I am doing a search for someone that supposedly lived in Leelanau county Michigan. Unfortunately, I do not have a first or last name, but do have some information that might ring a bell to someone. The lady I am looking for (and quite possibly may be deceased now) would be about 86/87 years old. She became a widow at a very early age (she would have been younger than 37 when this happened). She had 4 children, was Catholic, and of polish decent, had brown hair and stood about 5'5" tall. I have learned that she may even had lived in Traverse city, and possibly maybe a nurse but not working. Sometime after her husbands death, of which I do not know just how he died, she became invovledwith a man and became pregnant, thus giving her 5 children. This pregnancy resulted in her giving the child up for adoption. The baby was a girl and was born in Grand Rapids, which is what was "done" back then. The baby was born November 20, 1958. The babies biirthfather was a maried man and worked in some type of building trades back then. She may have even been living in Empire.

Hi. I've been tracing the Harris line and I have a mystery. Hoping someone here can help. I have an Anna M Harris who married Daniel Knox May 3, 1860 Northport, Leelanau, Michigan. Had kids Mary Francis, Emma, and John Marion Knox. According to census records, between 1865-1868 Anna then married John Harris, moved out to Waupaca, Wisconsin and had kids Clarance, Arthur, Eva, and Wallace Harris. The mystery is Anna's maiden name. If it is Harris, could Anna be Anna M Harris, sister of John? Or maybe it's Anna Harris, but just a more distant branch of the Harris line.

Question. Can anyone visit the Leelanau county clerks office and lookup marriage records? It's a longshot, but either the Daniel Knox or the John Harris marriage might have parent names. Any help would be greatly appreciated...Dennis

POW/MIA Korean War, Leelanau Co. TOBIN

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Leelanau County, Michigan as his home of record.

Soldier: WLATER HENRY TOBIN, JR
Born: June 15, 1928
Date of loss: December 2, 1950, MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 128 families in Michigan that have not been located. There is one family from Leelanau County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Does anyone know how I might find out what school it was, or the location? I think she may have a photograph somewhere of her with a group of children in front of the school.

Am attempting to trace the Savage Family of Leelanau county. My wife is the grand daughter of Clarence Savage born about 1899? We have all on the Clarence Savage descendents but need information on his siblings (Vernus - female; Andrew and John).

We would also like any information on their parents- Alec Charles Savage and Nellie Doolittle. We think Alec Charles was born abt 1863 in England and Nellie born abt. 1883 in Saginaw Michigan.

Thanks much

Bill Schrader

I am researching a Rose Flees from Centerville and Solon Township, Leelanau County, Michigan. She married a John Perszyk who later changed his last name to Persik. This Rose Flees was previously married to a Mikowski and had the following children with Mikowski: Anthony, Peter, Catherine, Martha, and Esther. Rose and John Perszyk (Persik) had a son: Clem Perszyk. Does anyone have any vital or other information on Rose? Or any other information on her husband John or the other Mikowski?

Peter Drow 1814-1900

Peter Drow appears in 1860 census as Peter Droy, 45 in 1870 Peter Drew, 58 and in 1889 as Peter Drew, 69. This is the same Peter in each of the censuses, but the problem starts when you look at the wife.

Frances, 33, born abt 1827 in 1860, Margaret, 58, abt 1812 in 1870 and Francis, 51, born about 1828 in the 1880 census are his wives. My guess is that these are three different individuals

In the 1860 census Margaret Droy, 49, born about 1814 is living next to Peter with children Catherine, 18; Louisa, 14; Lisa, 12 and Emily, 9. In 1870 Mary, 15; Lèonida, 13; Phillip, 11; Margaret, 9; Leon, 7; Celina, 4; Rosalie, 1/12 and Edward, 6 are the children in the home. Also living in the home in 1870 is Francez Jeamine, 41 born in France is housekeeper. She appears to be the 1880 wife.

Mu question is: are all the children attributed to Peter his? Was Margaret his wife or a sister in law that was living with him in 1870? Which children were his? Her’s? Their’s? Francez’s?

