I was going through some old photos of my grandmother's - she grew up in Bear Lake in the late 1890's, and there is a photo of a schoolhouse with a front porch & bell tower with about 45 students in front. If anyone thinks they can identify the school, email me and I'll email you the scanned photo.

thanks!
Claudia Breland
ccbreland@comcast.net

Nancy Ann RICHARD

RICHARD, Nancy Ann
Age 73
Of Bear Lake

A long-time journalist, publicist and civic worker, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008 in Munson Hospice, Traverse City, after a short bout with stomach cancer. She was born August 27, 1934 in Benton Harbor, the daughter of Harry P. and Adelia (Radesky) Jeschke, graduated from St. Joseph public schools and Benton Harbor Community College, and attended the University of Michigan. She also attended the Interlochen Arts Academy. She worked until 1962 for the old St. Joseph Herald-Press as a reporter and section editor. On June 10, 1961, she was married to Tim Richard, who survives. From 1962-67, she spent about five years at Kalamazoo College in two jobs - a news bureau writer and administrator in the foreign study office, making students' travel arrangements. When the couple moved to Livonia, she was a publicist for the Clarenceville School District, handling public information for its popular jazz series with name bands like Stan Kenton and Buddy Rich. Later she served on the board of the Livonia Symphony Orchestra, chairing the Young Artists Competition. Many winners became professional musicians, and one became a first chair in the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. After they retired to Bear Lake in 1999, she joined the Lioness Club and served as president. She served on the 2007 Bear Lake Days Committee and on the Lioness arts and crafts exhibit panel.. Her most recent project was to chair the Dog-Gondest Doggie contest during Bear Lake Days. She said the inspiration came from their Australian Shepherd, Chester, who thought people should have more fun activities with their dogs. Surviving besides her husband are a brother, James (Linda) Jeschke, and a nephew, Drew Jeschke, all of St. Joseph; and several cousins scattered around the country. Nancy enjoyed foreign travel, visiting England, Scotland, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, France, Malta, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Chile and Thailand. Cremation has taken place. No memorial service is scheduled. Memorial contributions in Nancy's name may be made to Homeward Bound Animal Shelter, PO Box 144, Manistee, MI 49660. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Oak Grove Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Bear Lake.
Published in the Kalamazoo Gazette on 6/12/2008.

I was at the county clerks office during the past summer to inquire about naturalization records. I was told that they had been burned in a fire. I'm at a loss as to where these people came from other than Germany. I have census and vital record information for Charles BRUESCH and Joseph Amundus QUEIL, which indicates they came to America in the 1880's. If anyone might know how to find out their place of origin in Germany, please let me know. Thank you!

MANISTEE HISTORY IN FISHING, ALFRED NORDSTRAND, b. Aug 25 1897

I am researching some information about my uncle, Alfred Nordstrand, born probably in Manistee, Michigan on August 25, 1897. His parents were Nels and Carrie Nordstrand, who had immigrated to the US in 1893.

I have information that places Al in charge of a fishing tug, the Sir Knight, based in Manistee, but no time period. The owner of the tug was Robert Scott, Jr. of Alpena, Michigan.

By 1930, I can see Al living in Alpena, Michigan with his wife and 3 of his children.

I'd like to see if there is more information about Al during his years in Manistee. For some reason, in Manistee, the census shows his parents as being Swedish. By 1930, in Alpena, the census in 1930 says his parents are from Norway. Because I can see the SS death information, I know this is the same man.

Is there any local information that would mention Al, or his marriage to Louisa? I'd appreciate any help that is given. I'm writing a little story about Al as a fisherman in Alpena for the local library, and would like to start at the beginning, where he obviously started his career in the trade.

May 14, 1907; d. Nov 6, 1986. This looks like it could be my Aunt Bea. She married a Leonard Harder. Can anyone help me with an obit and/or death record? I am hoping that they might be mentioned in her obit.

Some Manistee County census records show "Posen" as the place of origin for Polish immigrants. Documents from that time rarely contained any information more specific than the vague term Posen. The Poznan Marriage Indexing Project helps descendants of those who left the Poznan area in the 19th century to identify the actual town or parish their ancestors left when departing for America.
John P. WOOD, architect, has been a resident of Manistee since 1866. He is a native of Berrien County, Mich., and at an early age learned the carpenter trade. In December, 1863, he enlisted in Company L, Third Michigan Cavalry, and remained in the service until February, 1866, having passed through thirty-six battles. After leaving the service, Mr. WOOD came to Manistee, and followed his trade as a carpenter and builder, but for the past four years has been confining his attention more to architecture.

