Mackinac Marriages 1725-1837

While researching online for U.P. information, I came across a digital copy of the book, "History of the Upper Peninsula, 1883." In the Mackinac County section, I found several pages that recorded an "old marriage register" for Mackinac and St. Ignace. These are Catholic Church marriages for the French inhabitants of the area, and there are 115 marriages listed from 1725 to 1837.

Here is how to locate this information. Go to this URL:
http://www.pldl.org/michcol.html and scroll down the page to the reference "History of the UP - 1883." Click on that title. The new page will open to the title page of the book. Near upper left side of the screen, look for the small box that shows the "page no." Use the down arrow to go to page 370. The marriages are listed on pages 370 to 372. Use the + sign at the top of each page to enlarge the page. In the box marked "Format" at the top left of the page, change the "image" to PDF. When that page opens, it is possible to print the page.

I hope this information will be useful to some researchers.

Joseph Martin
Romeoville, Illinois
martinjo(at)lewisu.edu

Albertine LEE, Paul LEE, Woodrow LEE,

Trying to find info on my grandfather, Paul LEE. I feel I must at least shed a little light as to why this is so important. My Fathers father- My Grandfather has been a real snot all of his life- He married my Grandmother and went to WWII and managed to send word home that he had been killed in the war- They hold a memorial service and less than a week later my father was born. When my father was in his mid to late 20's he got a call from a man saying that he wanted the estate of Paul Lee, that had been robbed from his mother. Shocked my father hired a lawyer to find anything he could about Paul- come to find out the snot had faked his death twice and been married three times-without a divorcee to anyone. The third time he died we are thinking he may have actually died! But are waiting for a autopsy report or anything that say's he is dead. For years now I have been fiddling with finding information about the life of Paul. I have managed to piece together some but other years are a great loss-A short time ago my father had a heart attack- He is still in the ICU- He asked me to "find the missing pieces of Paul's life" And I have no clue as to how to do so or even where to start looking- My father never got to know his father when he was alive- I am hoping to answer many of his questions before his time is up. All I know is my father HAS to know about the life of his father. My father thinks he has more siblings out there, I'm just not sure- We have found two already!
All I have is this- 5209 E. 4th Ave. Spokane County Washington-He has this Address listed for himself- his mother Albertine Lee- His father John Lee- and brother Woodrow Lee- His name was Paul E. Lee This paper has a date on it - September 26- 1950 he enlisted in the service
from that address? Do you have any other clues as to where I may look for information-or even what I should be looking for? His mother is buried in Escanaba MI- His father is also buried in Michigan but we do not know where.

William CANTIN Obit

MACKINAC PIONEER FOUND DEAD IN WOODS
___

WM. CANTIN MEETS DEATH ON ABANDONED ROAD
___

BODY EXPOSED TWO DAYS
___

Before Being Discovered by Hunters. Deceased was a Farmer of Rapinville
___

(Special Correspondence)

