State of Michigan. I have looked on Ancestry.com, Familysearch.org and have found nothing.

A cousin is trying to find his ancestor, who evidently lived in Hillman. Unknown date of death, but he and his wife, Mary, lived in Hillman and went to Calvary church (Episcopal?). They had at least one child, William E. Bryan II (born 1888 in Hillman), who married Alta Mabel Willett, from that area. Their son, William III, became a Major General in the AF.

William I was born Feb 1861 in England, and married Ella Hunt. We felt they would have been buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Alpena, but haven't been able to find them there. With the church info, is there any way to contact someone there who would have some data from that far back? We have many blank spots in their genealogy, and would love to fill them in.

There were two McCormacks who homesteded land just west of McCormack Lake. Michael McCormack homsteded the SESW of Section 25 and the N1/2NW of section 36. He received his land patent on Jan 30, 1885. Your relative, Edward J McCormack homesteaded the S1/2SE of section 26 and the W1/2SW of section 25. He received his land patent on May 20, 1885. All the above land was in present day Vienna Twp., T30N, R1E. I don't know the relationship between Edward and Michael, if they were brothers or father and son. From the dates of their land patents it appears that they both settled on their land by 1880 or earlier. It is obvious that the lake was named after these men.

Bruce W Badgrow

David Corbin SAULS is shown as being buried in Briley Cemetery in Montmorency Co. I can't locate a death record for him on SeelingMichigan.com. Does that mean that one doesn't exist? I am trying to find what parents were listed.

There are many conflicting records in census records in St Lawrence Co, NY and other records. Some indicate he was son of David Partlow and Maria SAHL/SALLS/SAULS. Others indicate SAULS/SALLS and Maria TRYON in Brushton, NY;

Can I contact Briley for a record? Or is this purely state level info?

Hi Myra!
I finally today called the library in Alcona. They said they will check for me, to see what they have.
What is NEMGS? Yes, Mrs Orin is one of mine. Any Galpin from that area is mine. I also have Graves, Parker, and Brown in that area.
Right now I have a few things driving me bannanas. In short, William Parker went to work on a dam one day and was never seen or heard from again. I need to find out if they filed a missing persons report to see if that family story is true. If it is true the cops should have been involved some way. This supposedly happened in the year 1920 or early 1921.
Ozen Galpin --Sr. died in Oct of 1957. I have been to his gravesite in Glennie and saw his headstone. It reads Ozen Galpin, yet the Glennie Cemetery book and the cemetery records say that a Ben is buried there. Who is Ben? I have never heard of him.
The records I have, not sure exactly where I got them (shame on me), state that Ozen Galpin --Sr.
died in Alcona County. I was at Alcona County court house about a month ago and they say they have no record of him dieing in that county! So I need to find his obit also.
This genealogy stuff can sure get frustrating and definetly time consuming.
Jen

I have a little info on Corbin Sauls. He was born in New York on April 1, 1842 and by 1883 he homsteaded 80 acres of land one and a half miles west of Atlanta in Montmorency County, Michigan. In 1900 he had a second wife, Augusta Dettman, and a daughter Hattie. I have his death date as January, 24, 1904. His death and his marriage to Augusta Dettman are recorded in the Montmorency County records.
His death record may give his parents names.

Bruce W Badgrow
Searching for descendants of John P. Stephens/Stevens, son of Daniel Stephens and Lydia Caroline Palmateer, born 4 October 1875, St. Clair County, Michigan. He married Carrie Frances McMurphy, daughter of James McMurphy and Martha Learn, 30 Apr 1907 in Atlanta, Montmorency County. They were living in Avery Township in 1910 with two sons, Daniel D., born about 1908 and James H., born about 1909. I am unable to positively identify this family after 1910.

Marjean Workman

Have you tried looking for it at the Alpena library? Many deaths from Hillman were in the Alpena News. If you go to the library site: http://www.alpenalibrary.org/services/contact/contactus.html

and ask the question, they will get back to you on that.

NEMGS also lists a Mrs. Orin Galpin dying 6 July 1943, in Glennie. That another Galpin of yours?

I have found a marriage for William Z. Meddaugh/Middaugh to Bettie Teets. They were married 27 July 1904 in Atlanta. Then I found a marriage for Bettie Meddaugh to an Ira Bennett in Avery Twp, Montmorency county, on 1 March 1921. Evidently, William had died. Can anyone find me any death or burial information?

I am trying to locate the 2 witnesses to a marriage between Gerald Lee Herron and Mary Elderatta Daly March 24, 1928 in Hillman. I have located Thelma Haverstick there in the 1930 census, but she is only 16 years old then, so would have been a 14 year old witness. I did find a Lillie Eagle in Hillman in the 1930 census, so must assume that she's the other witness, and she's married and about the same age as Mary Daly.

Can anyone find other information on these people?