Name: Peter Droy
Age in 1860: 45 Birth Year: abt 1815
BirthPlace: France
Home in 1860: North Manitou Island, Manitou, Michigan
Gender: Male
Post Office: St James
Household Members: Name Age
Peter Droy 45
Frances Droy 33
Peter Droy 11
Danel Droy 5
Mary Droy 3
Philip Droy 1

1870 United States Federal Census Record about Peter Drew
Name: Peter Drew
Age in 1870: 58 Birth Year: abt 1812
BirthPlace: France
Home in 1870: Centerville, Leelanau, Michigan
Race: White Gender: Male

Peter Drew
Home in 1880: Centreville, Leelanau, Michigan
Age: 69 Birth Year: abt 1811
BirthPlace: FRA
Relation to head-of-household: Self
Spouses's Name: Frances
Father's birthplace: FRA
Mother's birthplace: FRA
Occupation: Farmer
Marital status: Married
Race: White Gender: Male
Household Members: Name Age
Peter Drew 69
Frances Drew 51
Edward Drew 15
Lana Drew 14
Rosalie Drew 10
After graduating Suttons Bay High School in 1986, she graduated from the University of Michigan. Jennifer continued at Western Michigan University where she received her Master's Degree. After WMU she was employed at the Kellogg Company and was most recently Director of Supply Chain Finance. Those in the Kellogg family know that Jennifer was not only an outstanding employee, but an outstanding friend. Jennifer's loved ones are truly thankful to the Kellogg family for their wonderful support. Jennifer was a vibrant woman of beauty, character and courage. She excelled at everything she set her mind to. Throughout her life she was a talented pianist and seamstress. She was a dedicated Wolverine fan and alumni. Recently Jennifer and her daughters, Meghann and Allison, flew to California and saw their Wolverines play in the 2007 Rose Bowl. Jennifer's journey with Breast Cancer showed her strength of character. She met this challenge with an upbeat and positive outlook. Jennifer documented her trials and triumphs with cancer and used her experience to help others. Through the group, Road to Recovery; Jennifer was very active in mentoring others with breast cancer treatment. Jennifer provided an ear to listen, a shoulder to lean on and a kind heart to those that shared her condition. She gave so much of herself and her journey to help others. Her accomplishments were many and great, however, Jennifer's joy was her family. Her greatest love and pride were her three lovely daughters. Meghann, Allison and Katelin: Mom will always love and keep you in her heart.

Peter Nelson, keeper of Grand Traverse Light, Leelanaw County, was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, February 12, 1881. He was bred a sailor, serving a seven years' apprenticeship as such, and has spent a larg part of his life on the ocean and lakes. Has been nearly all over the world. Was in San Francisco when it was but a trading post. He came to this country in 1835, landing in New York City. Came west by canal and lake to Buffalo in 1842. Sailed on the lakes until 1853, all but the first year as master. Came to the Traverse Region in 1851, bringing Mr. Hannah to what is now Traverse City. In 1853 he bought a water mill on East Bay, four miles from Traverse City. Worked several years for Mr. Hannah, measuring lumber, logs, etc. In 1855 he bought of the government 160 acres of land in Section 10, Town 31, Range 11. Has sold forty acres, retaining the rest. October 24 he was appointed keeper of the Grand Traverse Light, of which he has since remained in charge. He was married in June, 1866, to Mrs. Alice Bigelow, a native of England, who had two children. Three children have been born to them.

From "The Traverse Region, Historical and Descriptive with Illustrations of Scenery and Portraits and Biographical Sketches of some of its Prominent Men and Pioneers" Chicago: H.
I'm looking for any details on the following people

John Norris b. 1778 Orleans Co., NY, married Mary ???
son: Seth Norris, married Nancy ???, settled in Traverse City, MI
son of Seth: Albert Norris, married Fanny Mariah Fish
son of Albert: Julius Norris, married Flossie Gladys Hall
Julius' children:
Charles William Tennant (adopted by Aunt), b.1923,d.1990
Wanietta (living, last I knew)

As you can see I don't have many dates. I don't seem to see anyone in the SSDI database that matched Julius (I'd expect him to be in it).

Some claimes to fame I guess:
Seth and Albert were supposedly among the first settlers of the Traverse City area (non-native of course).
Albert fought and was wounded in the battle of Gettysberg.