The people of Engadine and the surrounding country received the greatest shock of their existence Sunday when the dead body of William Cantin, one of the best known farmers in the county, was found lying on the old Arnold road about one mile south of Engadine. About twenty rods from the body his team of horses was found, one of them dead and the other's condition such that it, too, would have perished in a short time, had it not been discovered.
Mr. Cantin left his farm Friday morning with a load of hay for Naubinway. After disposing of his load, it is believed that on his return to his home his team must have run away and got on the old Arnold road, for this road is only used during the winter months for a logging road and is impassable for rigs at this time of the year.
It is the common opinion that he was thrown from his rig and that Mr. Cantin started on foot after his runaway horses and that when he got to them he was too exhausted to release them. It is also believed that he lay down to recuperate his strength and that the excitement of the chase and his rough experience in his condition was the cause of his death. The exact truth of his experience in the lonely swamp, all alone, will never be known as the mystery dies with him.
If it had not been for the fact that a couple of men from town took the old road while hunting, it is probable that the body would have lain there until spring. The men, after satisfying themselves that there was nothing that could be done for the dead man, succeeded in extricating the live horse from its position in the water and worked over it so that they were able to bring it to town the following day and it is believed that it will soon be in good shape again. The body of Mr. Cantin was taken to the family home Sunday afternoon.
William Cantin was one of the successful farmers of this section and was highly respected by his neighbors. He was a man of kindly disposition and his many friends deplore his untimely death and the family has the deepest sympathy of the entire community.
The deceased was born in Rowdin, Ont., Dec. 12th, 1856, and came to Michigan at the age fo 25. In 1888 he was united in marriage to Rosa Boucha in Rapinville where he made his home.
He is survived by his widow and five children. Mrs. Ed. Minor fo Newberry; William, Eddie, Archie and Norma, all of Rapinville; also two brothers, Jerry Cantin of Rapinville, Joe Cantin of Naubinway, and Mrs. Therrian of Montreal, Can. All but the sister were present at the funeral. The deceased was a kind and loving husband and father, a congenial and obliging neighbor. And will be greatly missed by his many friends.
The funeral was from the Catholic church in Rapinville, Rev. Father LaFebre officiating, and the remains laid to rest in the Engadine cemetery.
Mrs. Wm. Campbell of the Soo, and Mrs. Julia Pond of Trout Lake, Mrs. Cantin's sisters, were present at the funeral.

---ST IGNACE ENTERPRISE DEC 14TH 1916

Aitkins, Aikens...
Her father was William Aikins. He eventually settled in Brigden, Ontario.
I do not have a mother's name.
My aunt recently told us she was native - and they weren't allowed to talk about it growing up.
If anyone has any information at all it would be much appreciated as I am at a BIG roadblock with this line in my family history.
Thanks.
Tammy Cadue Willems
Hendrick's Quarry Route

From approximately 1933 through 1953, my grandfather was involved in hauling blueberries from near Whitefish Point to Appleton, Wisconsin. Part of the journey passed through Mackinac county, perhaps Luce and certainly Chippewa County, but I have been unable to document the precise route owing to later road changes.

The route, as described to me was as follows: "shortly after Caffey Corners were the highway turned first north for
about a mile and then east for a half mile, they turned off U.S. Highway 2 north on what was then Michigan Highway 48 - a small road that led straight to Hendricks Quarry. It then jogged alternately east and north until it reached Michigan highway 28. They would then travel east on M28 until they came to the intersection with Michigan Highway 123."

Can anyone familiar with this area either describe the route in detail or have maps or know of maps from this period sufficiently detailed to show the route?
Just a few names, I have more:

AMABLE ST. ONGE, JOSEPH LATOUR, ADLAIDE DUMAS,

MARTHA J. DESJARDINE, LETARD

Surnames: St Onge, Latour, Letour, Desjardine, Dumas, Letard, Plankey

Looking for help to figure out this family. I am told that the Latours real name is St.Onge, they changed it when they came to the states as Indians were not allowed to

purchase land, they are also known as Letard, Letour and Dumas. This family is from the upper peninsula of Michigan...in Mackinac and Chippewa counties. Some dates I

have are Angelique Dumas b. 1854, Joseph Dumas b 1857, Louis St. Onge b 2-1860, Anthony Francis b 1868, Joseph Dumas m. Julia St. Germain in 1894, Joseph A. Dumas(ST. Onge)Latour m. Martha Jane Desjardine in 1904, Abraham Latour b. 1905. Have more names and dates. Willing to share info.

BettyK

We are trying to find out more about
my husband's paternal family lines.
He did not know his father and would
like to know more about his paternal
lines to satisfy his curiosity about
his family heritage as well as for
medical reasons.

Here is what we know:
My husband was conceived most likely in Aug of 1957.
It is likely that his parents met in St. Ignace.
His mother who has since passed told him that his
father was a Potawatomi Indian who worked on the
Mackinac Bridge. We have no name or anything to
go on. His father would have likely not known that
he was conceived. I know this isn't much to go on
but was hoping that with the 50th anniversary of
the bridge might bring about an answer. Beyond this
I guess our only hope would be to take a DNA test which
at present isn't within our budget.

