She died before 2010, and her birthday would have been either late 1920's or early 1930's. She is a relative I found out in the 1970's.
Abraham L Swansby in December 1, 1908 was appointed the rural mail carrier for Hamlin Lake. He was very instrumental in organizing the farmers to help construct better dirt roads around by the upper lake's resorts. There is a photograph of him on the front page of the Ludington Chroncile 12/2/1908 paper - good looking fellow.

Lyn

I'm trying to find the burial location of one of Richard and Elizabeth's 10 children. Specifically Herbert, who married my Aunt Thelma (maiden name Coffey).

Herbert and Thelma also had a son. The 1940 Census lists his first name as Hubert (could be a transcription error) born about 1934. Other than this census entry I haven't been able to find any trace of Herbert and Thelma's son. Family lore has it that he died under mysterious circumstances, but another relative said that he'd committed suicide.

Are there any Groening's still residing in the Ludington/Mason County area?

I'm hoping one of them might be able to shed some light on where Herbert was buried. Chances are Thelma is buried next to him. It would also be nice to find out where their son is buried.

I am Robert Wappler's daughter. My mother was Betty Barnhart Wappler, Robert's first wife. Joan Firzlaff is still living, about 85 years old now. Who is your great-great grandparent? I know little of my father's family. Joan can be reached at PO Box 223, Manistee, MI 49660.

My MG-G-Grandfather Wm J Conger Sr moved to Ludington after the Civil War and had a bigamist marriage to Iola Coon. They had children: Guy, Almira, and Ida. The children's last resting places have been found. However, no one knows where Wm and Iola are buried. He died July 31 1887 and Iola in May 1886 both in Ludington. I took a guess and entered Wm on findagrave.com as buried in Lakeview because Almira and Guy are buried there.
Can you check where they are REALLY buried?
I'm not a member of ancestry.com yet, working on my family tree on my mother's side (Helen Kloss Welbes and my dad was Ambrose Welbes). Gust and Elizabeth were my dad's parents. I have a whole book someone made up of Welbes ancestry back to the 1600's. If you can leave me a message on here, I check in here a few times a week. Or my e-mail is carleneah@frontier.com. Would love to hear from you!! Thanks - Carlene Welbes Horness

They were first in WI before moving to MI in 1888. I think they arrived in the US 1873-1875 but do not know the port of entry. I know many came to TX first and moved later to WI.
Do you live in TX?
Lynn

Lynn, we just might be related. What was the date of arrival of your Vaclaviks? Mine show as arrivng in New Orleans, May 9th, 1870, on the Ship FRANKFURT. The name was spelled WALLAWIK.
I have come across several different spellings of my Vaclavik's. WALLAWIK , WACLAVICK, WACLAVIC, WACLAWIK, WACLAVIK - to name those I found right now.
My uncle spelled his VATZLAVICK, another uncle spelled it VACLAVIK [the original way],
My Dad spelled ours WATZLAVICK. Some of these came at different times, and different years. However, the lst paragraph are the ones I am searching for. The ones who came over May 9, 1870. I had no idea there were some in WI and MI. Do YOU by chance have a Ship's Passenger List? I am interested in what you have, to share, Julie

MY last name was WATZLAVICK [english spelling] for VACLAVIK. Grandfather was FRANK, GGrandfather was FRANK, GGGrandfather was Peter. The name was also mispelled...I have a book showing how it was spelled...It was similar, or exact, to what you show.
Dear Wendy, Will remind Joan as soon as I finish your note. I have not searched NARA yet. I have been trying to find what I can via the net and free. I have found that AltaVista (search engine) gives me more info. I have found some hints looking under +genealogy +wisconsin +german +immigrants and why their data is so hard to locate. I believe most of the records are in a private collection which was donated to a library in Green Bay,WI.
It seems there was an argument as to the resposibility of collecting data when this and MI was the Northwest Territory. The upper half of MI was WI for awhile.
The Library used to do lookups for free but now there is a fee.
I know Joan spent time searching in both states and turned up nil. I still have relatives in MI,although not in Ludington, and they could get copies when in Lansing. My uncle would have an easy time getting copies of birth certs because he is a direct descendent of Marie Frances Vaclavik. Because of the Freedom of Info Act you have to prove who you are to get copies of birth certs. I did get a copy of Marie Vaclaviks obit from the Ludington paper. I did this over the net. Adolf's obit might be trickier because it is much earlier and he died in Amber township on the farm. It should have made the papers because the house burned during the wake because someone left a candle burning.

I will pass on anything to Joan. My cousin Jimmy is going back to MI in June. His dad is the uncle I speak of and maybe he can do some good.
Later,
Lynn

Hi Lynn:

Yes. My cousin, Joan, told me about you. I lived in Appleton, WI for 18 mos. had I known Vaclavik's settled in Kewaunee for a bit I'd have checked it out. My grandfather Hendrickson who married my grandmother (Dolores Vaclavik-Hendrickson). Grandpa worked at the C&O railroad and spent much time in Milwaukee, Kewaunee, etc. I know he met grandma in Michigan though. In Ludington where her father Joseph Vaclavik owned a tavern. As luck would have it Joan picked my grandmother up in Ludington just last week and brought her back to Washington to stay with her awhile. You should make contact with her soon so she can pick my grandma's brain for awhile.

Good luck. I'm sorry I cannot be more helpful but I get most my info from Joan, too.

When I lived in Washington, DC I spent some time at the National Archives researching the Hendrickson's never got to the Vaclavik's. I know you can access the National Archives on line, now. Have you tried?

Thanks for writing.

Wendy

Dear Wendy, We are indeed related! I am in contact with Joan at least weekly. The problem is finding documentation of the Vaclaviks while they lived in WI and after they moved to MI,Amber Township in 1888. I do not want to use Joan's documentation-as she has found the "source"-without contributing something in return. We seem to be stymied at every turn.
I admit to working on my mother's side of the family a lot more because I can find data.
My grandmother,Marie (Mary)Francis Vaclavik married Cecil Taylor. They lived in Lansing and had a grocery store for many years. I still have first cousins all over the state but none are interested in genealogy. Actually, one cousin did try and got very frustrated finding nothing.
I will pass on anything I find to you and Joan. I think the records are in a private collection in Green Bay, WI.
Lynn

My great grandmother was Martha Witte Vaclavik she married Joseph Vaclavik and resided on 5th street in Ludington, MI.

My grandmother was one of Martha and Joseph's children (Virgil and Lawrence Vaclavik and Margurite Vaclavik Case were at least three others.) Virgil and his family still live in Ludington. Lawrence married Elanor and both are now deceased. The moved to Brea, California where their children--including Cecilia still live. I have Cecilia's email address somewhere. My grandmother Dolores Vaclavik married Hugo Hendrickson and lived in Ludington until grandpa retired from the C&O railroad then moved to Washington state.
No, I do not know where they were born in Bohemia but he "Franticek" died in Ludington, Mason County, Michigan according to the records I have. As a very young, inexperience geneaologist I don't even have my references. My grandmother was probably the source but I can't be positive. I have these notes for him "He died In Ludington, Mason County, Michigan while visiting daughter there. His wife is buried in Catholic Cemetary near the old homestead in Alaska, Wisconsin. There is a large marker. They were married pre 1857 in Europe." My great-grandmother, Mary Agnes SEMRADEK Ruzicka was born in Neuestopov, Bohemia but the birth was registered in Tabor, Bohemia. Her grandmother, Mary KLOTZ Adams was born in Prague, Bohemia. Maybe this would help. Is this the same Zuzanek family you are looking for? I would be interested in more information...
