I am looking for information on either family. Mary Wiszowaty was my great-grandmother. I found her in the 1910 census. She lived in Ingallston, MI. She either lived with her daughter Kate Dezinski and her family (Kate's husband was John Dezinski and their son Sylvester, 2) or they lived with her. Mary's son Antone also lived with them. Any information would be appreciated as I have come to a standstill in my research on Mary. She may have re-married after the 1910 census.

I am looking for the family of Herman Keil. It is listed as Kile in the 1880 census of Menominee county in Michigan. He was born in Prussia but grew up in Wheatfield, New York-the son of Gottlieb and Teresa Ode Keil. His sister Rosa Keil Lockman and brother Henry Keil remained in Western New York. I have found emigration records for Gottlieb, Teresa, and Herman. I am a member of the family in the Buffalo, New York area. I have not yet located his marriage record to Mary but hopefully I will soon find them. Also a daughter Minne was born in this area before the family moved to Michigan where two other children were born-another Rosa and Henry. In the 1900 census of Meneminee County I find his son Henry Keil in the household of his sister Minnie however I am uncertain of the spelling of her married name. I would like to connect with this branch of my family.

Searching for marriage information on Gladys Rymal b. 1895 in Menominee - married Emory Uhl

I am trying to find any information on Gladys Rymal b. 1895 who married Emory Uhl. I don't have much information about this marriage...however, I do know that Gladys' parents were George W Rymal and Ethel Symes. I can also place Gladys' two children by Emory Uhl in the 1930 census living with their grandfather, George and his 2nd wife, Rosalie, in Michigan...but I cannot find Gladys in either the 1920 or 1930 census records...I did notice that one of her children was born in Indiana..and the other in Michigan..but I still cannot find Gladys in the 1920 or 1930 census records. If there is anyone out there that can provide me with any help on where else to look for records about her, I would greatly appreciate it. I have found her SSDI record (which was not much help) and looked on the LDS website as well as the other normal websites...but no luck...I would appreciate any and all help. Thank you so very much.

I am hoping someone might try looking up a marriage I have not been able to verify.

My maternal grandparents lived on Washington Island, WI and according to the old newspaper article got married in Menominee. I couldn't find it for Wisconsin, so I'm thinking it must have been in Michigan. I would be very grateful if someone could lookup about that date to see if my suspicions are correct. Here is their info. Thanks very much for your efforts in advance.

Thora Moe, born November 2, 1873 in Manitowoc, WI and
Charles (Carl) Martin Paulsen, born October 4, 1860 in Christiania, Norway married August 2, 1902.

I wrote the Cemetery "Treasurer" but received such an ambiguous letter back that I'm not certain who in the family is interred at the cemetery. No names were mentioned in the letter to me! This is my mother's aunt and uncle. They "disappeared" from WI in the 1930's to probably follow the logging business into MI. Thank you for any help.

Hello, I'm hoping someone can tell me (or point me to where I might find) what information might be available on the various naturalization records in Menominee County. My husband's great grandfather was naturalized there in 1888 or 1898. Using LDS records I found that the "Intent to Naturalize" records contain only the person's name and country from which they emigrated.

The LDS library also lists microfilms for "Naturalization Record". Are these records likely to contain more information like birth date, city of birth, etc.?
Thanks
Patricia
Champaign, IL

This is a longshot but I hope there is someone in Menominee County that can help.

In the 1900 Census, West-Half of Spalding Township, Menominee County, MI:

Jones, William, born Feb. 1862 in MI, 38y/o, Farmer
Jones, Ida, wife, born March 1870 in NY, 30y/o
Jones, William, son, born Oct. 1891, MI, 8 y/o
Jones, Ira, son, born Jan. 1894, MI, 6y/o
McCormick, Phebe, mother, born Oct. 1847, NY, Widow, 52 y/o

My question concerns Phebe McCormick. She is the mother of William Jones, born 1862. Phebe was married to Jerome Jones somewhere in the Lower Pennisula. Not sure why she is listed with her maiden name in this census. Looking in the 1910 Census, I find William and Ida and their children living in Wayne County, MI but there is no sign of Phebe, under the Jones name or the McCormick name in that census or subsequent ones.

Is there someone who could look for a death record for a Phebe Jones/McCormick in Menominee between 1900-1910? I know she could have died anywhere between Menominee and Wayne counties between 1900-1910 but this is my only hope of finding out when and where she died and this county seems to be a realistic place to start.

Thank-you.

John

Seasonal Lumber Workers

Hello List,

Can someone recommend a book(s), a website or any other source that discusses the employment of seasonal workers in the lumber industries in the time frame around 1875-1885.

My g-gf purchased a farm in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin in 1878 and was a farmer for his entire life. He raised seven children on his farm, and six of them were born there. However, his first child was born in Menominee, Michigan on 21 Apr 1879 (as is recorded on her marriage record and her death certificate).

My g-gf was born in Bohemia and his family background was in agriculture not lumbering or fishing. He was 29 years old in 1879 (his name was Ondrej Savlik = Andrew Shavlik, other variations are Sawlik, Schawlik, Schavlik and Schaflik).

It is my theory that my g-gf went to Menominee to work the lumber industry during the winter to earn money. I do not think he had many animals on his farm and if he did, he probably could have left them with a neighbor. I do not know if there was much work to be done on the farm, the ground would be frozen, there was no machinery to maintain...so it seems logical that he would look for other work.

I assume the winter was the busy season in the lumber industry for felling trees and hauling them to the river banks.

There were no other family members in the US at this time, so he was not visiting family. I do not know if Menominee County had much of a Czech community back then, such that he may have been visiting friends.

