Re: Jennie (Jannetjen) MULDER m. Herman (Hiram) SCHOO, 1889

You have the correct names for Jennie's parents. Herm & Jennie's marriage certificate (found at Family Search) names their parents:

Groom: Hiram Shoo, b. abt 1859, Germany
Parents: Fred K. Shoo & Christ[ina] Sheperds [Schepus]
Bride: Jennie Mulder, b. abt 1871, Netherlands
Parents: Lewis Mulder & Anna Fisk
Date: 28 Apr 1889, Vogel, Missaukee

Judging by the names of the children below, I'm guessing "Lewis" is a misread of "Teunis"... Yes, looking at the original image, it is "Teunis". I see widower Teunis [sp Tennis] in Clam Union in 1900; b. Jan 1837. I'm still looking for his marriage to "Anna Fisk", likely not the proper Dutch spelling. Teunis (b. Jan 1837) was an 1881 immigrant, acc'd to the 1900 census (not completely trustworthy, but a guide); son Hendrikus 14 (b. Mar 1886) at home. They are the third family listed above Harm and Jennie, so neighbors.

Here is Jennie's parents' marriage in (municipality of) Ermelo, (province of) Gelderland, Netherlands:

Source Civil register - Marriage
Archive location Gelders Archief
General Number of finding aid: 0207
Item number: 4913
Municipality: Ermelo
Type of record: Huwelijksakte
Record number: 28
Registration date: 01-09-1865
Groom Teunes Mulder, 28, wagon maker [age fits 1900 census]
Place of birth: Ermelo
Bride Annetje Vis, 24, servant girl [d. before 1900 census*]
Place of birth: Ermelo
Father groom Jan Mulder, wagon maker
Mother groom Hilletje Karsijn
Father bride Hendrik Vis
Mother bride Sophia (Frederika) Drost

*Anna died 1 Oct 1888, Clam Union; b. abt 1840, NL; housewife

Teunes & Annetje lost a son Jan before emigration (b. 5 Mar 1866; d. 26 Jul 1868), but births of children are not on-line. I'll have to try to find their immigration.

Herm seems to have had a brother Herm/Hiram as well (likely each had a different middle name to identify them); he married Jane Greenwood on 20 Oct 1889.

Here are births and marriages I see for Herm & Anna’s children:

Christina, b. 14 Dec 1889, Clam Union Twp, Missaukee, MI
m. Cornelius Huttengs, 5 Dec 1911, Prosper, Missaukee
son of Ralph Hutengs & Johana Kuepers

Teunis (Tony), b. 17 Sep 1891, Prosper, Clam Union Twp, Missaukee
m. Rena Hoekwater, 8 Nov 1917, Prosper, Missaukee
daughter of John Hoekwater & Jane Laarman

Jennie, b. 25 Apr 1893, Clam Union Twp, Missaukee

Frederick, b. 7 Apr 1894, Clam Union Twp, Missaukee

John Hendrick, b. 12 Nov 1896, Clam Union Twp, Missaukee

Harm, b. 14 Dec 1898, Clam Union Twp, Missaukee

Annie, b. 26 Apr 1901, Clam Union Twp, Missaukee

1900 United States Federal Census
Name: Herman Schoo
Home in 1900: Clam Union, Missaukee, Michigan
Age: 42
Birth Date: Sep 1857
Birthplace: Holland
Race: White
Ethnicity: American
Gender: Male
Immigration Year: 1882
Relationship to Head of House: Head
Father's Birthplace: Germany
Mother's Birthplace: Germany
Spouse's Name: Jennie
Marriage year: 1889
Marital Status: Married
Years Married: 11
Residence: Clam Union Township, Missaukee, Michigan
Occupation:
Household Members:
Herman Schoo 42; 1882 immigrant
Jennie Schoo 30; 1881 immigrant
Christina Schoo 10
Tennis Schoo 8
Frederik Schoo 6
John Henry Schoo 3
Harm H Schoo 1
(daughter Jennie, 7, was living next door with Uncle/Aunt Willem & Geertje de Zeeuw)

I have to stop, but if you have questions, e-mail me.