Now I don't have the actual documents to confirm this, but its the family lore if you will.
Hi my name is Judith Herman, I am looking for information about my Grandmother Mary Gauthier. She was born in about 1902. As I understand it, the family came from Quebec Canada to Lake Lelanau in the early part of last century. I'm not exactly sure where she was born. She somehow met and married Wayne Armstrong, they had 7 children. The rest of her family moved to Muskegon Michigan. I know nothing of great grandparents, or much about that side of my family. Any help would be appreciated,Thankyou in advance

I'm sorry that this is off topic from ancestry questions, but I hope someone can help me with a book project I am working on.

I am reseaching the April 3, 1956 tornado that hit Southeast Leelanau County, from Solon to south of Suttons Bay. I am looking for information on specific locations that were hit by the tornado and any photos of the tornado damage in Leelanau, Grand Traverse, or Benzie Counies. Thanks!

Is there anyone in Maple City with a digital camera who would be willing to take pictures of these two tombstones in the Kasson Cemetery for me and e-mail them? I had searched for these two people since 1967 and just today found them in the Leelanau County cemetery database. Ten years ago I could have visited the cemetery myself but now I live in Arizona.
Thank you.
Sharon Ivory

I am searching on information about my great-grandfather’s family. His name was Samuel Leroy Bartlett. His father was Leroy Bartlett, and he was born in Vermont in 1850. The family moved to Altona, New York and then to Leelanau, but I am not sure where they were between 1860 and 1880. Samuel ended up in Chicago, where he had a son named Leroy Samuel, but he may have lived in Leelanau for a while. I believe that Samuel was not Mary Bartlett’s son, as Leroy had a different wife in 1850 just before Samuel was born. Any and all information would be appreciated!

John Bryant, farmer, Leland, was born in May, 1805, in Seneca County, N. Y.; moved to Troy, Oakland County, Mich., in 1826 and took up land from the government and cleared up a farm; remained there several years, and returned to Seneca County, N.Y., where he lived till 1840; he then went back to Oakland County, Mich., and was a farmer there till 1854, when he came to Leland and settled on a farm near the present site of the village. He afterward moved to a farm on Section 9, and now lives on the same section. He had deeds from the Government for more than 900 acres of land. He is one of the pioneers of Leelanaw County, and is hale and hearty at the age of seventy-nine years. When he moved to Leland he came by steamboat from Detroit, and besides his household furniture, brought his horses and several head of cattle. When the boat arrived off leland, the captain, being afraid of shoal water, anchored a half mile from shore, the horses and cattle were pushed overboard and swam ashore, and the household effects were landed in small boats. Married in 1826 to Anna Hodge. They have three sons and four daughters.

From "The Traverse Region, Historical and Descriptive with Illustrations of Scenery and Portraits and Biographical Sketches of some of its Prominent Men and Pioneers" Chicago: H. R. Page & Co. 1884.
I am looking for the burial place of Julia Ann Palmer Weiderman/Widerman. Julia was married to Christopher Weiderman/Widerman. They were living on South Fox Island when Christopher died in 1888 of consumption. By 1900 Julia and her last 3 children have moved to Leelanau Township. We cannot locate Julia after the 1900 Federal census. A cousin received a message stating that Julia was buried in the Island Protestant Cemetery and did not have a headstone. We are wondering if anyone has any knowledge as to where this cemetery is located and if there are any records available.

Thank you
Pat Weiderman Crimmel

I am looking for information on Sarah Naskaw (b. ~1861), the daughter of Edward Naskaw (b. ~1819, d. after 1908) and Ann Chelo (b. unknown, d. unknown) and wife of George Prickett (b. ~1859, also known as George Pabo). So far, this is what I have:

Sarah may also have a birthdate in Mar 1865. She appeared in the 1900 census in Leelanau County, Michigan and on the Durrant Roll of 1908. She and George were married about 1885 in Leelanau and had at least three children, Sophia (b. Jun 1884, m. Joe Stevens 10 Apr 1902), Mary (b. Aug 1891) and Samuel (b. 3 Aug 1899, d. Jun 1980, m. Josephine Madagame/Madagme ). It appears that they adopted Ida (b. Apr 1898), the daughter of George’s brother Peter J. Prickett after his death.