Thanks,
--Marie G.

I'm looking for any information regarding the following family.
According to the 1870-MI-Mackinac-Saint Ignace Census I found:
Charles Rousseau, 40, born in Canada
Charlotte (wife) 36, born in Michigan
Joseph M. (son) 3, born in Michigan
Charlotte J. (daug) 2, born in Michigan

1880-MI-Mackinac-Hendricks Census I found:
Charles Reso , 50, born in Canada
Charlotte (wife), 47, born in Michigan
Antoine (son), 26, born in Michigan
Joseph (son), 13, born in Michigan
Charles (son), 9, born in Michigan
John (son), 5, born in Michigan

I believe John is my great grandfather, John Jonas Rousseau. The family knew that he had a brother Charles and his father was Charles but nothing else has been known about this family. Family story is that Charles (young one) moved to Duluth, Minnesota and worked for the Salvation Army but I haven't been able to verify that yet.

This family has been quite a brick wall for the family researchers (2 of us). I think that this census informaton may have put the chip in it that we've needed.
If anyone has any information on this family please contact me.
Thank you so much
Delayne
Angeline Bonneau, Nancy Toumi, and Elizabeth Nikanen (sisters) from Nahma,MI. Delta Co. all passed away here in Alger Co. Munising, MI. I knew all three sisters, their children, and grandchildren that lived in this area.
I believe this family is both Grand Traverse Ottawa and Chippewa. I believe their mother was Chippewa and their father was Ottawa. I do not have any files on this family anymore so going pretty much by memory. I may have seen their mother's maiden name somewhere, possibly in an obituary. Seems to me it was Bourassa/Boursaw something like that.
If you write to the Alger County Courthouse they may be able to help you by checking the death records of these sisters to see what their mother's maiden name was. That is why I am listing these three by their married names. It will be easier for the courthouse to look them up. The people at the courthouse know this family as well so it should not be too hard. Their births would be in Delta Co. Michigan. Hope this helps you with your research.
Seeking information on the following family. The spelling of the name has been listed in various family & civil records as Neveu, Nephew, Neven, Neville, but recently I have come to believe the name is Neveu:

Mary Neveu, born about 1848/1849 in Sault Ste. Marie, married George Savoy October 10, 1869 in Marquette, MI.

In the marriage record, Mary's parents are given as Michel Neveu & Marguerite Cantin.

In a search on FamilySearch.org, I located a marriage record of Michael Neven, born 1828 to Marguerite Fontaine on February 12, 1849 - Could this be the same couple as Mary's parents?

Also on FamilySearch.org, an LDS member has entered parents of Michel Neven as Alexis Neven & Marie Bassinet & parents of Marguerite Fontaine as Joseph Fontaine & Josette Jolineau.

Have no idea if any of this information is accurate, considering the spelling variations.

Would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who might have any information.

Greatfully,

Mike Butland

Per the 1860 Census for Michilimakinac Co., St. Ignace Twp.,... Mary Lavake b. abt.1821-4 Canada married Louis LaJoice in Mackinac county on March 18, 1837. Louis was born in Canada abt. 1808. She is part of the LEVEQUE Family above from Canada. According to this census they had 5 children in Canada and 5 children after coming to Mackinac County. I have Mary Lavake/Leveque's death cert(died June 1905 in St. Ignace) which states her parents are Paul Lavake/Leveque and Mary Bishop but nothing else.

For the surname PLANKEY, I am looking for the parents of Rufus Plankey b. Sept 16, 1875 Canada, Immigrated 1890, married in St. Ignace to Agnes Lajoice. Rufus' father name is Frank or Francis. They reportedly stayed with the Beckers upon coming to MI.