Joan carlsonjm@hotmail.com

I am looking for the parents name of Jennie Mulder. She was born in the Netherlands on May 1870 according to the US 1900 census. She married Herman Schoo about 1888 in the US. I think her parent's names are Teunis Mulder and Antje Vis but I can not find any sources.

John, thank you for all the info. I never though of dropping the "h" from the last name and doing a search. If you are related to the Huttenga family from Missaukee County, then we are related somehow. Send me an email at mjhuttenga@hotmail.com so we can find out how. Thanks again.

Grace was born Geesje Smit, daughter of Roelof Smit and Aaltje Mulder. She was born on 28 September 1883 in the village of Hijken, county of Beilen, province of Drenthe, the Netherlands and named after her maternal grandmother:

Bron: Burgerlijke stand - Geboorte
Archieflocatie: Drents Archief
Algemeen Toegangnr: 0165.003
Inventarisnr: 1883
Gemeente: Beilen
Soort akte: geboorte (Birth record)
Aktenummer: 123
Aangiftedatum: 28-09-1883
Kind: Geesje Smit
Geslacht: V
Geboortedatum: 28-09-1883
Geboorteplaats: Hijken (Beilen)
Vader: Roelof Smit
Moeder: Aaltje Mulder
Nadere informatie: beroep vader: grofsmid; leeftijd vader: 38; beroep moeder: zonder

Her father was a blacksmith (grofsmid) and when the family immigrated in 1900 (arriving in Ellis Island on 18 April 1900 on the ship "S.S. Amsterdam") his occupation was listed as "Smith" (short for blacksmith) and apparently the american name for his occupation and surname stuck and the family name became "Smith". Geesje/Grace's father was married once before and when his first wife died he married Aaltje Mulder:

Bron: Burgerlijke stand - Huwelijk
Archieflocatie: Drents Archief
Algemeen Toegangnr: 0166.003
Inventarisnr: 1881
Gemeente: Beilen
Soort akte: Huwelijksakte (Marriage record)
Aktenummer: 27
Datum: 18-06-1881 (18 June 1881)
Bruidegom: Roelof Smit
Geboorteplaats: Zuidwolde (birth place)
Bruid: Aaltje Mulder
Geboorteplaats: Westerbork (Birthplace)
Vader bruidegom: Jan Roelofs Smit
Moeder bruidegom: Roelofje Wolters Brands
Vader bruid: Jan Mulder
Moeder bruid: Geesje Wesseling
Nadere informatie: bruidegom: 35 jaar.; bruid: 26 jaar.; weduwnaar van Jakobje Bos (name of his first wife)

When the family immigrated in 1900 there was a total of 8 in the family; the parents, Roelof and Aaltje; Geesje/Grace; and 5 more children:

Jan, male, born 25 March 1882 in Hijken
Harm, male, born 26 September 1885 in Hijken
Roelof, male, born 17 May 1890 in Hijken
Jan, male, born 13 March 1893 in Hijken
Roelofje, female, born 13 February 1897 in Hijken

There was also a son Jan, born 4 Janaury 1888 in Hijken and died 6 March 1893 at age 5. A week later Aaltje delivers another baby boy and they name him Jan (not unusual to name another child after a deceased child with the same name to keep the naming pattern intact). There are 2 sons with the name Jan in the family because the father of Roelof and the father of Aaltje are both named Jan. Since the naming of children after the parents parents was mostly strictly adhered to, in this case the family ended up with two children with the first name of Jan.

Roelof Smit had no child with his first wife Jakobje Bos that lived beyond infancy. Their only child lived a few months after birth and died 2 days after Jakobje died.