From History of Manistee, Mason and Oceana Counties, Michigan, Illustrated.

Edward D. WHEELER, one of our leading lumbermen of Manistee, was born in Southfield, Mass., May 8, 1843. When fourteen years of age he went to Morrison, Ill., where he was clerk in a drug store for a time, and afterwards was in a store in Joliet. In the Spring of 1860 he went to Pikes Peak, and after an absence of nine months returned to Joliet, and in the Spring of 1861 came to Manistee, where he has since advanced to the front rank in commercial prominence. For three years after coming to Manistee he was in the employ of John CANFIELD. In 1864 he went back to Joliet and remained a year. He then returned to Manistee, and was in the employ of Mr. ENGELMANN. In the Fall of 1871 he went into partnership with Mr. John CANFIELD in the mill property near the mouth of the river, the firm being CANFIELD & WHEELER. Subsequently he became senior member of the firm of WHEELER, MAGILL & CO., their mill being on what is known as Blackbird Island. Mr. WHEELER is emphatically a practical man, and one of the most successful managers of mill property.

From History of Manistee, Mason & Oceana Counties, Michigan, Illustrated.
Death record or obit for Timothy Cronan

Timorthy Cronan worked in a sawmill in Manistee from at least 1870 to 1880. He is in both the 1870 and 1880 census there. He was born around 1835 in Ireland and his wife's name was Bridget. I can find no record of him after the 1880 census and was hoping someone might be able to do a lookup for me. Any info on his wife and/or children (Johanna, Katherine, Dennis, Helen, Agnes and Clara) would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom

I also have a picture that has 11 gentlemen in it that is only labeled "Fox Farm Bear Lake MI". Does anyone know what the Fox Farm is?

The Hogmire family came from Avon NY where there is a fox hunt held every year on the land that they settled. I'm thinking this picture is related to that---like they brought the hunt to Bear Lake with them. There is a dog in the picture that could be the hunting dog.

If anyone is interested in this picture, let me know via email and I'll send you a copy.

Henrichsen, Bosso, Guimond, Junnikkala families - Need help w/dates of photos

I have created an online photo album with old (and newer) family photos. Unfortunately, I have found that people did not write names and/or dates on the backs of photos back in the "old days". Therefore, I don't know who some people are, and have to guess about the year/timeframe a lot of the photos were taken. I don't have a lot of close family left to ask, either.

If anyone here is familiar with any of these family surnames from Manistee/Kaleva area, please let me know, and I will send you a link to the album (it's private and needs an invitation) to see if you can help with names/dates. Even if you're just familiar with dress/haircuts from the 'teens, 20's and 30's, that could help in more accurately dating some of the photos.

Thank you!

Roy William Westboy - Thompsonville & Springdale MI

Hi! I'm still searching without any luck for Roy William Westboy (sometimes found as Ray Westbay). According to my grandmother's birth certificate dated 3/16/1918 and his WWI draft card dated 6/5/1917, he lived in Thompsonville, MI and farmed in or around Springdale, MI.

His wife and child lived in Chicago. Not sure if he traveled back and forth. They are on the 1920 census in Chicago, but he is not in Chicago or MI that I can find.

I don't know when Roy and his wife Minnie were married, or where. Can't find church records for them either. I don't believe Roy was born in the US either. Does anyone have any suggestions they can give.

Thanks!
Aymee
I am wondering if there is anyone in the group that descends from the John McAnley family from Manistee. I am not related, but my great great grandfather is buried in their family plot. He died a few months (ship fever) after arriving in Manistee with all his family, and my supposition, is that with little money there wasn't enough for a plot at Mt. Carmel. John McAnley's wife, Elizabeth, died two days later and allowed my great great grandfather to be buried at the same time in his family plot. I know the McAnley family was a prominent family in town, and they attended the same church. I just wanted to get in touch with the family if there is anyone out there seeing this - to say thank you, and ask if they had ever known of this story (which is also noted in the burial of the church records). Thank you.