I am also interested in further info on Angeline Robinson b. 1841 in Mackinac Co.(1870 #59-14) and her father Francis Robinson b. 1797 in Canada. Francis married Josette Jacob Chebayabos in Mackinac county on Sept 11, 1826.

I am searching for the Indian family of LOUIS/LEWIS from Mackinac County. Charles Louis b. 1863 (DR #3453) married Marie Louisa Smith Way-we-gon-nay-be (DR # 3454).

Jean Baptiste METAY married Marie RIOPEL in 1828. In the 1860 census Holmes, Michilimackinac, Michigan, page 78, Marie is living with her son Peter Metty and his family. Under the heading "Color", the enumerator has a tick mark for each of the family members. See attached file. Following the marks upward, the last entry the enumerator wrote is "Ind." Am I to presume this family has Native-American roots?
The genealogy of the Riopel family shows only one marriage between an ancestor and a "Sauteuse Indian" at least four generations removed from Marie and she is not a direct descandant of this union.
If you have any insight as to what were the enumerator's intentions or other knowledge of Marie's family, any help would be appreciated.
Hello, I'm in need of baptism, birth, death, or marriage papers with Josetta Champagne's parents name on them. Her parents were Simon Champagne and Marguerite (possibly McMillan) Otchapewa married in St Ignace 14 DEC 1822. Josetta married Eli Bouchard 2 DEC 1928 in St Ignace. It looks like her parents already had children when they married, posibly why they were not married in the church. Some of Josetta"s older siblings were baptised at Mackinaw Island. Can someone check this out for me that has the CD. Josetta was born around 1816 on Mackinaw Island. Thanks in advance. Lyle Reid

Jacob was born 1863 Germany per the 1910,20 and 30 censuses Matilda 1868 Sweden . These are the grandparents of the elderly man. Ellen was Jacob and Matildas only surviving daughter b 1903 Mackinac county MI. I assume Jacob and Matilda were married there and that the two other children died there between 1900 and 1910. I am hoping a kind soul could help me find an obituary and marriage record and death record for the couple in question.

Thank you very much for any help you can offer

Louis and Paul Belanger relationship solved! Maybe....

Just thought I'd post the results of some research I've been doing on the Belanger family. Paul and Louis are NOT related! As most of you know they married sisters, Louis married Genevive Montreuil and Paul married Angelique Montreuil.

Using the St. Anne's CD, looking at the sacraments there is a Benjamin Belanger who seemed to be close to Paul (they show up in each other's kids' baptisms). Benjamin's third marriage to Catherine Plant lists his parents and home parish. The parents listed were Joseph Belanger and Josette Fortier. The home parish is St. Guillaume d'Upton, very close to St. Michel d'Yamaska, home of Louis Belanger's parents Chrysostome Belanger and Therese Petrin. Both Louis and Paul named a son Joseph, so a cousin? Benjamin's records were found at Maskinonge, but his parents were married at Yamachiche. Benjamin's parents were Joseph Lefebvre dit BOULANGER and Josette Fortier. Boulanger not Belanger. At Yamachiche is a baptism for Paul dated 12 Dec 1809. 1809 is consistent with census records.

I got an email from Susan Neumann who has been researching Benjamin Belanger and she supplied me with the following passage from the Richard G. Hulbert Diary, p. 128, Sept 1890 "4 Sept Benjamin Balongi (brother of Paul Balongi (Sen), who is now living at Scott's Point) called on me today. His home is at Anastique, Wisconsin, near Green Bay. He will return probably to Anastique.

Scott's Point is now called Point Patterson. I have in my records land transaction from Newton Township which is where the Point is located. Paul Belanger and his wife lived there until the mid 1890s - the last official documents I have for them. No death date for either Paul or Angelique has yet been found.

A couple of months ago I published an article in the Habitant Heritage about Marie Belanger (daughter of Paul) and Oliver Therrien. In the court records the Belanger named is spelled Boulanger. Go figure?! Is this circumstantial evidence or proof?