Roelof Smit was born 21 July 1845 in Kerkenbosch, county of Zuidwolde, province of Drenthe, the Netherlands:

Bron: Burgerlijke stand - Geboorte
Archieflocatie Drents Archief
Algemeen Toegangnr: 0165.033
Inventarisnr: 1845
Gemeente: Zuidwolde (county)
Soort akte: geboorte (birth record)
Aktenummer: 37
Aangiftedatum: 23-07-1845
Kind Roelof Smit
Geslacht: M
Geboortedatum: 21-07-1845 (date of birth)
Geboorteplaats: Kerkenbosch (Zuidwolde)
Vader: Jan Roelofs Smit
Moeder: Roelofje Wolters Brands
Nadere informatie: beroep vader: grofsmid; leeftijd vader: 26; leeftijd moeder: 28

His father was also a blacksmith.

Aaltje Mulder, the mother of Geesje/Grace, was born 10 April 1855 in Baling, county of Westerbork, province of Drenthe, the Netherlands:

Bron: Burgerlijke stand - Geboorte
Archieflocatie Drents Archief
Algemeen Toegangnr: 0165.030
Inventarisnr: 1855
Gemeente: Westerbork (county)
Soort akte: geboorte (Birth)
Aktenummer: 14
Aangiftedatum: 11-04-1855
Kind Aaltje Mulder
Geslacht: V
Geboortedatum: 10-04-1855 (birth date)
Geboorteplaats: Baling (Westerbork)
Vader Jan Mulder
Moeder Geesje Wesseling
Nadere informatie beroep vader: landbouwer; leeftijd vader: 30; beroep moeder: zonder

Jan Mulder, father of Geesje, was a farmer.

If there is more information that I can send you or help you with please let me know. There is much more to see regarding the Smit/Smith family and the Mulder family on the internet. I also have Huttenga family in my tree from the Missaukee County area.

John

I am looking for information on the ancestors of Grace Smith who was married to Fred Workman (Freerk Werkman) in Missaukee County, MI. I know much of Fred, not of Grace other than her father was named Ralph and mother was Alice (don't know her maiden name). Fred and Grace co-founded Falmouth Reformed Church. Would appreciate any information as they are my great-grandparents and I have hit a brick wall with her side of the family.

Kate,

What a pleasant surprise to read your post.

I have not looked for information on Benjamin Rowe and his wife Susanna Kaiser for many years.

I only came across your post because I was trying to look for some information for one of Charles Henry/Henry Charles Pollington's descendants who lives in Missaukee County, Michigan.

I am the wife of Leroy Good who is a grandson of Malinda Angeline Rowe and William Harvey Good. Malinda Angeline Rowe was the daughter of Benjamin Rowe and Susanna Kaiser. My husband and I live in Ogemaw County, Michigan where Malinda and William Harvey Good last lived.

My records show that Susanna Kaiser Rowe died on April 22, 1921 in the Detroit, Michigan area. She was living at the time with her daughter Amanda (Mandy) Rowe Hyatt. I have a copy of the death certificate from Wayne County, Michigan, and a copy of an obituary from "The McBain Chronicle" of McBain, Michigan.

The obituary states, in part, that "Susanna Kiser was born in Dewerham, Germany, February 24, 1842, came to this country with her parents at the age of 13 years. She was married to Benjamin Rowe of Logan, Canada, July 3rd, 1862, 10 children were born to them. Six of whom survive."

Note: I believe Susanna's obituary should have read "went to Canada with her parents at the age of 13 years". I base that on the 1900 Census.

I only have the names of the six children who were named in the obituary, plus the name of one foster daughter.

1. John H. Rowe whose wife may have been Zella, maiden name unknown
2. Lillian Rowe who married Charles Henry/Henry Charles Pollington
3. Frederick Rowe whose wife was Mary, maiden name possibly Rowe
4. Malinda Angeline Rowe who married William Harvey Good
5. Jemima Rowe who married Lincoln Hess
6. Amanda Rowe who married Dave Hyatt
> Foster daughter, Mae Stearns who married Howard Hull

The 1900 Census of Riverside Township, Missaukee County, Michigan shows that Susanna had ten children with only six surviving at that time. That Census also shows that Benjamin Rowe was a Naturalized Citizen and that both he and his wife had been in the U. S. for 23 years. The year of immigration to the U. S. was listed as 1876 for both of them. You mentioned the 1900 Census in your post so I assume you already know this information.