All were members of the Ottawa/Odawa tribe according to the Durrant Rolls of 1908.

Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

Is James R. Prickett a son of Richard "Captured by Indians" Prickett?

I came across this in my research (with the same question posted) and started following up on it.

Richard had a son born about 1803 to his Ojibwe/Chippewa wife in the Green Bay, WI area. Nothing else is known from that side.

James R. was born about 1804 in Michigan (remember, in 1803-1804, Wisconsin was part of Michigan). In 1832 he appears in the area that would become Allegan County, living near the mouth of the Gun River. He is identified as a half-breed, with a note that he had a "Yankee" father instead of a French one as was normal for the time in this area. This would fit with him being Richard's son, especially since I have not been able to find any other Prickett's in the area during this time.

He is identified in other documents as being an interpreter in 1834 and in 1853. By the 1860 census he is a farmer in Leelanau County, and is listed as "Indian".

His descendants are all shown as members of the Grand Traverse Band, which is both Ojibwe and Odawa/Ottawa. Although the general consensus was that Richard married an Ojibwe woman, the descendants are listed as being Odawa (both in census records and on the Durrant Roll). This could be from several reasons - first, that James joined in with an Odawa band, as he appears to have married an Odawa wife (indeed, many, if not most, of his descendants are shown as "full-blood"). Second, both tribes spoke the same language and are very similar, as is shown by the Grand Traverse Band being composed of both Ojibwe and Odawa. Both tribes were also in the Green Bay area on a regular basis and it would not have been unusual for someone like Richard to have travelled to Michigan.

If anyone has additional information or comments, I would love to hear them.

I am looking for additional information on the Shea brothers:

•	Patrick Augustus or Gus (b. 1851) who married and divorced Mary Stormer
•	Daniel (b. 1855) who married Maggie Stormer they lived for a time in Benzie Co and Maggie and children lived in Empire Twp
•	Rufus (b. 1860) who married Hattie King and lived in Glen Arbor and Empire Townships
•	Cornelius (b. 1863) who married Ellen Cunningham of Manistee and settled for a time in Empire Township before relocating to Kent Co.

I believe they were the children of Patrick and Theresa Shea of Saint Lawrence Co, New York. I’m trying to find more evidence of that connection. I have very detailed info on Cornelius (my great-great grandfather) and a respectable amount on Rufus.

PS.
Frances Brindle Hurlburt or Hurlbut

I am interested in finding the death of Frances Brindle Hurlburt, wife of Lozine (L. A.) Hurlburt. The surname is also seen as Hurlbut. Frances was a member of the Ward family of Marine City and Detroit and other places across Michigan, who were millionaires through their shipping and lumbering interests. Frances compiled a book called Grandmother's Stories, about her aunt Emily Ward, that was published in 1889. Although Frances and her husband moved to Crescent City, Putnam Co., FL, her bio states that she died in "Crescent City, North Manitou Island in 1892." The place is garbled, and the date incorrect as well. She was alive in the 1900 census, enumerated in Florida. I am trying to determine whether Frances died at a summer cottage etc. on North Manitou.

Funeral services will be Friday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m., also at the chapel, with Reverend Al Decator officiating. A luncheon will follow at the Benzie Tribal Center. Interment will be in the Omena Township Cemetery at 3 p.m. for all those wishing to attend.
...
Sign Ty's on-line guest book at www.legacy.com.
The Benzonia Chapel of McElduff-Jowett Funeral Homes and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.
Published in the Record-Eagle on 11/2/2005.

I started working on this a few years ago and my computer died. I'm back up and unfortunately have lost touch with someone I was in contact with in Michigan. Are you still out there?

I am looking for any information on the Bartletts of the Northport/Leelanau county area. My great-grandmother was Mary Bartlett/Rexford (1861-1934). She was married to Frank Rexford, who died in an accident, and then married Josephus Kiersey. She was the daughter of Alphonse Bartlett(born 1862) and sister of Antoine (who married Mary Elizabeth VonHolt). Would love to hear from anyone from this family. I have some information and would like to ensure it's validity. Would also share any that I may have of use.