I am looking for information on any of the mentioned surnames. Emmanuel and Hannah (Putman) Nuttall moved their family to Oceana County in the early 1890's. I believe that Joel and Lydia (Dunkelburger) Deitz/Dietz were already living in the area at the time. Frank Louis Nuttall (son of Emmanuel (Massey) and Hannah Nuttall, and Lena Dietz/Deitz, daughter of Joel and Lydia Dietz/Deitz were married about 1896 in Oceana County. Emmanuel died in 1901 and Hannah in 1907. Joel died about 1903 and Lydia remarried to a Rev. Morse. Lydia died in 1935. Any information on any of these families would be greatly appreciated

She was rejected but so was my grandmother Elizabeth Belanger but received annutity payments at Mackinac after her husband Sameul Leblanc died, for her and her children so I don't really know what the rejection meant. I am related to the Belangers, Leducs, Lapeer/Lapierres, McGulpins, Aslins, Chevaliers just to mention a few. Did I tell you I was a Lalonde from St. Ignace. What was your maiden name? I graduated in 1954 from Lasalle High.
Carol

Derek Hayes' book, First Crossing, contains interesting information re Peter Pond. Alexander Mackenzie's sister was my gggrandmother, thus my interest in this family. Pond was an associate of Mackenzie in the fur trade and also on his exploration journeys that took him to the Arctic and the Pacific Coast. Pond apparently was a native of Connecticut. I believe he was born in the mid l700's.
The St. Ignace Ponds were French. Good luck in your searching. Ruthie

I have been searching for this man for a very long time and finally found his death record and obit yesterday while traveling through St. Ignace.

His death certificate says he was employed as an auto mechanic for the highway department when he died on Nov 9, 1960. In the book "Before the Bridge" published in 1957 lists him as a turnkey at the courthouse and says his wife Alice (Hundley) was a cook at the hospital.

Is there anyone who has any information on Maurice Parmelee/Parmalee/Parmalie such as a photo of him, any paperwork with his handwriting on it, anyone who remembers him, or just any tiny little tidbit would be an interest. (I have something with his handwriting on it and would like to compare to see if it is the same person and also have a photo of a young man that I would like to compare to see if it is the same person.)

He is buried at the St. Ignatius cemetery.

I think in 1953 he lived in Cedarville according to an old Traverse City Record Eagle newspaper article.

His death certificate lists his address at the time of his death as 207 Murray St., St. Ignace.

I have been doing this research for a number of years for an 89 year old woman whose father disappeared in 1926 and she has been trying desperately to find out what happened to him for a very long time. We think he might have been Maurice Parmelee.

WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE HELP US??

Would like to hear of any tiny scrap of information.

Pauline

For those of you who are interested in the Goudreau's of Epouffette... I posted a picture of two WWI soldiers in the Mackinac County Photo Album under Veterans of Other Wars sometime ago. I do know that the soldier standing is my GG Uncle William A. Beloungea who died in France during the war. At the time I did not have a clue as to who the other soldier was although he was known to the family because of the message content on the back of the picture( it was a postcard picture taken at Scotts Point and was sent to Williams' sister, Sadie Belongea Sly). I came across Williams' Draft Registration card and on it he claims to work at fishing for John Goudrea at Seul Choix Pte. I then came across John's Draft card which said he was self employed at fishing. Both registered the same day in Mueller. I suspect the other soldier is John Goodreau(seated). Let me know if anyone can support this theory.

I'm very curious. What is your documentation linking Claude Caron and Choukega (aka Wooden Ladle)DeCarrie/DeKaury/Decorah, etc. as the same person? I've found that same theory in Wisconsin's Early French Habitants by Jo Bartels Alderson and Kate Alderson Rennert. I also just found someone else who identified Caron's wife (Wau-Pe-Se-Siu) as a daughter of Chougeka. I have never found any primary source documentation for this theory. I wonder where it originates. Any suggestions? Honestly, I think it is wrong, but maybe there is some link between the Caron and DeCarrie families I have missed. I'd appreciate your response. Thanks much!
Linda