I have a photo of some of the tombstones in Riverside Cemetery located in Riverside Township, Missaukee County, Michigan. One photo is the Rowe tombstone and another is the tombstone for Charles H. and Lillie Pollington. They can be scanned in my computer and e-mailed to you, if you are interested.

I would appreciate copies of the documents you wrote about in your post.

Because of time restraints and other obligations I will not be able to give you much more information than what is written here.

It might be easier if you contact me direct. My e-mail address is: mesg@centurytel.net

Mary Ellen
The Missaukee County Historical Society has a DVD available which includes many names and photos of the Mitchell Bros lumber company in Jennings. In the early 1920's lumbering came to an end in Jennings. The town of Jennings was moved including church's and homes to Cadillac, Mi. The Lutheran Church was moved to Lake City. The moving of this church was followed by newspapers all over the United States. A special moving trailer was built in Cadillac.

For many years Jennings was called a ghost town, but only because it used to have over 2,000 inhabitants, the population went from 2,000 to about 200. The photos of Jennings in its heyday and after the mill closed are shocking. The lake in Jennings was polluted for decades and only recently was the lake clean up completed.

Edson Blaisdell is my ggggrandfather and I am just starting research... I know very little other than he married Adelia Sampson and his father was born in Indiana (according to the 1900 us federal census) Also according to the same census, Adelia Sampson's father was born in Germany and her Mother was born in Switzerland. I suspect that she is the Anna Sampson burried with the Blaisdells in the Highland Township cemetery... Any confirmation or direction would be greatly appreciated.

to Kathy Mcdowell re the death of Hiram Wisners parents -killed by Indians. There is a reference to a settler named Wisner being stabbed to death by an Indian near Three Rivers, Mich(just south of Kalamazoo). The book is
AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL NOTES by E Lakin Brown published in 1905, 57 pgs.
In another post I read that you were looking for Dekay Wisner from Orange Co NY. My GGG grandfather was Cornelius D Wisner born in Orange Co, NY in 1792 or 96. He came to Hillsdale Co Mich in about 1857. No one is sure what his middle name was but it has been suggested that it might be Dekay, Derr, or Duboise. Would love to share info with you. You can email me at jerwisner@juno.com Thanks Gerald Wisner

Albert EISING was the brother of my gr-gr-grandfather, Egbert Eising. Their parents were Jan (John) Eising and Hilligje KOK Eising (there are several variations on Hilligje's first name, including "Hillichje").

Here's the information I have, though most of it is from undocumented genealogies and family records (I'm in the process now of trying to confirm things--that's how I came across your post!):

Jan Eising: born 3 February 1839, Hijken, Drenthe, Netherlands; died 5 August 1903, Lake City, Missaukee Co., Michigan.

Hilligje Kok: b. 2 June 1851, Beilen, Drenthe, Netherlands; d. 6 November 1927, Lake City.

Jan Eising and Hilligje Kok were married on 5 September 1878 in Westerbork, Drenthe, Netherlands. She was his second wife; his first wife was Grietje REININK. Jan Eising and Grietje Reinink had six children before she died on 15 August 1876, in Westerbork. Several of those children came to the US, marrying spouses named Schepers, Herweyer, and Hoekwater.

Jan Eising's father was Egbert Eising, b. 20 March 1803, Zweelo, Drenthe, Netherlands. His mother was Geesje Jans SCHEPERS, b. 8 March 1803 and died 10 April 1872, both in Beilen, Drenthe.

Hilligje Kok's father was Willem Kok, b. 30 November 1828 and d. 12 December 1918, both in Beilen, Drenthe. Her mother was Geertje KREEFT, b. 3 March 1829, also in Beilen.

We know the names of Hilligje Kok's grandparents, though nothing else: her father Willem Kok's parents were Jan Kok and Hilligien CORNELIS; her mother Geertje Kreeft's parents were Roelof Kreeft and Marrigje TAP.