I appreciate any help....Tom ----- email: pan_mila@yahoo.com

Hello all,

I am very interested in learning more information about my great grandfather, Arthur Valoe (listed as Valve on the 1920 census.) He came to the United States from Finland via Canada in 1909, at the age of 9 or 10. I just found out through research tonight that he had a brother, JOHN VALVE, born in around 1911, and a sister, MARTHA VALVE, born around 1916, both born in Michigan.

So far I have determined that his mother's name was ANNA VALVE, and she was a widow before the 1920 census was released. In 1920 she lived in Nadeau, MI. She had a brother named SULO KOLAHMANE, with whom my great grandfather traveled to the US. SULO KOLAHMANE (also spelled Kolemahn) lived with HUKKI and AGDA HOLAPPA in 1920. Hukki and Agda were the parents of GERTRUDE, AGNES, and GEORGE Holappa.

If you are related to any of these people or have any information I would DEFINITELY appreciate a response or email... this is solving an age old mystery!!!

Thanks =)
L

He served on the steamer John Gehm. Death was sudden. I need help, please, to find out how he died. The Spauldings had lived in Alpena for some time, and his half brother had drowned at Spectacle Reef Lighthouse. Please, will someone find the obit for that date and let me know what happened?

Hello all,

My Great-Grandfather, Hans Strandquist, emigrated from Sweden in 1903. On the ship's manifest, he indicates that he is going to Bagley, Michigan to meet up with his father, Ole Steffenson. On Hans' death certificate, Ole Steffenson is listed as his father, but there's no ther information given. I have no other information on Ole.

So I'm looking for any information on an Ole Steffenson who emigrated from Sweden prior to November 1903. I was not able to find Ole in either the 1900 or the 1910 censuses.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

-Blaise

Does anyone have information on the family of Ernest and Augusta BEYER of Menominee, MI.

My ggrandmother was Lena BEYER a daughter of Ernest BEYER.. My grandmother was 12 years old when her mother, Lena, died and not much is known about this side of the family.

From what I have been told, Ernest came from Germany in the late 1800's with his 1st wife, who died when Lena was a child. Lena's aunt, Augusta (her mother's sister), came over from Germany to help raise Lena and married Ernest. I believe Ernest and Augusta had the following children:

Ernest, Otto, Henry (Edward H), Anna H, Emma (Mary E.), and Rose BEYER

If anyone has any information on this family, I would happy to hear from you.

Best Regards,
Jim
I suspect they had more children in Michigan. Francois Xavier (Frank) had died prior to 1903.

Would appreciate hearing from anyone researching this family.

Ida GERBER 02 Dec 1927 in Buffalo, Erie Co., New York; died unknown, possibly November 1970 in Menominee, Menominee Co., MI. John A. Benzing was the son of John E. Benzing and Agnes TROMBLEY.

Ida GERBER; b. abt 1905 in Buffalo, Erie Co., New York; died unknown, possibly July 1970 in Menominee, Menominee Co., MI. Ida was of Lancaster, New York at the time of her marriage, in 1927. Ida GERBER was the daughter of Frederick Gerber and Elizabeth KABLE or CABLE.

I do not know when John and Ida removed from New York or when they settled in Michigan. Family tradition relates that John A. Benzing once had a lucrative business in Chicago, IL.

SSDI data for John and Ida states their Death Residence Locality (DRL) as Menominee, Menominee Co., MI. I understand the SSDI DRL doesn't mean John and Ida actually died in Menominee, but that's the best information I've got.

Any information about the places of death and burial for John and Ida GERBER Benzing would be much appreciated.

Paul E. But knows nothing of her grandparents.

In the census records - it states that Malvina was born in Michigan.

Malvina married Alcide Mayville in Escanaba, MI in 1903 or 1905. One listing of their marriage record lists her as Milvina Gondreau. I have no idea where that name comes from and neither does the one surviving daughter.

I ordered a search from the State of MI of Michigan birth records from 1883 - 1885 and they found no Malvina Hebert.

Any help would be very appreciated!

I hit a brick wall!!!! My family all are from Menominee yet, I am unable to locate any info on them from this area..Here is my dilemma. My gr-grandfather was born as Michael Panzram March 17 1891 reportedly in Menominee, yet, the records office says they have no record. His family was : parents: John(Loraine)Panzram
Mary Panzram nee Engeldinger, Bauer. Siblings:
Nicolaus Bauer, Clara Bauer,Lizabeth Bauer,Laurence Panzram and Edward Panzram. Family story is he was adopted by his brother Nicolaus and changed his name to Bowers, yet, it is possible that Mary was pregnant with him when she married Panzram so he might actually be a Bauer, I cannot locate any info on any of these people from Menominee. Can anyone Please help. The family lived in Menominee possibly from 1890 to at least 1910.

Anton ECKERT immigrated from Austria/Bohemia in 1895 and settled in Menominee with his wife, Barbara. These were the only two Eckert families in Menominee in 1896 and I’m trying to determine whether Sam and Anton were brothers and where in Austria they immigrated from. I would love to hear from anyone researching the Eckert’s in Menominee.

OBIT NEEDED HENRY WILSON SPAULDING NOV 8, 1926

This is my grandmother's brother, and I just found out he died somehow near Menominee MI, 11-8-1926. Captain Henry Wilson (Will) Spaulding died somehow, perhaps drowned. He served on the steamer John Gehm. Death was sudden. I need help, please, to find out how he died. The Spauldings had lived in Alpena for some time, and his half brother had drowned at Spectacle Reef Lighthouse. Please, will someone find the obit for that date and let me know what happened?
