There are several other descendents of Joseph Sheldon in the UP. I have met several of them. I am most interested in finding out where Joseph, Joseph Sheldon's father, came to Canada from. I know he was born in England but where? I have much info on this family but my computer crashed and all my paper is in MI. I'm in FL for the winter.I am descended from Joseph's brother, Wesley. Anyway, nice to hear from a new cousin. Marcia

It's nice to meet another cousin. I am looking for the same information you are looking for. If I find anything I'll let you know. Do you know if Josephs wife is Amy or Emma Johnson. Do you have any information on her parents? All I have is that his name is Josiah Johnson and her name is Ophelia

I think Emma is correct. She was from NY and they may have married there as I havent been able to fins a Canadian record. There is a family belief that yout MacDonald was a niece of Sir John A MacDonald. May not be true but its a conversation starter at your local genealogy meeting.Marcia

I've been told that Sir John A McDonald was an uncle for as long as I can remember. I found a family flow sheet which has the McDonald information on it after my mom died. It is handwritten and a copy and I can't read it well but it does have written on it that Sir John A McDonald is an Uncle to Hugh McDonald, Elizabeth's father. I've tried to substantiate this but I haven't had any luck. I don't have any information on Hugh's parents and I'm searching from California. If any one has info on Hugh's parents I would appreciate it.

Hello,

I too was told that Sir John was a 4th great uncle to my mother, Pauline CLARK KIRBY from Saginaw, MI.

My Great Grandmother was named Adella MCDONALD (MACDONALD?). From what info I have, she was born in Leamington, Essex, Ontario around 1848 and her father was Scottish. She married a Watson J CLARK from Pennsylvania. They eventually moved to Ithica, Michigan where they had 5 children, one of which was my Grandmother, Edith. Adella died in Saginaw, MI abt 1932. Watson and Adella held a prominent place in their society at the time and their oldest son was a well respected physician/surgeon.

After searching and searching for Adella, I finally found the following information:

Listed as a DAUGHTER of Thomas WILLAN and Elizabeth HOWSON is an Elizabeth WILLAN. It indicates that Elizabeth was married to a Hugh MCDONALD. The list of children for Elizabeth WILLAN and Hugh MCDONALD includes ADELLA (along with siblings Ann, Elizabeth, Harriette, John Duncan,Margaret and Mary.)

Does any of this seem to fit with your tree? How might your Elizabeth and my Adella have been related? Sir John was a MACDONALD but I have found cases where both MC/MAC are in the same family with some siblings being MC and others being MAC. I have no idea what that is all about but it sure makes tieing up the loose ends difficult.

Please let me know if any of this is of interest to you or if you can clear up any of my MCDONALD/MACDONALD Sir John connections.

Thanks very much, J

Your Adella and my Elizabeth are sisters. Elizabeth Willan McDonald was born Sept 30, 1834 possibly in Tilbury Ontario and died Jul 27, 1930 in Flint Michigan. Her father is Hugh McDonald born about 1804 in Glascow Scotland and died 1891. Her mother Elizabeth Willan was both about 1815 in Scotland and died Feb 27, 1853 and is buried at Ruthven United Cemetary, Gosfield South, Ontario, Canada. Elizabeth McDonald married Joseph Johnson Sheldon Feb 23 1853. An interesting thing is that after Hugh's wife Elizabeth died, Hugh married Joseph Sheldon's sister Anna and had another 7 children. Does any of this help? Little differences in name like Mac and Mc don't mean much. Feel free to contact me at terri@lhagerman.com