Albert Eising was the second of seven children born to Jan Eising and Hilligje Kok:
1) Egbert Eising, b. 1879, d. 1926--my gr-gr-grandfather
2) Albert Eising, b. 11 October 1880
3) Gerrit Eising, b. 23 October 1882, d. 13 March 1959
4) Aaltje/Alice Eising CATTS, b. 9 August 1885, d. 1978
5) Magrieta/Mary Eising, b. 14 September 1887, d. 1977
6) Jan/John Eising, b. 31 January 1890, d. 3 March 1970
7) Hillichje/Helen Eising BRINKS, b. 15 October 1893, d. 25 June 1953

Gerrit, Mary, and John Eising all stayed single their whole lives, and together they owned and ran a farm.
My grandfather was Harm Eising, b. 28 April 1912, d. 12 November 1988. When his father Egbert Eising died in 1926, leaving behind three orphaned children, my grandfather lived with the single aunt and uncles, and so did at least one sister, some of the time.

My grandfather's family:

--Egbert Eising, 1879-1926
--Jane/Jennie VELTING Eising, b. 7 February 1886, Clam Union Twp., Missaukee Co., Michigan; she died in February 1915, in Prosper, Missaukee Co. My grandfather's earliest memory was seeing his mother in her coffin; he was two years old.
--Margaret Eising KOSTER, b. 29 November 1907, d. 25 February 1956
--John E. Eising, b. 1 December 1909, d. 1924
--Harm Eising, 1912-1988
--Helen Eising VANDE POL, b. 30 November 1914, d. fairly recently

If you want I can send you "reports" in a variety of forms, with all of this information--let me know!

Jim Postema

I met with Geraldine Vincent Fox in Falmouth, MI 4 or 5 years ago before she died. She had boxes and boxes of family pictures and of Falmouth. I went through 2 or 3 looking for my family relatives who lived across the street from them - Vanderwal - and sold farm implements. I took a couple of them. One is a picture of the Vincents in front of their gas station/store/post office. I would be glad to share.
Her son still is in the area. Hopefully he saved all the boxes of pcitures.
Doris Lucas

I see it has been a while since queries have been posted about this family.
I am interested in finding more information if you have it on the siblings & descendants of Lillie Rowe and Charles Henry Pollington.
My line is connected to Lillie's parents Benjamin Rowe and Susanna Kaiser from Perth County, Ontario Canada.

I have a copy of Benjamin's father's Last Will & Testament, death cert, and census. The Will revealed the names of Benjamin's siblings. I am descended from Benjamin's older brother.

Benjm jr was born in Suffolk. His parents Sarah Muttit and Benjamin Rowe emigrated from England circa 1830 and landed in Ontario Canada. They farmed near what is now Oshawa, Durham County area. Benjamin jr moved to Perth County with 3 of his brothers and leased/owned land in 1851 & 1861.

Susanna Kaiser was born in Hesse Germany. Her parents farmed in Perth County near Benjamin jr's land holdings. It appears that Benj & Susanna immigrated to US circa 1876 according to the 1900 Census of Riverside, Missaukee, MI.

I recently found Benjamin Rowe, Lillie and Charles Henry Pollington, & other Pollington family buried in Riverside Cemetery Missaukee. I don't have anything on Susanna Rowe's death or burial.

Is anyone able to take digital photos of the headstones if they exist? ... before the snow falls ;)

Would be grateful for any assistance with descendant information or family photos.

Cheers,
Kate

Am looking for information on Hendrik Bowmaster/Bouwmeester/Bouwmeister, son of Berend Bouwmeester/Bouwmeister and Jantje Nijboer Bouwmeester/Bouwmeister. He was born 28 October 1840 in Staphorst, Overijssel, Netherlands and came to the U.S. in 1848 on the ship George Duckwitz. He may have married Hendrijke/Henrietta Rotgers/Rutgers.

I have found a Hendrijke/Henrietta Rotgers/Rutgers who was married first to Hendrick Bowmaster, then to Hendrick Handlogten. Do not know if that is the same Henry/Hendrik I am looking for. Would apprecite knowing if there is a link there or not.
